I didn't realise scottish was a language. Mate the united kingdom have been speaking the english language waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy longer than the people of the united states have, and just like it the good ol' US of A there are different accents/ dialects for different areas. Unfortunately some( not all I add) americans think that they are the centre of the universe and know or care very little of any other country and cultures. I understand in your education system a lot of emphasis is put on learning your own history/cultures but very very little of the world around you. Open your mind a little, yeah I found the accent a bit hard to understand at first also, but its different and its nice to have a bit of variety in people. Think outside the square you live in to use a well worn phrase.

Haven't seen the movie, I'm more of a book person. The book was defo worthwhile but as far as I'm concerned, RARELY does a movie even come close to doing a book justice, with few exceptions. In fact, reading parts of the book got me on a bent to write a sequel to some points mentioned. The character Simon really pissed me off, so I wrote a few continuing short stories along the lines of Dave, the kid, and Simon the Hymen (my name 4 him when I explain how I pimped HIS ass out) Anyway, as for the original poster's ? re: wanting to use 10 min after putting the movie in, hell that's the most natural thing in the world. The needle in our case has very powerful pleasurable associations with visual cues. At least 4 me it does. The times I take a break from using, others can be doing it w/o me doing it, only so long as I don't SEE them doing it, but that's just my 2 cents.

Ok TRUCE people. Be nice. BTW another good thing about the book, the dialect spoken is the dialect written, but u can take more time with a book and there are a few pages translating many of the slag to ours. I always dig learning more of another dialect or language from books written about foreign countries and that consist of a whole shitload of new words be it different dialect or language. By the time I completed the book Shogun, yrs ago, I had several pages of Japanese. I wish our country taught kids several different languages as they do in Europe. I would love the ability to speak more than 2 languages, but anyhow "I was too skint to take a taxi from Mother Superior's."

I told my friend from Glasgow, I got a mental picture of some giant vegatable peeler having removed a good portion of skin from Renton's body, disabling him from taking a taxi home. He said I have a weird mind. Still I emphasized, "What is with the overutilization of the word cunt? Practically every other word out of any given conversation. LOL. Even more overused than the word fuck in the U.S. with extreme versatility.

I found the accents in both the film and the book intelligable, I'm Canadian. I'd rather the characters speak with their native accents (Scottish), it adds an extra level of depth. It may sound like they have marbles in their mouth especially Spud, but any other dialect wouldn't fit.

that all art should be rendered in cookie-cutter, easy-to-understand american accent and dialect so that it's easily spoon-fed to people like him who can't (or won't) grasp the fact that there's a whole world out there beyond the us border?

I've seen the movie three times in the last week (i rented it for a week, i was bored haha) and it gotter better with each viewing. I love the opening and closing monologues they work perfectly. The opening one with Iggy Pop playing and the closing with 'Born Slippy' playing (my current myspace song haha).

I watched it with a few friends the other day, at the end of it they had very different responses. One of my friends said, 'wow, that makes me want to stop doing drugs. Man i dont want to end up living like that'. The other friend said "i want to try Herion one day". LOL.

I was in between, it made me curious about trying it but then again it made me question wether taking drugs will lead me anywhere positive in life, considering i dont exactly have much direction yet (only being 18 yrs old).

no...the point that the scottish accent is hard to understand for some people...

...and that if the movie had less emphasis on the accent (i know...the story would be completely different if it was set anywhere else) it would be alot more accessible to the general public
