tv: Planet Earth on Discovery Channel

I have recently been given the DVD set of Planet Earth, never having seen it before. I am totally blown away! This series is amazing. The effect this had on me was similar to the first time I watched a Jacques Cousteau documentary at age 6. The camera work (and editing) leaves one speechless. There were so many times during the shows where I couldn't help but think to myself, "how on earth did they do that?!". Simply amazing!

If you're going after the DVD set, please, please make sure you get the original BBC release on the BBC Video label, not the Americanised version on the Discovery label. Although I do not wish to take anything away from Sigourney Weaver's narration of the American release, it simply cannot compare to the Original U.K. broadcast version narrated by David Attenborough. Get the HD DVD if you can.

Five stars without a second's hesitation.

I was just popping on to make a post about this ... I was reading a review about the show the other day, and they said the exact opposite of what you said. They stated that the Discovery Channel version was better, while the BBC original ended up more like boring science class room video. Any truth? Not making judgments in the least on which is better, without having viewed both myself. But I love the American version, and was intrigued as to other's views were.

Maybe I should quit being cheap and just buy the BBC version ;)

The BBC naration is far more superb.

Also 2nded what finder said, as well as Amorroark

Got this on Blu-Ray, one of the only things that was actually worth it from that medium.

Plenty of sample videos available on YouTube and Google Video. I understand that Sigourney Weaver is a conservationist, but they could have chosen someone with much better narrating skills for the American production.

I'd like to see that review myself, as I think they got it exactly the opposite. It is Sigourney Weaver's narration which comes across as monotonous to the extreme and devoid of any emotion. Some actually prefer this, but most, after having seen even one episode by Attenborough, can hardly sit through the Weaver experience.

Here are a couple of reactions:

"I tried to watch an episode of Planet Earth tonight and had to turn it off. I found the narration to be so dull and lifeless, as if a bored schoolkid was reading aloud a poorly written class exercise. I had thought that Sir David Attenborough was supposed to be the narrator for this show so I searched the World Wide Web and found this webpage. I was shocked to find out that the narrator was Sigourney Weaver. I would have expected something more engaging from her.

Having said that, the main problem is that she is an actor, and as such has been paid to read a prepared script for the show. By contrast David Attenborough is a wildlife expert, and as such conveys a boyish sense of enthusiasm whenever he narrates nature programmes. One only has to watch Life on Earth, or Trials of Life to feel his infectious love for the subject.

I would like to give Planet Earth another chance, but I will be sure to buy a DVD set with David Attenborough narrating, so that the magnificent visuals are accompanied by an appropriately engaging and captivating narration." - source

"Unfortunately, Discovery couldn't leave swell enough alone when importing this production, which aired last year in Canada and the United Kingdom. Attenborough's voice was foolishly replaced with a languorous, drowsy narration by actress Sigourney Weaver, who was chosen for her reputation as a conservationist. In a quiet sequence about creatures that live in near-total darkness more than 1,600 feet down, the combination of Weaver, the eerie music and the slow-moving creatures is sleep-inducing." - source

Finally, this should give you a small taste of each.

- U.S. version
- U.K. Version

and for shits and giggles...

- Japanese Version

Remember that this is a lengthy documentary series. Which one is less likely to put you to sleep?
