#1 what is the pharmacology of ephedrine.. I ahvent heard to much of this, maybe a dopamine reuptake blocker with strong affinity for adrenaline??
#2 does ephedrine or (ritalin in this case) have a cross tolerance with amphetamine?

I'm not so sure about your first question, but I do know that Ritalin has a small, but real cross tolerance to amphetamine.

i think it releases epinephren (sp?) or noreprine (sp?), and triggers the "fight or flight" thing. basically it makes you hot, sweaty, and twitchy.

I believe it was quale who said, that it acts as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor like ritalin\cocaine. Do a search for it in the Other Drugs Archive...

Ephedrine acts mainly on postsynaptic alpha-adrenoceptors directly with some NE-releasing action which may involve the activation of presynaptic beta-adrenoceptors.
Bao JX, Wang B, Yang ZC.[Effects of ephedrine on postsynaptic alpha-adrenoceptors and presynaptic beta-adrenoceptors in isolated guinea pig portal veins]Zhongguo Yao Li Xue Bao. 1990 Mar;11(2):130-3.
Amphetamines increase dopamine levels by twice as much as ephedrine does.
Ephedrine affects the adrenergic system strongly, thus the yucky side effects.
I believe there is some very slight cross tolerance between ephedrine and amphetamines.

I always thought ephedrine and meth had very similar action, the main difference being that the ephedrine molecule had an extra -OH group which made transfer across the blood-brain barrier less efficient.
Was I completely wrong ?
:)
