This is not a trip report, this is about the affects tramadol has on me as an individual and what I have learned about this unique drug.
First some background. I have used tramadol for over a year now. First for pain (2 weeks at 3-400mg per day) then weekends only at 200mg on a Sat and Sunday. Finally I also started taking 50mg per day for its antidepressant affect.
Tramadol is a drug of 2 halves!
Tramadol is unique in that it has two distinct stages of effect. I know this is due to the parent drug converting via Cyp2d6 enzyme to o-desmethyltramadol. The first speedier stage is followed later on by a more mellow relaxing buzz. I personally prefer the first stage of the drug. I find it to be uplifting and calming at the same time. I can deal with any pressure life has for me in a calm but motivated way. I get s#!t done in this faze. Anything that needed doing is done now. Many put it down to the snri affect and that may be true but for me its more than that. It feels almost like a very mild mdma buzz but at the same to it enhances my concentration and motivates me to get stuff done.
The next stage which is the Opiate stage for me is very mellow. Its an ok buzz but I find it a bit to 'mongy'. I know many prefer this side but not me. I like the uplifting feeling of the first faze.
It lasts for hours
This is what I really like. For the the faze 1 lasts around 2 1/2 hours. The second stage seems to last a lot longer, but tbh I am not sure how long.
It varies ALOT from one day to the next
This is where I find tramadol to be most odd. One day I get a good clean buzz out of only 150mg while another day I need at least twice that to feel it. Obviously there is a variant I am not aware of that affects this and would be interested if anyone has any ideas on the variation of required dose.
Tolerance
Having taken tramadol for a year now I have found that the first uplifting stage is the first to dwindle. The second stage seems just as strong but the uplifting buzz I enjoy most is the first to go
Fluoxetine affects tramadol
When I was first given tramadol for pain I was on 20mg per day Fluoxetine for depression and anxiety. When I stopped taking fluoxetine I found I only needed half the amount to get the same buzz BUT it also halved in duration of its affect. I never had any problems with Serotonin syndrome but was aware of it even if my GP was not. This is probably because fluoxetine inhibits cyp2d6 and so slows its conversion and also slow its clearance. I wouldn't recommend using it to prolong a trip though as fluoxetine gives crappy sides.
Tramadol affects your sex life!
This affect is VERY dose dependant for me. All drugs seem to make me horny and tramadol is not exception. BUT the affects are dose dependant. After 50-100mg I have great sex, love it. Over 100mg and its negative affects come in to play. I get hard but its more a semi than full on but worst of all I say goodbye to cummin. Its just not gonna happen after 200mg plus.
Its a great antidepressant
As I said above I take 50mg a day for its antidepressant effects. Life has colour for me now. I feel more confidant and a lot less stressed, I cope with life again for the first time in a very long time. I have tried various antidepressant meds with fluoxetine beng the last one and none come close to Tramadol. It just works and I don't get any side of a single 50mg dose. The sode I got from std ssri ranged from wanting to sleep all the time with zero motivation and erictile problems. Citalopram was the worst but they all gave me trouble. Tramadol make me more sociable, motivated and confidant like I was when I was younger. I also enjoy time with my children again and for me that was the best off all. No longer am I over-whelmed by them. I have fun with them and help them with day to day stuff like a parent should.
It affects my sleep.
Dose dependant. Up to 100mg no problems with sleep. As I go higher sleep issues are more pronounced. I go to bed around 5-6 hours after my last dose. I don't sleep well. I don't mind cos I am soo chilled but sleep take a long while coming and when it does it is fragmented. I know some people sleep great but not me
