Opioids Tramadol or Codeine

tramadol has worse WDs from what i hear, i only took tramadol once and didnt like it very much, but my experiences with codeine have been pretty fun, and the WDs weren't all that bad (although i didnt have a big habit, it was like 2 weeks on 300 mgs codeine a day)

I've never become dependent on codeine, so I don't know how the w/d is...tramadol withdrawal is pretty hellish, but the worst part about it for me is the pain I'm in...I prefer codeine at a close to equivalent high dosage (6 T4's vs. 6 trams) in terms of analgesia, but that might be because I've been Rx'ed tramadol at maximum daily dose for about 15 months...

I prefer codeine, of course. Tramadol is weak as hell and has no opioid side effects. Not a true opioid. Codeine on the other hand is a true opiate in every sense of the word.
Tramadol does not have worse withdrawals than codeine. Tramadol has minimal opioid withdrawal symptoms.

This is going to be biased because I can't metabolize codeine, so Tramadol. If we're comparing Tramadol to morphine(to which codeine is a pro-drug), morphine wins.

So all in all, I guess codeine.

Codeine is NOT a morphine prodrug. More than 80% of codeine is metabolized into codeine-6-glucuronide (C6G) and that is the metabolite responsible for codeine's side effects. Only 3-5% of codeine is O-demethylated to morphine, which is quickly excreted anyways. The rest is is N-demethylized to norcodeine.

Heroin is a morphine prodrug - 100% of it is converted into morphine. Yes, even through the IV route, first it's converted into morphine and a very small percent is converted into 6-MAM, which is also converted into morphine eventually.

Damn, and here I was thinking that C6G was a minor metabolite. I guess I have that backwards then. Thanks for clearing that up.

I find codeine sedation, although pleasant, interferes with my day to day functioning to an extent whereas tramadol is more stimulating, I can study like a beast (not a phrase I'm proud of using) on it. I have just read about horror stories of tramadol withdrawal, so that's the only thing preventing me from switching entirely to tramadol.

OD is not a place to ask which drug do you prefer and why.
