Unusual San Pedro Repotting

My San Pedro's health was heading south so I took a cutting about 6 inches below his top to replant and used the rest in an appropriate manner. I left the cutting out to dry so I could replant it, but something strange happened.

The cutting completely shriveled and rotted, but a second branch he grew since last summer remained unscathed. The branch grew from the top of the cactus and is completely fine about an month later despite its base being shriveled. The branch is about seven inches long and an inch thick at it's largest point (in the middle).

I want to replant him, honestly that cactus was my buddy. He sat next to my bed for over a year and I'd say hi to him every morning and meditate with him and stuff. Everywhere I go on the net it gives you advice for replanting larger cuttings, and says that if you don't cut it and let the cutting scab over the cactus will rot in the ground. It also advises that cutting be at least an inch thick.

Before I do anything drastic, I was wondering is anyone here could offer advice about replanting such as small cutting. I hope there's hope. Thanks in advance :)

first go visit mycotopia.net, they have an avid community of growers with TONS of planting/grafting advice.

I'd suggest keeping him in filtered indoor light, since i assume you are northern hemisphere so summertime now. Is that a fungus-infected rot where he was connected to the original stem? He will not recover until you get rid of the infection. You need horticultural sulfur to dust the wound after you injure the cactus, or fungus will surely take hold in the moist flesh before it gets a chance to dry out and scab over.

You may need to learn proper sterile technique for working with plant grafts if he is going to survive the operation.
