yo, oh, us
So, as the title says I have an appointment with my psychiatrist coming up real soon and I was wondering which of the following two ideas is probably more plausible.

(First, some background. I'm 21 and have been on Bupropion (aka Wellbutrin) XL 300 mg prescribed for ~10 months now for depression and, allegedly, anxiety. It works OK for the dep but not so much on the anx)

1. I want to convince my shrink to prescribe me some type of benzodiazepine for the anxiety which, recently especially, has taken on a little more panic than just General Anxiety Disorder. I suppose the likely options here would be Ativan, Xanax, and Klonopin.

2. I also believe a script for a stimulant medication (ADD/ADHD) may also be helpful, though much of my inability to concentrate, get motivated, and stay awake are probably due to the anxiety and, to a lesser extent, the depression. I'm guessing Adderall, Ritalin, etc. would be the options in this case.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate some opinions on this issue. I am not asking for these pills to sell or abuse, but really feel that they could improve my schoolwork, recent social issues, and life in general. Thanks!!

Hi mjk0. I was once in your position when I had good insurance. I no longer have this option of a psych doctor. If the wellbutrin is helping you, I wouldn't recommend trying to change the mix. I've been on so many antidepressants I can't remember them all. In my experience, the more meds you take, the more you will continue to need. Try to avoid benzos if possible because they can lead you to a dependence you don't want. Don't try to convince your doctor for these drugs. They are not meant for long term anyway.

My doctor used to prescribe me provigil to help with staying awake during my shift. That's my extent with stimulants and I wouldn't advise them either. Once you get there, it can be a dark road. Think through this. You don't want to end up addicted. Don't take this the wrong way because I'm not trying to be negative. I forgot to say Welcome to Bluelight!

Thanks T, I definitely agree with the points you made and don't want to end up dependent on one of these meds. I do think, though, that even though the Wellbutrin helps with depression that I could really use something additional to help. I suppose something with less addictive properties may be better than the controlled substances that I mention. I'm not sure what docs like to combine with it, but if he thinks that there is a safe med to add into the mix that it could really improve my problems, which have increased pretty steadily in the past few months.

I agree with venrak. My friend is your age and has seen shrinks since he was pretty young and told me before he could ever ask a doctor what he wanted as a medication he had to go through all the other meds the doctor prescribed and on top of it was using that same shrink for five years until he could even begin to ask and receive

We don't allow "what do I say to my psych to get 'xyz' prescribed' threads.

Just be honest with him. It may take some time but if you need those meds you should eventually get them. If not, it's on to the next psych.

Closed.
