The Naval Academy faced a much larger drug problem - much of it involving the use of synthetic marijuana called "spice" - than it publicly admitted last year.
Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by The Capital revealed the extent of that drug problem. There was drug dealing by midshipmen and a much larger number of users than previously disclosed, the documents indicated.
Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents also found some mids had used cocaine, mephedrone and psychedelic mushrooms, and had soda bottles with secret compartments for hiding drugs, and fake bladders - called “Whizzinators” - that could be used to avoid detection in drug tests.
Mids questioned by officials and The Capital estimated that hundreds were using spice, saying that the academy failed to stress that the drug, which was still legal in the civilian world, was banned in the military.
