I understand this aint a doctors surgery and many people might say to seek professional medical advice , however I've tried that and don't seem to be getting anywhere. So if there's anyone with advice or similar experiences they would like to share I would much appreciate. Here's the issue ; I've been on mood stabalisers for a number of years now... Since I was about 24, I'm now 30. The quacks call them anti-psychotics , I just hate this term.... Anyway .... Started on olanzapine and al was fine and dandy, I had a massive appetite , which is very common, so I did put on weight. I was told there is a risk of diabetes on that med so considered an alternative.... And that was aripiprazole . Following the doctors guidelines I started on a small dose and increased it to a recommended theraputic dosage. From the offset of starting that medication I noticed the slight twitching in my legs! It was uncontrollable muscle spasm mainly in the legs which is very frustrating and worrying really. I consulted the doc , they advised to carry on with the med... And it was just 'teething problems ' ! Ok.... To cut a long story short, the twiching has never stopped and this is 3 years down the line! I have recently stopped taking the aripiprazole and the twiching is noticably less frequent. But still there... Still very annoying and itaffects me all day everyday. To be quite frank I'm pissed off with the whole thing. I followed the doctors orders and I might have to live with this for the rest of my life. I feel like I'm just another person trapped in the mental health system. We trust are doctors , psychiatrists to do the best and to help to the best of there ability. But to be honest in my experience they know and the whole medical profession know very little about treating mental health patients with medication. Don't get me wrong a lot of medication helps people, but even my doctor admitted that they know very little about the brain. Its just hit and miss I suppose. Like a big brain medication bingo! There's the rant over, I hope you understand my frustration and I hope others can contribute with similar experiences. Will the twiching stop?

Hi. When I took aripiprazole I had a lot of bad reactions among them twitching and tardive dyskinesia type stuff. It all got better on discontinuation.

I think sometimes doctors have to be really told emphatically that a side effect or problem is unacceptable. I think abilify is a really useful agent for a lot of people but some people really don't tolerate it. I think the dopamine partial agonist thing is likely a part of the problem, I'd be very leery of starting an agent with that same mode of action again because of how bad aripiprazole was for me. It caused extreme anxiety for me as well as the other problems.

This post has affinity with both the Dark Side Forum and the Healthy Living forum as both help people with psychiatrists, psych meds, and mental health stuff.

I'm going to send to TDS the mods there might choose to move it along. Hope thing get much better for you soon UR335599 :)

I had akathisia when I was on aripiprazole which was horrible but went away after using long enough. When I suddenly stopped I also had annoying twitching in my leg but it went away after a week or two of discontinuation. I guess I just got lucky. I've heard of a guy who had similar symptoms for years and then they just suddenly stopped. Hope the same happens for you.

yeah i have had similar problems with this. abilify is a piece of shit medication and it an cause td as easy as the older ones though they claim it wont.

I ended up going to a neurologist for my twitching, he prescribed haldol 1mg 3x day, says it can go up but worries of tardive dyskenisia keep him from prescribing higher doses.

Are you aware of tardive dyskenisia? Abify has this listed specifically as a side effect... invoulentary muscle moveements are the main symptom... I took ablilify for several months... I also had a lot of twitches on it andended up stopping taking it because it didn't work very well... it took about a year for the random twitching to fully subside after cessation... glad to say that I'm clean and good from anything except herb and the occasional psychedelic for several years now... never felt better... I'm not sure your diagnosis but I found that the more drugs they put me on, the more I went out and got on my own... one day I figured id try life without it all and well... it was better... lemme know if I've helped at all or if you have any questions... best wiahes :)
