Hi

What sort of antidepressant is tramadol. I know its meant for pain but what sort of ad is it. Is it a ssri a ssni or any of the others?

Thanks

I cant answer your question exactly, But I do know that tramadol does have synthetic opiates in it, And Iv been told by a handful of friends that you withdrawal badly when you try to come off of it, an that it was also a worse withdrawal than oxycotton and other related opiates!!

Thats not fact though, Iv just heard it many times. thought I'd let ya know, because many people do not know about tramadol being capable of making you dependent of it..

K cool thanks for the replies. I got my hands on a couple hundred last month n eva since I've felt great so wanted to ask my doc for an ad that is the same as tram obviously it won't be exactly the same cuz it won't have the opiate feeling to it but might help with my slight anxiety issues

Thanks again

Yeah no prob, I am a sufferer of high anxiety also.. Iv tried almost every medication out there and nothing worked for me other than the benzo class of meds (xanax, klonapin, Vallium)
those work great, but are highly addictive as well.

have you ever tried taking the Vitamin, B-complex? If you have not then I would suggest trying that out. whenever you feel some anxiety coming on, you take double the dose that is recommended on the bottle.. That works wonders for me, and a few of my family members that also have anxiety.

if your not worried about the addictive part of benzo's then I would recommend one of those listed above. they work wonders.

-Vallium is the weakest out of the three so it is least likely to make you fall asleep in the daytime.
-klonapin is right in between the two but has a very LONG "half life" so it's a bit more mild that xanax but is effective much longer (like 6-8 hours)
- Xanax hits you the fastest out of the three and is very powerful, but only lasts for about 2-3 hours

the antidepressant like tramadol is effexor but if you can get your doc just to keep you on tramadol i don't see why that wouldn't work great. I don't think SSRI's and especially SNRI's are helpful for anxiety but that is my experience. I find them stimulating, quite stimulating, to the point of insomnia and restlessness. I think the anxiolytic properties of tramadol are due to it's opioid side. As well, effexor (along with other AD) create a very strong dependency and the withdrawals are quite bad. Something to keep in mind.

I'm not convinced that SSRI/SNRI are as useful as they would have you believe, but for certain people I'm sure they have very practical, very real applications.
If your anxiety issues are only slight, then I might advise staying off meds which have serious "discontinuation syndromes", ie. withdrawal symptoms. Antidepressants are bad in that respect, tramadol is pretty awful, having both antidepressant and opioid action. The opioid withdrawals last a good while, it being relatively long-acting, and once you're done with those, the antidepressants can still take months to wean off...

Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine which is anxiolytic; not the strongest, but might be just right for "slight anxiety issues". Also, tolerance does not build up, nor any significant dependance.

I've come off tramadol and I'd only had 180x100mg over the course of about 9 weeks I think? I was a fucking asshole, apparently, for two weeks after, and completely delusional and paranoid for half of the first. Also, slightly spastic, with mild brain zaps (experienced the hellish variety with benzo withdrawal), strange aches in muscles I wasn't aware I had. Never absolutely terrible - just two weeks of constant crap with occasional pitfalls into shit territory.

i think being a selective serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor and the affinity for the mu opioid receptor are what make tramadol a successful antidepressant/painkiller for some people. but on the otherhand a not so good combination for others; seizures, serotonin syndrome risks, etc.

unfortunately there hasn't been too much research into specific combinations and how effective they may be but i found this little piece. Prevalence of side effects of prolonged low or moderate dose opioid therapy with concomitant benzodiazepine and/or antidepressant therapy in chronic non-cancer pain.
