Crystal meth a Class A drug
Press Association
January 18, 2007

The sex and dance culture drug crystal meth has become a Class A drug in a bid to prevent it becoming a mainstream epidemic.

People who use the stimulant will face up to seven years in jail and an unlimited fine, while dealers could get life behind bars.

The ultra-addictive drug produces a "high" similar to crack cocaine when it is smoked or injected, but its effects are even more damaging.

Properly known as methamphetamine, its street names include ice, crazy medicine, go-fast and Nazi crank, after an apocryphal story that Adolf Hitler injected the substance twice daily.

American singer Rufus Wainwright is among the celebrities who have admitted former addictions to the synthetic drug's euphoric effects.

Home Office minister Vernon Coaker said: "Crystal meth is a very harmful drug but fortunately it is not widespread in the UK.

"However, we know from the experiences of other countries that it has the potential to ruin the lives of individuals and their families. We cannot afford to be complacent.

"Reclassification is a precautionary measure that helps to ensure crystal meth does not gain a foothold in the UK."

Moving the drug to Class A alongside heroin and cocaine means the police and the Serious Organised Crime Agency will make tackling it an even higher priority.

The drug can quickly become addictive and lead to depression, paranoia, violent behaviour, kidney failure and internal bleeding. It also leads to less inhibited sexual behaviour, and therefore to an increased risk of infection with HIV and other diseases.

The Home Office has released horrific photographs of the drug's effects on two women in the United States which demonstrated how crystal meth smoking can lead to rapid ageing and to "meth mouth" - a chronic rotting of teeth and gums.

There getting a little crazy with this...the fine can be as high as they choose?

Like I said, it doesn't seem like a "sex drug" to me...it does increase sexuality, but not a sex drug. Maybe a sexual drug?

Meth *can* be damaging, and it's a logical step for them anti-druggies to take.

Astavats, I know for sure some enjoy getting off when they're tweaking, so YMMV

Seven years in jail for *using* meth?!

thats insane.

I think they meant to say possession as there's no offence of using or consuming a drug in the UK... But in reality no one ever gets that long for simple possession, and usually non-custodial sentence would be expected for small amounts. If you got caught possessing enough of a Class A drug to warrant a jail sentence of seven years, the charges would almost certainly be possession with intent to supply anyway.

It's a pointless exercise making it Class A, since when did severity of sentence act as a significant detterant? It certainly doesn't stem the flow of drugs in other countries which have heavier penalties.

You are a mad man that shit made me so horny it was unbelievable i could spend a whole day watching porn if i wanted too. and i did.

I think this is a step in a good direction. I feel that meth has far, far more negative effects on its users and society in general than almost any other drug.

How is it a step in a good direction? What will it change? The penalties for offences involving drugs like meth are much higher in the US than the UK - has it made any difference there? Has it made any difference in SE Asia, were they even have the death penalty for drugs offences? Not a scrap of difference.

Mad man? Maybe! Watching poor all day? Probably! Being able to get it up? Just as bad as dxm =/ lol

I have limited experience with (meth)amphetamine, so I'm speaking from my experiences.

This is the bit that gets me.

Why does it need to be classified at a higher level (with all the negative consequences that classification brings) before SOCA are able to do anything?

Stupidity.
