Does Tramadol mixed with alcohol greaten or lessen the chance of a seizure?

The reason being: I took 200mg of tramadol today. I have taken MUCH higher doses. I had, and am still partly experiencing a very weird episode. I felt very wierd. I was eating and my appetite went to nothing, I started sweated and I felt very out of touch and almost confused. It was hard to focus on anything. It was more then just a "daze", I cannot describe it. I am keeping myself as un-stimulated as possible.

I have no access to benzo's or much of any medication. Will a couple beers greaten or lessen the chance of a seizure b/c the GABA activity?

I do feel much better now. I feel like if I was doing anything more then sitting down trying to remain calm I definitely would have lost control and seized.

Disappointed by the lack of comments :(
BL has always done better.

It's good to hear that you're feeling better.

Tramadol and alcohol CAN cause seizures and/or slow your breathing. If you have a low tolerance for tramadol then 200 mg is pretty high if taken all at once.

Alcohol is a tricky drug because it has a very "dirty" effects profile and works with so many different receptor systems in your brain.

I can tell you that a friend of mine drank a good amount of alcohol (at least 8-10 standard drinks in a 2-3 hour time span) and had a seizure. He was coming off his lithium but the doctors told us that it was mostly the massive amount of alcohol in his system that caused him to have a seizure. Apparently withdrawaling from lithium reduces the seizure threshold, and alcohol was the trigger. Since tramadol lowers the threshold, it's possible that drinking alcohol may actually increase the chances of a seizure.

My advice is if you have to have alcohol with your tramadol, keep the doses really low.

Alcohol raises the seizure threshold when intoxicated, but causes a rebound lowering of the seizure threshold when it starts to wear off.

The weird thing is that a drink or two can help you not seize on a low dose of tramadol only because you take less tramadol (100-150mg tram) for the same narcotic effect, as ethanol is a CYP2D6 inducer (helps metabolize tram -> O-Desmethyltram).

So it seems it is possible, but mostly not.

A good understanding of all these drugs is needed (dependent on when you dosed) to properly reduce seizure threshold. Otherwise, you may accomplish the opposite. Therefore, being hard to judge over the internet. So the answer is dependent on who you are talking to.

Thanks all :)
