[URGENT] Prescribed CARBAMAZEPINE(EPITOL), can I continue smoking MJ?

Hello all.

I have been prelimiminarily diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. I am awaiting an MRI tomorrow.

I have been prescribed CARBAMAZEPINE(EPITOL). I googled "epitol marijuana" and "marijuana carbamazepine" and found some page that said marijuana increases the adverse effects of EPITOL and said I should not use marijuana.

Can I continue to use marijuana safely?

My state does not have MMJ laws so I don't feel comfortable talking about this with my doctor.

Whether or not your state supports MMJ won't affect what your doctor will tell you as far as drug interactions are concerned. Just tell your doctor you like to smoke up once every few months, it's not like he is going to throw you out of his office.

Well, I am considering calling his nurse tomorrow before I start this medication. I always research everything I've given and I'm honestly nervous.

I smoke A LOT of marijuana. A LOT. Like.... close to a quarter ounce a day. Not reggie brown mexibrick either. Not trying to whip out my tiny penis or anything but I'm just saying I ABUSE marijuana.

If there's a real interaction between marijuana and CARBAMAZEPINE/EPITOL I need to know.

Talking to your doctor is your best bet and if you know you abuse it why don't you just chill out on the weed then lol

Because smoking pot makes everything better :)

I abuse it because it doesn't hurt my family or pocketbook or job performance.

Wow a 1/4 oz a day???? how do you afford that?

Its time to cut back regardless of anything else. A 1/4 a week is about the limit of a reasonable amount of weed to smoke...

i would address the addiction problem.

if not though, as far as talking to your doctor about it, it should be fine. when i went on depression medication (wellbutrin [bupropion hci]) i flat out asked my shrink what would be okay. He told me to make sure i didn't drink any alcohol before i asked about other things, but this is basically what i said:

"theoretically what would happen if i did other drugs on wellbutrin? like pot or hallucinogens?"
he basically said "no alcohol but pot and hallucinogens shouldn't prevent a problem"

my shrink is awesome (he's british).

but i would ask your doctor. i don't think this will be a problem if you ask him/her "theoretically" and make sure they don't keep any record of you asking. i make sure he doesn't write down that i ask these types of questions just in case he has to give his reports for some legality issue.

ask your doctor if it's a problem. i'm sure he'll help you.

I don't see why carbamazepine and cannabis would be that much of a problem; though eptol does have weird metabolic functions. I would have a look at the enzymes which metabolse THC and carbamazepine and see what you think. Carbamazepine is a strong inducer of various enzymes; you may run into trouble elminating the drug.

Quit critizing me for smoking marijuana. When you smoke 1G blunts it's easy to kill 7 in a day between your coworkers, wife and by yourself. Jeez.

Bob Saggot told us that you can't be addicted to marijuana and I take it to heart. I just LOVE getting blazed.

I called a pharmacy in Colorado (MMJ) (California not yet open) and spoke to a pharmacist at Walgreens. She crossref'd epitol and marinol and came up with no interactions.

Unless carbamazepine effects the same enzyme that metabolizes YHC then you have nothing to worry about. Since carbamazepine is a enzyme inducer if it affects that enzyme your intake of mj is going to go way up in order to get the same effects.

I really don't think there will be any adverse effects if i remember correctly i smoked weed for the very brief time that i took carbamazepine for trigeminal neuralgia.

Cannabis may help your TN it definetely helps mine thats for sure.

Yeah exactly. Who gives a fuck about pot addiction seriously? I don't. It doesn't affect me and my wife. We don't have children yet but I'll slow down around that time and change some of my behaviors (riding in a car with pot, etC)

This guy didn't ask for advice on his smoking habits, he asked if it was okay to smoke and take this medication, stop riding him. If he wanted help with addiction, he probably would not have posted in CD, but in TDS or something instead.

I feel like this question and the science behind it could be better explained to you in ADD or BDD. You might want to try there if you do not find anything. I cannot, however, think of many drugs which interact negatively with weed.

I've gotten some positive feedback on other boards.

One husband described his wife's plight through the typical medications (including mine) and said MMJ was the only thing that helped.

So far, Demerol and MMJ are helping me. Not sure how much I can attribute to the non-pain killing qualities of an anti-convulsant

For fuck sakes it's only weed! Stop getting pissy at the OP for god sakes. So what if he smokes abunch of weed a day id hardly think that was cause for rehab or whatever 8) .

As someone else who suffers from trigeminal neuralgia cannabis does help for sure. I could never afford to use it as a prevetive medicine but as a breakthrough med ya it works. Although if i was in a place where weed was cheap and pleantiful i might try and go off the opiates or atleast the gabapentin and just smoke weed. Id reduce my opiate intake anyway with any lucck.

Be very careful with demerol by the way as it's a rather nasty, toxic and dangerous opioid. I can't even tolerant the stuff anymore really and it's the only opiate/opioid that makes me visabily fucked up. Even at a medical dose it does for fuck sakes. 100mg's IM from a doctor with a 100mg's of IM dimenhydrinate will have me feeling very fucked up and not always in a good way. 150mg's orally is as about as much as i can take in one go without feeling weird now. I hate the nasty anti-cholinergic effects of demerol and the fact that it interacts with so many different drugs.

So don't take more then 400mg's a day and don't take it longer then 3 days in a row without a few day break. The nasty metabolite called normeperidine starts to build up in high enough doses to cause problems after you get over the 400mg mark and after 3 days it also builds up. Since it can cause seizures and hallucinations it's not something you want building up in your blood stream :\ . It's also not a very strong opioid at all really. Personally id rather codeine over demerol even.

How long have you been on the carbamazepine by the way? You have to get blood tests and all that to make sure your blood levels of carbamazeoine don't go too high or too low. It works very well for some people with TN but i could not tolerant the stuff and got violently i'll. Too bad cause it's also used for bipolar disorder which i have as well so i may have been able to kill 2 birds with one stone. Granted i don't think it's a great anti-manic agent either from all ive read and due to the enzyme induction it causes it's a royal bitch to switch over to other meds once your on it.

If you get stomach upset from the drug MJ should also help that too :) .
