There is non real point to this but i was curious so
A. One diphenhydramine 25 mg in a empty bottle with five or so ml of 18percent etoh wine.
B. Mixed for a few seconds
Ran under hot water for a minute or so just enough to have a pressure change rotating from the alcohol turning to gas and collecting on top
C. Driped all the liquid onto my forarm using the cap and air for pressure until only clear etoh came out rubbed it on
D. Sprayedna very small mount of deet like id say one squirt as fast as possible rubbed it in.

My proposed mechanism is dph hcl in water + deet (ethanolamine accepts hydrogens charge) - dph free base + deet hcl in etoh

It was just for chemistry nerd fun. I had to take onenajyway for ibs so i figured why not. Inwasnwindering what you guys thought. Can anyone find any errors i made ormhave anything on differences orally vs dermally

DEET is not a base, it's an amide, so it won't accept HCl.

You do realize that diphenhydramine HCl is formulated into topical creams without needing to be freebased? (Check the label on some Benadryl cream). So really you don't need the DEET at all, just add a solution of diphenhydramine in water to some facial creme base.

Diphenhydramine applied topically is good for local allergic irritations like poison ivy or bug bites. I think it's also a mild anesthetic/anti-itching agent too.

For systemic effects like prevention of nausea a suppository is better as the actual bioavailibility of diphenhydramine through the skin is very low.

Thats interesting ima youbg guy can you explain why deet cant hcl please. I looked it up and i am a bit confused. Do amides easily break down? i got the spray i was just bored.

Does the suppository have strong effects than oeally? I take it for my lower gi spasms.

Thanks for your help very helpful improving my knowledge of chemistty

I'll chime in (sorry Seiko if you really wanted to answer)...amide nitrogens are not basic like amines.

Heh 5ht2a our names are so similar. Ahhh thx. Do amides undergo any interesting reactions? (In general not necessarily for a clear application I am just interested in chemistry)
