Hi everyone.

I have been taking sertraline 100mg/day for about 5 weeks. it was making me feel good and lifting my depression.

It caused me to have insomnia and i couldnt sleep at all so i bought some over the counter sleep aid benadryl/ntyol (diphenhydramine)

i took 200mg by accident and fell asleep.

i woke up the next morning feeling like my brain was mush. no emotion/zombie like feeling.

that was 4 days ago. and i still feel like that. i told my doctor but he didnt give me any advice.. i feel as if my brain has been shut off and im just sitting here with no emotion its horrible

what has gone wrong with me? I did research if these could be taken together and it says it can but what happened? possible seratonin syndrome?

Should i stop taking the sertraline? has it messed up my seratonin receptors?

:( im so scared:?

DPH and setraline isnt a harmful combo, but you did take a little too much DPH. however, the negative-side effects from taking DPH should have dissapated after 12+ hrs, so i don't think the reason why you are feeling "off" is from DPH

Diphenhydramine is not just an antihistamine. The drug has the most affinity for histamine receptors, meaning in low doses it will mostly act as an antihistamine (which is what is responsible for the sedation), but it also an anticholinergic and has significant norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake blockade. Side effects and weird hangover-like effects are actually common with higher doses. It could definitely have been worsened by the fact that you are taking sertraline as well. 25-50mg would have been a better dph dose, as you wouldn't have had as much of the anticholinergic and SNRI effects - less is more when it comes to using diphenhydramine for sleep. But don't take any more diphenhydramine and see if it improves, if not, talk to your doctor or a different doctor. Are you feeling any better?
