Although I've not set my VPN to Iran, that is where the internet currently seems to believe I'm located, whenever I have it switched on.
"Ironic" isn't a strong enough word to use, to express the ridiculous and worrying reality that I have much more freedom on the internet, whilst it 'thinks' I'm in Iran, as opposed to being in the UK.
Outside of a few privacy / free speech focused channels on YouTube, the British public at large doesn't even seem to give a fuck, with most of them apparently swallowing the reasons that everything is being done for the protection of the children.
And there's no protests being reported about any of this, it's quite unbelievable.
Meanwhile, the banning of VPNs has been ruled out, so at least for now, the concern is theoretical.
Although my VPN subscription renewal time may be telling, I can't remember the way it was done. I think it may just have been a bank transfer, but even if my account could be traced in such a way, apparently it has been established that my provider genuinely does not keep any logs.
Again, most of my privacy concerns are about things I post openly on places like this. But it is my own free choice to do that. And I'm sure if the internet surveillance branch wanted to find out who I am, they could do so easily enough.
If they haven't done so already, but I doubt if I'm going to be of much interest to them though really, as the 'naughtiest' things I do are pretty much limited to buying my benzos online.
I would hope that the internet surveillance police have better or more important and interesting things to focus on.
But using the VPN doesn't make things as simple for the 'authorities' as simply reading the logs of my internet activities that my ISP could otherwise send on, if requested to do so. I would imagine that all of the initial monitoring is automated and done by AI, and only gets picked up by actual human agents, if the things being reported are serious or interesting enough.....
Who knows though, with the way things are going, and the speed at which they are going, I can easily imagine a dystopian future, not too far away, where AI gathers any evidence of any 'wrong doing', and also performs the role of judge, jury, and executioner. All without any humans in authority ever being involved.
