Opioids Tramadol to reduce intercranial hypertension

For whatever reason, be it stress, depression, or my brain tumour, one of the three is causing me tremendous headaches. Sometimes they are incapacitating, so after a doctors appointment I was perscribed Tramadol.

However this rang alarm bells to me, as if tramadol reduces the seizure threshold, and a neurological condition can increase the likleyhood of siezures, isnt this a dodgey route to go down? Or will it be fine?

Although all opioids decrease seizure threshold, tramadol is unique in here as this even limits its daily dose to 400mg (while morphine dose can virtually be increased indefinitely for a patient with cancer).

I don't think it's a good solution to your problem. I have no idea why you've been prescribed tramadol. It's no better as an aid here than codeine (I'm already seeing choir of tramadol enthusiasts denying that; well, codeine simply isn't prescribed in doses close to 50mg a tablet in too many countries and it's a standard dose for IR capsules with tramadol). Codeine with the help of paracetamol would be a better solution but if it's going to be long-term then probably something a bit stronger without paracetamol would be more suitable, e.g. dihydrocodeine.

^ totally agree with adder. Tramadol is known to actually cause headaches and possible seizures with some people, i would definatly stay away from it, go for codeine.
