U.S. Presidential Candidate Mike Gravel Says “All Drugs Should Be Legalized.”

Mike Who ? Yeah , never heard of him either. Wanna start taking bets how many votes he will get ? lol

Sad but true.

If you watch the next Democratic presidential debate, Crazeee, you'll know exactly who Mike Gravel is. He tends to make quite an impression.

Maybe so, but the average American would rather watch bullshit like American Idol over anything political. Crazeee's right - he hasn't got a chance.

Maybe they're doing it wrong...

Maybe Mike and Paul should try to get guest spots on American idol.

Anyone working for their campaigns that can push them in that direction?

Bill Richardson i'd think is for legalizing marijuana, at least medicinally, if not fully and if not all drugs. At least i'm sure he knows its what's best in his head, probably not best for his political career.

and whoever mentioned Al Gore running, i hope to god he jumps in right at the end, because he has a chance of winning, Hillary has NO CHANCE at all, Gore hasn't fucked up in 8 years or done anything stupid, no one can really HATE him like they can hate bush and to a much lesser extent hillary.

you'd be surprised how many people dislike her as much as you do. Nominating Hillary would be suicidal for the dems. .

Now see, that's what I keep saying. I can't stand/trust the bitch, and think if she were to get the dem nomination, you would see record numbers turning out at the polls just to make damn sure she didn't win... But every Democrat I know swears that she is "the one" and will win the nomination and (ultimately) the presidency. 8)

uh.... Can you say "An Inconvenient Truth"? There are a LOT of people that thinks he is full of shit. Let's not even mention the big dollar corporations (especially oil companies) that would do anything to keep him out of the office. I think he stands as much of a chance as Billary does.

if hes full of shit why do professors in universities like mine show An Inconvenient Truth in geology class? I believe the science community is behind Gore.

^ In case you haven't noticed, the political community hasn't exactly been behind the science community, except maybe to stick it where the sun don't shine... I've never been that big of a fan of Gore, but I'd vote for him over Hillary, Obama, or any republican any day.

Scientific community is an advasary of the government...

/me makes a note about the Federation of American Scientists(PDF) being ignored completely in 2001 after making very good remarks at the Sentencing Commission hearings about raising the penalties against MDMA... (I can't find the commission's report to congress now... They only cited Dr. Ricaurte's research - NIDA funded - that was retracted 2 years later.)http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1268210 - not what I was looking for but it summarizes my points...
A bill co-sponsored by Hillary Clinton (if you needed another reason to hate her...)

They ignored the scientific community...

Too bad he has no chance of winning the election. Neither does Kucinich or Paul. I have not checked all the other candidates. AFAIK, those are the only ones who favor drug legalization.

I don't think things will change for the better in my life time, it will probably gradually get worse. Not just the drug issue, everything will get worse.

I'm not ruling out Ron Paul just yet.
As the media turns on it's feeding hand and begins to support him - calling the rest of the Republican candidates crazy - he may have the power and support to actually take the nomination.

The people are tired of what's been going on...
Both parties look like they're promising more of the same...

When his message wasn't getting out, I wasn't going to put a dime on Paul winning the nomination.

Now?
I'm not so sure.

We'll see what happens in Michigan.
He might start pulling ahead if more people start paying attention.

More from Gravel

http://blogs.salon.com/0002762/2007/05/23.html#a2272

Gatto: I have seen what Cocaine, Heroin and Meth do to good people. What would you do to stop the abuse of these drugs if they are legalized?

Senator Gravel: First of all, I do have a program to legalize the regulation of hard drugs. I think we ought to stop the prohibition of Marijuana and let marijuana be sold in liquor stores. You get a much bigger high off of drinking a fifth of scotch, than you would off a couple of packs of marijuana. That's why it should be legalized. Now the regulation, the legalization of hard drugs is a whole other matter. What we have to do is stop criminalizing this whole drug problem, the addiction problem. This is a public health problem. It's not a criminal problem. What we need to do is to one; to identify these drug users so that they can get their drugs by prescription from a doctor, they are thereby registered to a registry, so that we can begin to monitor these people and try to proselytize them, and help them to get off of drugs. That's not what happens today, what happens today... you're criminalized, you're thrown in jail, half the people in jail have a drug problem, and we don't address that at all. It's a health issue and we don't look at it for what it is, it's a health issue, ,so my hope would be, this whole war on drugs is a hoax we spend 50 to 70 billion dollars a year on it, and it's no more effective than prohibition was against alcohol back in the 20's. All it does is criminalizing a major segment of our population and cause another major segment to break the law, lose respect for the law, because it is just bad law, and so I would really push on both sides of that and keep in mind, those that try to tell the American people that they have nothing to fear but fear itself. That's what I would try to do under this present situation is that you don't need all this fear of the terrorists, of people of color, gays this is overblown, totally overblown, in addition to fighting this problem of fear with the American public through leadership, I would call on the courage in us, not the fear in us to address our collective problems. Then, at the same time like Roosevelt, I would do away with the prohibition that we have in respect to marijuana, and bring the legalization of hard drugs, legalization of the regulation of hard drugs.

Gatto: I wrote an article on the war on drugs it's the same as the war on terror, it's a never-ending thing, it's a self-perpetuating thing. When are the American People going to realize that? Maybe when you're the president?

Gravel: Yes we engage these issues. You don't hear the front tier candidates talking about this on the drug war. You don't hear them talking about the military industrial complex. With their interviews, its politics as usual, they say a lot, but don't say anything.

He has my support all the way. we have more than year to get this guy a leg up. Obama and Clinton are pretty much the same goddamn candidate. You're not getting anything special by voting for either of them. If Gravel wins this election we'll magically start seeing less people go to jail, less people shot and mugged because they had to cop in the ghetto, less people dying of overdoses because they have no information on the quality of their drug, and less people dying In the deserts of Iraq.

I'm going to make everyone know this guys name

This stuff won't happen by magic...
And I agree with Mike Gravel's points, but I don't know that he has all the information he needs to back his positions.

In my dreams, Ron Paul and Mike Gravel drop from their parties and run together as a team.

I'll have to keep dreaming though...
Ron has the facts to back Mike's enthusiasm, and Mike has the charisma to pull the whole thing off (even if it does make him appear a little goofy...)
Ron also is getting the media support...

I'll keep hoping.

I think Gravel is a little too out there for the majority of America right now...

Ron Paul on the other hand... I think he has a damn good shot... everyone is so pissed off at the republican party as it is right now... I mean.. who else is going to take the Republican Nomination? Guilliani or McCain. No one likes McCain and Guilliani really knows shit about anything. You're talking about a mayor of a city, vs. a Duke M.D. who served in the Air Force and then Congress since the 70's. A guy who has consistently stood behinds his ideals and those of individual rights.

I'm all about Paul... I like Gravel.. he just doesn't really have a chance right now. :(

That's kinda what I was saying...

But then I watched some of his videos and he really isn't that crazy.
He just gets worked up on-stage.

Does Gravel have a position on the legalisation of psychedelics? If I lived in the US I'd vote for this guy for sure

"We need to legalize the regulation of drugs. The drug problem is a public health problem. It's not a criminal problem. We make it a criminal problem because we treat people like criminals. You take a drug addict, you throw him in jail, you leave him there, and he learns the criminal trade so that when he gets out you have recidivism."

But he also talks about alternative punishments for non-violent drug offenders...

So I don't know.

Again, he's saying the right things for the wrong reasons.
The right reason?
The Federal Government does not have the constitutional authority to prohibit/make drugs illegal.
Period.

This is up to the states.

While it would be nice to have a mandate making all drugs legal, this would still violate the constitution.

Ron Paul wants to give the power to regulate drugs back to the states (see the 18th and 21st amendments - they did the same thing with alcohol... Since there was no constitutional amendment made granting the Federal Government the right to regulate/prohibit drugs, the Federal Drug laws are illegal and wrong.)

I don't know Gore's stance on drugs, but he seems like the best of the viable choices. The only problem is all the bullshit and lies that got spread about him when he did run. When people hear Gore they think, "Isn't he the guy that said he invented the internet?"
