I've gotta disagree on the date rape part. The first time my wife and I took GHB, I was mistaken about the concentration and our dose was too high, taken too quickly. I was okay, albeit very drunk-feeling and uncoordinated. She, however, lost consciousness for about 3 hours, totally unresponsive to being spoken to, shouting, shaking, and eventually even some slapping. I was probably the closest to total panic I have ever been. She didn't vomit, and she was breathing, so I didn't go the hospital route and she eventually woke up on her own, but with no recollection of any of my attempts to wake her. If it had been a date-rape scenario I probably could have done anything and she'd have had no idea, and then she woke up with no aftereffects.
I highly doubt GHB is used as a date-rape drug anywhere near as often as the media likes to portray, but I believe it absolutely COULD be used as one.
Most people remember everything as they wake up. The half life is 30minutes to an hour, and if any other downers are mixed in it makes the drug deadly instead of dangerous. It would be a good way to get charged with rape and/or murder. I really doubt anyone with any knowledge of GHB's actual statistics would rape using it. Not to mention, someone could get a hold of a xanax prescription and rape just as easily.
