Opioids Tramadol 250mg and Trazodone 25-50mg? Serotonin syndrome?

I take Tramadol (250mg) and it was originally prescribed to me as a one-time thing because I broke my nose. I carefully managed it while I was in pain so I'd have a lot left over because it's my favorite type of high I've ever had, so technically I'm not supposed to be taking it anymore. Anyways, I got a new prescription for 50mg of Trazodone (but I was told to try taking 25mg first and see if that helps me sleep) today from a doctor and because I'm not supposed to be taking Tramadol, I didn't tell him I was. I was wondering if the Trazodone plus 250mg of Tramadol could cause serotonin syndrome or something. Is that safe? I'm normally really careful not to mix drugs, especially if there can be bad reactions, but I'm really wanting some Tramadol right now.

Serotonin reuptake inhibition alone cannot cause serotonin syndrome.
Both tramadol and trazodone inhibit the reuptake of serotonin.
 
^ Tramadol is actually a Serotonin Releasing Agent (SRA), weaker than MDMA but still a pretty powerful instant serotonin releaser.
 
I'm a clinical chemist. Yes. It can cause serotonin syndrome. This can kill you. Different people require more and some less according to you metabolism. So use with caution. If you have symptoms go to the ER as they have serotonin blocking agents.
 
Trazodone is a Serotonin Antagonist and Reuptake inhibitor (not to be confused with an SSRI), but regardless of the class of drug it is; there are many studies (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11111800 for example) that outline lethal combinations of trazodone and tramadol so I would stay away. Sometimes after a night of rolling (MDMA) and boozing i'll take 25mg of trazadone to come down, but like critter73 said; different people react differently so take it with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, Trazodone + Tramadol is a huge NO in my books
