Opioids tramadol antidepressant properties

hi all

last nite i took 3x tramacet (37,5mg tramadol, 325mg APAP each) on nearly full stomach. very few noticeable effects. previous week i had insuffilated 8mg dilaudid on a couple occasions to give u an idea of my use and tolerance. this morning i took 3x more tramacets on a empty stomach and ive had a very positive mood lift as well as slight good feeling body buzz. ive struggled with depression for awhile and these pills seem to put me in a good state mentally. im not high but i feel good and positive which i struggle to do alot. ive been considering seeing a doctor about it but have been wary of antidepressants. but what kind of antidepressant is this? what depression specific drugs should i look into to speak with my doctor about based on this experience?

Tramadol is a mixed opioid/SNRI. It's more of a stimulating opioid with mood lifting properties due to the Serotonin, Norepinephe Reuptake Inhibitor activity. Do not take tramadol with an anti-depressant unless co-prescribed by a qualified position.

Its funny because Tramadol's antidepressant action is most similar to a very similar antidepressant to the one most people rag on (I know that was convoluted). When people say they are against antidepressants they are most likely talking about a class called SSRIs. SNRIs are just a step away from SSRIs. Tramadol works as an SNRI.

Don't be wary about them. They're troves better than trying to self-medicate with anything, let alone opiates.

A doctor would most likely start you on Prozac, an SSRI, then move to an SNRI if about three SSRIs don't work, but don't quote me. SSRIs can work great for depression.

Tramadol is an opioid agonist that also inhibits the Reuptake of Seretonin and Norepeniphren (so, similar to SNRI's). Other Antidepressant's of this type would include Vanlafaxine (Effexor) and Duloxetine (Cymbalta) to name a few. If you do a search for SNRI's you'll find tons of lists of medications that fall into this class. However, there's a chance that the "good and positive" feelings you are experiencing have more to do with the Mu opiate receptor activity agonized by the tramadol (or just a mixture of the two). I suppose though that if you struggle with depression, it could be worth looking into these types of drugs, just know that mixing them with Tramadol (along with a long list of other substances) can be very dangerous.

I would hate to be dependent on tramadol because that drug is so damned dangerous, has horrific interactions with damn near everything, seizures left and right, serotonin syndrome risk etc

Tramadol induced serotonin syndrome was one of the most painful experiences of my life, and I had no medical assistance. Tramadol should be taken seriously.

If you are on any other antidepressants, please, like the other posters mentioned, use EXTREME caution because it lowers the seizure thresh hold and can cause serotonin syndrome.

I experienced both seizures and serotonin syndrome because my doctor clearly didn't know what they were doing and thought it would be great to prescribe be tramadol + Zoloft at the same time. Pharmacy didn't pick up on this interaction either...

Be sure to find a doctor well educated on this and not a doctor who didn't know what they were doing like mine. For the record, I've since switched doctors.
