Come on, there have got to be at least a few other fans of this sport on here. I don't recall ever seeing a thread about it, and I did do a few searches and as usual, found nothing.

Well, a few threads mentioned UFC or MMA fighting or whatnot. So, think of this as a thread where you can discuss anything MMA related, talk about the Ultimate Fighter series, if you've been to any shows by all means share your experiences, UFC in general, etc. Do you love or hate this sport? Why?

I personally like UFC fighting better than other combat sports strictly for the fact that many of these other sports only cover one aspect of what MMA covers. Also, boxing is boring, wrestling is 75% fake, and martial arts competitions have too many rules. Internal martial arts are great so don't get me wrong, but any fighter knows that in terms of self-defense, practical use and being an "ultimate" (or at least well-rounded) fighter, MMA training has the most benefits.

I think I prefer UFC to Pride FC, although Pride is more geared toward the striker whereas UFC is more geared toward the grappler. So my preference of UFC over Pride is a little odd considering I generally prefer for fights to go to the ground as little as possible, unless an impressive submission can take place fairly quickly. I've been in arm bars and a few other submissions and I can assure you, they're no fun. Unless you're the person applying them

Some of my favorite UFC fighters include:

Andre Arlovski - come on, the guy's a fucking beast. Ever seen him train, how hard he hits those mits?

Cro Cop - well, I've been rather disapointed in his performance since he lost to Gonzaga, although I'm sure that fight was a fluke, nothing more. Funny how he got knocked out by that kick, which is usually how he takes people out. But it's the guy's power that makes him so impressive, I've seen one fight where he kicked a guy in the ribs and the guy didn't feel it until a few seconds later. He simply crumbled to the ground. From what I've heard from people who have attended one or more UFC/Pride fight(s), you can hear it echo all the way across the building when they hit each other sometimes. During one fight in particular, it was so bad that the ring girls were crying and the people up front could probably feel the pain of the poor chump getting hit (I believe it was a Fedor fight, and that dude can hit with a punching style all his own).

Some of my other favorite fighters include: Sean Sherk, Lidelle, Rampage, Silva, Couture, Forrest Griffin and George Saint Pierre. Seriously I couldn't just pick one.

I know a lot of people hate on UFC and MMA in general, saying it's "barbaric" or "dangerous", that the figthers are "tatted up neanderthals", or some other inane form of hogwash. This could not be any further from the truth, I'll have you know.

For one thing, a lot of UFC fighters are actually well-educated, intelligent, purposefully driven individuals. Most of the people who pursue MMA as a career or lifestyle are not your stereotypical fighter, and while it may be true that a lot of them probably originally got into fighting as a means of masking insecurity, over-compensating for perceived inadequacies or otherwise "proving themselves", they also tend to be less egotistical than other athletes because they know they can physically defend themselves. So they don't necessarily feel they have anything to prove to anybody other than themselves, their fans, friends and families, if even that.

There is also quite a huge deal of athletic and technical skill, dedication, and knowledge involved in being successful in MMA. Many people probably assume quite illogically that any idiot off the street can just jump in the octagon and do what these guys do. Sure, they get paid but they also put a lot on the line in order to do so.

As far as safety, the way they have the rules set up in UFC prevents a fighter from being attacked once he can not intelligently defend himself. Any time a fighter is "cut", knocked out or taps out, the fight is over. It is possible for a match to be lost/won due to "doctor stoppage".

One continuous argument in the sports world is in regard to boxing actually being somehow safer or ("better") than MMA. I can see how somebody might prefer boxing because "better" is obviously subjective, although I think it's a retarded opinion to have. But when boxers are encouraged to continue fighting after being knocked out, it is the worse thing you could have someone do in such a situation. When you get knocked out, this results in minor head trauma to the brain stem. Sitting behind the jawbone joint is the deep temporal mandibular nerve - and I don't care how big you are - if you get hit on the jaw hard enough you will be "out" due to this bone slamming into that nerve. Of course you could define a knockout several different ways (and there are different kinds of knockouts, T.K.O. for instance) but from a medical perspective it is unwise to allow a person to continue fighting after this process occurs. Simply because you aren't out and are capable of standing within seconds of this sudden, disorienting and traumatic sensory overload does not imply that you ought to resume a match and expose yourself to possibility of receiving further damage. In conclusion, MMA is all about fighter safety and those refs WILL stop a fight if they feel it is warranted. I've never heard of anybody dieing in the entire history of MMA.

What do you think of MMA, bluelight?

i dont care for those fight, i think they are mainly boring, but i dont like to watch sport in general
judging from a show i saw once on tv i would rather see them train then fight
more entertaining and more informative

I agree that the training footage has a certain appeal, and it's certainly true that some fights are so boring that I'd rather watch the fighters train.

I love a good fight scene in martial arts flicks, but many would not be the same without training montages. As an example, many of the Rocky movies.

Also, it is interesting indeed to see the way a lot of MMA fighters train. This is one aspect of TUF that I think many people find attractive. That, and all the drama =D

but yea, watching fighters train is awesome, I feel you.

i'm a big fan of UFC and have been following it since waaaay back when it was more or less a barbaric bloodsport. those were the days of a single night tournament with no weight restrictions where a 165 pound brazilian by the name of grayce ran the whole damn show.

i can't stand the ultimate fighter though, i just watch the finales for the fights. the dramatization are a major turn off to me.

Did anyone see UFC 79 and the Liddell/Silva fight? It was ridiculous, the best stand up fight I have seen in a long time, they both took so much damage that I thought they might both collapse before the end of the fight.

I think its massively annoying how many people between the ages of 18-26ish are suddenly "doing MMA" and "training for MMA" and all this other BS. I think the sport is fine but people who make MMA some kind of pin they need to wear on their persona whenever they go out bug the hell out of me. Its like they need to prove something so they take up MMA and think it makes them important.

I hear you about the dudes that flaunt it with everything they do ... but why not have pride in your ability, when you train so hard to do what you do. You also have to understand that a lot of these people are from the ghettos, at least the ones I meet, and it kind of gives them a dream in life. Honestly I like to meet these guys because I admire their dedication, and you know if they like to talk about it that they have a lot of passion for the sport.

The people I have a problem with aren't the ones who are good at MMA or who try hard its the one's who aren't in peak shape and just use that shit as some kind of status symbol.

I guess my biggest issue with it is because I train hard daily (weight training) and I'm a pretty big guy at 255 or so lbs and 6'4" so when some dude who does MMA meets me its like they have to claim that shit so they can feel better about themselves because they know I'm bigger than they are. Not to sound cocky but that's the situation and its annoying because I could really give a shit about appearances and I just lift because its a fun hobby.. when people start either kissing my ass or claiming MMA shit it bugs the hell out of me (the kissing my ass thing is by far the most annoying shit ever).

I take Pride FC over the UFC anyday...

A lot of novice MMA fans who just got into watching the UFC in the last year or so have this idea that Pride was never that good... when in reality they were never watching MMA when Pride was in its prime...

Lets not forget here, the UFC bought Pride FC and all of their fighters, it is the Pride FC fighters who have had to make the adjustment to the new rules and environment of the UFC...

Mirko Cro Cop, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and Wanderlei Silva have not looked too sharp in their debuts/return in or to the octagon... but lets not forget Rampage came from Pride and he destroyed Liddell for the 2nd time (who many UFC fans swore was the best light heavyweight in the world..), Anderson Silva is also a Pride veteran who has completely cleaned out the UFC's MW division including their poster boy Rich Franklin (who many also believed was the best fighter @ that weight class in the world)..

All in all I am kind of happy the UFC has bought Pride because we now get to see match-ups that were never before possible, but on the other hand it seems like Dana White and the UFC management are trying to somehow make it look like UFC is the dominant organization by setting up fights... why not give Shogun an easy first fight in the UFC to build him up, instead of putting him up against Forrest Griffin, why should Wanderlei fight Chuck Liddell right away? Its hard to really give a good performance if you dont feel comfortable with your surroundings...

I think with some time the Pride fighters are going to rip things up in the UFC a la Fabrico Werdum @ UFC 80.. I also feel very bad for Mirko Cro Cop's next opponent... things in the UFC are going to change in 2008.

Lol, come on man, Shogun was supposed to tear through Forrest, let's not act like it was some conspiracy against PRIDE fighters. Zuffa tried to build up CC and Shogun with easy fights, they both blew it, and I'm fans of both of them and thought they'd both tear through their respective divisions.

Dana had been trying to make Chuck/Silva for YEARS, it almost got ruined AGAIN when Chuck lost to Jardine, why would they risk Silva losing before he fought Chuck and having the fight ruined some more? Besides Silva himself had been saying for some time he wanted to fight Chuck as soon as he could, it's not like they had to pressure him into it, I mean check out how upset Wanderlei looked after Jardine beat Chuck.

EDIT: I feel bad for CCs next opponent too since it will probably be some masked Mexican wrestler...jk...DREAM looks cool...but I'm not really kidding that much I guess...

I used to date Rashad Evans' sister. I never treated woman so good for fear of my life. :\

Favorites: Arlovski, Hughes, Sylvia.

I haven't kept current with UFC for almost a year now. I can't believe I missed Silva coming over to UFC and fighting Liddell. Who the hell won?

Yeah, watch out Rashad might have lay n' prayed you to death...jk I sure wouldn't want to fight him, might end up with a seizure like Sean Salmon.

Liddell won a decision in a great fight. For those who haven't seen it here is the funniest/possibly greatest moment in mma history...

my friend tried to tell me that boxing is a better style than mma, I was like wtf.

I went to the states (im an aussie chick) and saw UFC... I hadnt seen it before, and I was blown away... I have been doing muay thai for about 2 months, and I love it.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between mma, ufc and muay thai. I mean, when I watch, I know what im looking at but a written explanation would be good.

:)

the UFC league uses a MMA (mixed martial arts), this is submission wrestling with certain types of strikes (punches, kicks etc.) allowed. In Muay Thai one can only strike.
