we met, and became friends,
through a series of the strangest circumstances…
your family knowing the “love of my life”
it seemed unusual to those outside of the circle,
that you always surrounded yourself with people so much younger
but we all understood
especially you and I,
us girls
we brought out the best in each other,
and sometimes the worst—at the bars and the beach
the parties and the pool,
when we began to sense each others unhappiness
and kept any little secrets we happened to come upon,
When the cats were away.
Then that night, when I was sitting upstairs with your daughter,
she needing to comfort me more than I her
When I heard you tell him you were leaving
and the silence hung in the air
and I knew that I was upset for more reasons than this
I had witnessed just one more love fall apart
After 18 odd years
You see it isn’t really forever,
we began to share feelings concerning this,
discovering that apathy is far worse than nothing at all,
now knowing why we got along so well,
because we were both in the same place
and I soon followed suit, and left
becoming infinitely more happy
we both moved on, and
our paths no longer crossed as they had
and we lost that bond
that had been so important
but I still remember our summer,
when we gave up everything we knew
to find out what else we didn’t.
