A SCHOOLBOY who died after consuming ecstasy and cocaine at an illegal rave in Northampton was "force-fed" the drugs which led to his death, an inquest has heard.
Miles Shanks, 15, choked to death while suffering the toxic effects of the class A drugs during a party at a disused warehouse in Nunn Mills Road in June 2006.

He was found face down on the ground by an ambulance worker, who estimated the youngster's heart had stopped beating 15 minutes before his arrival.

Alan Barham, an emergency medical technician based at the town's Mereway ambulance station, yesterday described to an inquest at Kettering Magistrates' Court the events leading up to the discovery of Miles's body.

He said: "I was met by a lad at the bottom end (of the site] and he said there was a lad at the top believed to be fitting.

"He led the way up, which was some considerable distance. When I arrived, I saw a lad face down by some derelict buildings.

"I turned him on to his back and could see he was in obvious cardiac arrest."

Mr Barham checked for signs of life, but found none. He said no one had attempted to resuscitate the Mereway Community College pupil for about 15 minutes.

"I thought there was absolutely no chance of resuscitating him and I declared him to be dead," he said.

"I was told he had been force fed drugs by various people. When I arrived, he was on his own, face down and there was no-one else around."

A year after Miles's death, a teenage boy, who had taken him to the party and g
iven him two ecstasy tablets, was sentenced to 12 months in youth custody for supplying the drugs.

A courtorder prevents the Chronicle & Echo and other media from revealing the Northampton youth's identity.

But the 17-year-old, who has since been released from custody, rejected suggestions he had forced drugs on Miles.

"I would never have done that," he told the inquest. "I wouldn't have forced anyone to take drugs."

Coroner Anne Pember said a post mortem examination had revealed Miles had died from choking after taking a "large dose" of ecstasy, as well as some cocaine.

She recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Speaking after yesterday's hearing, the youngster's father, Robert Shanks, said he was surprised at her decision.

He added: "It is not what we were expecting. I can't understand how it could be accidental, if he was supplied with the drugs that killed him."

They're really going to great lengths to remove the "free will" component from drug-taking activities, aren't they?

I wish somebody would force feed me drugs. Just like that shit they tell you in school, about the guy that is going to be waiting for you when you are walking home from school. He is the one who is going to give you drugs so that you get hooked. I always looked for him, but to this day haven't found him.

right??!?

and how would you force someone to do coke...? an explaination or example would do just fine...

Maybe I'm missing something, but this kid died from choking on the E? I tried calling the hospital, but they wouldn't give me any information. I'll try the coroner tommorow.

The lady I talked to kind of hinted that he actually choked on the E, but the way she said it, I can't tell for sure. Plus the accent...

It sounds like he literally had drugs shoved down his throat. That's what seems odd about this.

I don't see how a 15 year old could choke to death on a tablet...

I'm guessing that the kid went into a fit, maybe due to the over-stimulation from the coke and E, swallowed his tongue and died.

Also a tiny chance that he was actually epileptic and the lights at the rave had given him a seizure?

"It is not what we were expecting. I can't understand how it could be accidental, if he was supplied with the drugs that killed him."

Seems like some disgruntled parents are trying to make someone suffer for their sons’ death.
I just can’t really see someone forcing the kid to eat ecstasy and do lines of coke all night at a rave.
Did he force him to dance and talk to girls also?

swallowed his tongue and died.

he was found face down. It's impossible to actually "swallow" your tongue, but if you're on your back and unconscious (apparently a special kind of unconsciousness is needed, because sleep doesn't work), and the muscles relax, the tongue can fall backwards and occlude the airway.

Knowing how seizures work, that's extremely unlikely to happen- if not impossible. Seizures tense the muscles, they don't suddenly relax them all, and this requires a profound state of muscle relaxation.

Were they... in a plastic bag?:\ I guess it's England so it isn't impossible he got a hold of a hundred pills or so and tried to swallow them all at once without chewing.

Sorry bulldog, that man is about as real as Santa.:(

perhaps he asphyxiated on vomit while unconscious? that was the first thing that came to mind when i read the story, but they said he was found face down....maybe somebody moved him?

There are so many things wrong with this story I don't know where to begin...

What does force-fed drugs mean? Someone held him down while another person literally shoved pills down his throat and cocaine up his nose?

What did he choke to death on? The pills? Vomit? Something else?

Doesn't cardiac arrest mean heart attack? Don't you experience death by asphyxiation when you choke? So which one was it?

They said he died after taking a "large dose of ecstasy" after taking 2 pills? How much E do 2 pills contain? In my understanding, if you're lucky, it's 100-150mg (tops!) per pill. 300mg isn't that much. Maybe it is for a first timer, but shit, I know people who take that much just to warm up...

And were the pills tested to make sure they contained nothing but MDMA? I mean, why blame E when it could have been meth? That's bad journalism, IMO.

Damn, I could go on and on.

It's a real shame about this kid, though. I hope his parents do some research and get toxicology reports done. All in all, it sucks. RIP, kid. Not many of us die being 'force fed' such euphoric substances...

Meh, I tried calling them yesterday and I got nothing. No idea.

Why did you actually take the time to bother? It seems like such an unusual thing to do, why precisely do you care?

That seems like such a News Corp. kinda story. Force-fed? I fucking doubt it. a) Why would anybody want to force the drugs they've paid for on somebody else if they don't want it? b) Why was this kid at this rave in the first place?

Such bullshit.

I don't know actually. This story sounds so strange. They're alleging that people actually were shoving valuable drugs down the face of someone who didn't want them.

It doesn't make any sense- but then again, nothing else in the story did- from the way the kid was found, what they said he died of, how he supposedly took the drugs, the 'fact' that a bunch of people would have to have given away- no, forced on someone- 100+ dollars worth of pills, it doesn't make sense.

But then, the way they found him made it look like what they're saying actually true.

So on one hand, it sounds like they're being honest, but on the other, I just can't imagine such a thing happening.

I dunno. It sounds totally retarded, but then again, the evidence they cite makes it sound like it actually did happen.

hard to say without some sort of update.

"It is not what we were expecting. I can't understand how it could be accidental, if he was supplied with the drugs that killed him."

How about he bought the drugs and overdosed on them. That counts as accidental overdose unless he actually tried to kill himself then it would be suicide.

Nobody is gonna shove drugs down somebodies throat thats just complete bullshit. I wish somebody would force feed me drugs preferably injectable ampules of morphine or dilaudid.

Everything about this story is bogus nobody gives away drugs that cost alot of money and how the hell can you force somebody to snort coke?

Pills are cheap in the uk, 2 probably cost £5 or less. Still im sure he took them himself. I think its possible he could have had a seizure from that, especially at a rave. Whats really sad is that it seems nobody tried to help him, surely enough people know basic first aid to be able to keep him alive till the paramedic arrived.
