what are your favourite television sports programs? who are your favourite commentators.

i'm a big fan of nfl football and i really enjoy the monday night football coverage. who ever came up with the idea of football on a monday night in the first place was a genius. the commentators all have great nfl knowledge and there's a pretty playful atmosphere in keeping with the monday night vibe.

chris berman is probably my favourite sports commentator across all sports.

i'm also a big fan of the espn coverage of the wsop. discussions as to whether poker is a sport aside, the edit is pretty tight and norman chad and lon mceachern keep a good balance between levity and action.

My favorite sports shows are: Baseball Tonight, Cold Pizza (but not anymore since Woody Paige made that show), and Around The Horn and PTI.

Commentators: Charles Barkley and Bill Walton, hands down. They're the only ones with any sort of personality and who speak their minds.

i'm a big Woody Paige fan which is why i love around the horn. also a big pardon the interruption fan cause kornheiser owns.

the one thing i DONT like is baseball on fox. joe buck can blow me.

I actually watch PTI because of how easy it is to make fun of those guys (Wilbon and Kornheiser + Lebatard and whoever else may be on). It got to the point last summer where we made a game out of predicting the topics on the show, and it became pretty easy. Those guys are the biggest bandwagon jumper-onners. Not that most sports commentators aren't, but PTI is a show full of useless banter and the opinions don't really matter because they'll change on a whim.

alasdair... i actually used to HATE chris berman, but those were the days before i had cable. once i got cable and saw more of him, including his commentary on the NFL recaps... i realized how funny he is hah. i always get his entertaining quips stuck in my head!

also... kornheiser was another one who i was a little iffy on, until he admitted that hockey is one of the best sports to see live. then i warmed up to him more.

don cherry is by far my favorite. he's QUITE the outspoken commentator. every saturday during hockey season, i find myself waiting anxiously for coach's corner to come on during the 2nd intermission of HNIC. he's funny, outspoken, and knows hockey. plus i find that i agree with MOST (not all) of what he says.

kenny mayne is one of my favorites though. he's so funny in a condescending way, i always LOVED 2 minute drill. by far the best trivia game show on tv. stewart scott and the schwab are also classy fellows. haha... schwabs annoying at times, but his knowledge of sports and his ability to retain statistics and recall them with such ease is something that constantly draws me in. im impressed. hehe.

and if we can go old school, ya gotta love harry caray.

and lastly, i dont know if you consider local sports fair game, but tom hamilton and mike hegan are awesome radio broadcasters for the cleveland indians.

How do you guys rate the average quality of American commentators on the big American sports? Because ESPN's coverage of soccer is rubbish. (Not that English commentators are much better).

For that matter, most NZ sports coverage is pretty bad - telling us what we can already see. I wish there was an option of getting commentary tailored to a beginner, intermediate, and expert fan. Sure, three levels of commentary makes it more expensive, but it would be worth it (and should be possible in the digital age).

I like (former NZ rugby legend turned commentator) Murray Mexted a lot, but mainly for his many and varied fuck-ups.

i find most espn commentary of baseball to be like a potato chip without salt, ie bland and insipid. last year, monday night football blew. haven't seen it this year but i always liked ron jaworski as an analyst.

in general, the network sports announcers stink, the local ones are usually better, although watching phillies games means you have to suffer through chris wheeler.

SOME are ok... but thinking of people like john madden make you want to toss that theory all away.

Best Programming and Personalities:

^^ I Second that. I love the TNT NBA crew in general, probably my favorite in any sport (Barkley, Kenny Smith, Ernie Johnson). Walton is just CLASSIC. I would watch the T-Wolves versus the Grizzlies if Walton was announcing.

PTI on ESPN is quality, Around the Horn is usually good, once in a while some of the guys get on my nerves (especially Jay Mariotti and that dude with the lisp).

Even though I am biased because I am a Met fan, I really like SNY's coverage of Met games. I think Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez are good, and Gary Cohen is simply one of the best in the business; entertaining, knowledgeable, and actually not a huge homer.

ESPN Football College Gameday is very good, and I'm not even much of a fan.

Love Mike and Mike,...Outside the Lines is often quite good. Love Stephen A. Smith, although his tv show wasn't great, his radio show kicks ass, and his guests spots are great.

NBA: Greg Anthony, Tim Legler, Steve Kerr, Marv Albert..all good

NFL: Troy Aikman

Woody Paige

Worst Programming and/or personalities: the HBO football crew (other than Bob Costas), a bunch of egocentric and/or boring pricks, Jim Rome (awful, NOT FUNNY AT ALL), Baseball Tonight (Phillips is a huge prick, Hershiser is boring), Joe Morgan and that dumb white dude he works with, Joe Buck, Madden doesn't even make sense any more, Craig Sager is awful, TBS SHOULD NOT have the MLB Playoffs....Ripkin, Gwynn, Frank Thomas great ball players, horrible commentators..Sean Salisbury...Terry Bradshaw, MARINO,

Almost anything on FOX

I think Skip Bayless may be one of the worst overall in any sport. Completely talks out of his ass...makes stupid statements just to be different

For you New Yorkers, I loath Mike and the Mad Dog...Especially Russo...what a goddamn fool.

Michael Kay knows his shit, but he is such a Yankee homer it gets bothersome

My Favorite Sportscasters Ever:

(1) Howard Cosell

(2) Bob Costas

(3) Brent Musburger

(4) Dick Vitale

(5) Tony Kornheiser

(6) Cris Collinsworth

(7) Phil Rizzuto

(8.) Vin Scully

(9) John McEnroe

(10) Seamus Malin

Probably 1500 IQ points among those ten (and in addition to their respective plethora of skills, from wit to eloquence, to flat-out breaking shit down logically (a la Collinsworth), and that's including all 70 of Dicky V's and all 75 of Rizzuto's. :)

An elite announcer can elevate an otherwise compelling game into a must-see, and if lightning strikes ("I can't believe what I just saw!" or "Do you believe in miracles . . . YES!"), the announcer helps in making the game immortal.

I like Dicky V, but man, it has to be in small doses. :) I'll take his boy Digger over him any day of the week.

I competely feel you, but with that said, like Musburger, even though Dicky V was a tad too over-the-top at times, it was that very childlike wonder and unbridled ENTHUSIAM that helps elevate the big games like Duke-Carolina and Cowboys-Niners ('90's) games into into classsics.

I could be on a month-long meth binge and fart out better "sports analysis" and "wit" than that Jim Rome blowhard, (as can most overgrown frat-boy pricks, of which he is one).

He might have 100 times my net worth, and millions of more fans than I do (so far), but I wouldnt trade lives with that prick even if it meant I got to literally lick Kobe Bryant's balls.

And anyway, I'm gonna end up licking Kobe's balls the old fashioned way.

I'm gonna earn it.

That is very true. You can't NOT help but get a little excited about a game when Vitale is absolutely losing his mind over it. :)

On a side note, I know Stephen A. Smith can be quite a polarizing personality; you either love him or hate him.

Personally, I love the guy. His radio show is terrific. He is honest, knows his stuff (especially basketball) and is just down right funny.

I had the pleasure of meeting Stephen A. at Shea Stadium on opening day this year, as 1050 ESPN radio was doing their segment from outside the stadium that day. I walked right up to him and told him I was a huge fan. He shook my hand, gave me a big smile, and told me he appreciated it. I bullshitted with him for a minute about the Knicks (he loves to rant about the Knicks), and he genuinely looked like he cared, he didn't act as if he had better things to do. An absolute class act.

I am also a big Max Kellerman fan, and have heard he is a really cool guy as well.
