diversification for the win.

Indeed. I had to do a double-take. :)

Idiosyncratic not just to me but also my current whims:

Skinny Puppy - Last Rights
Speedy J - A Shocking Hobby
Autechre - [untitled] (aka LP5)
Isis - Oceanic
Meshuggah - Catch-33 (okay...the amazing finale skews this...could've been "Destroy, Erase, Improve")
Tool - Lateralus
Radiohead - OK Computer
Download - The Eyes of Stanley Pain
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Meat Beat Manifesto - Actual Sounds and Voices

Venetian Snares – Rossz Csillag Alatt Született

God did I want to put this on there...I noticed just how ridiculous this task was around item 6.

ebola

One thing that bothers me, (and this isn't directed at anyone here), is how a lot of people consider the different genres of music to be Jazz, Blues, Rock, Country, Classical, Hip Hop, Electronic, World Music and don't distinguish between the different musical styles in each wide category.

For example, at first glance a lot of people would dismiss my list as just mostly classic rock. But that's looking at it simply from the perspective of 2009. I think my list is extremely diverse. Each of the groups I have listed are drastically different than each other even if most fall under the category of classic rock.

I would consider Steely Dan to be as far apart from Neil Young as they are from The Roots or Boards of Canada.

#1 Lateralus - Tool
#2 Ænima - Tool
#3 Mer De Noms - A Perfect Circle
#4 Half A World Away- Ogsy
#5 Welcome to Sky Valley- Kyuss
#6 The Downward Spiral- Nine Inch Nails
#7 S&M- Metallica
#8 Superunknown- Sound Garden
#9 Wish You Were Here- Pink Floyd
#10 Dirt- Alice in Chains

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel bad for having two tool albums on there... I almost put three (hard to decide between Undertow and 10,000 days.). I also nearly put another Nine Inch Nails album in there (Ghosts). Rodrigo y Gabriela deserves an honorable mention, as they managed to make my favorites, and are kinda way out of my normal genres.

Someone (aka not me) should make an excel list, and give us the *real* bluelight top 10 list. Actually, it would be cool to see the percentages of the favorite albums here.

I just had a dream last night, and In Rainbows was far better in my imagination. Either Radiohead has exceeded my expectations in reality, or I need to get cacking myself. (personally, I am a big Radiohead fan).

I'll make it MY top ten of all time, and even at that I'm going to take some liberties.

In no special order:

Aja - Steely Dan

This really does qualify on all levels. Every song is drop dead good. It hangs together well as an album. The cover looks good. The musicianship is first rate. It was genre bending at the time. AND, I still play it lots.

Winged Serpent (Sliding Quadrants) - Cecil Taylor

This is free jazz. For anyone who actually know who this guy is and has heard some of his stuff, this is the shit. There are about a dozen musicians playing on this and they're all going at the same time in different directions.

The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner - Ben Folds Five

I read where this was actually one long thing to begin with, until Ben Folds broke it up into pieces (songs).

Close to the Edge - Yes

Three songs. An epic album. Hard to choose among the Yes albums, but this one has the fewest rough spots.

Red - King Crimson

I don't know of anything else that sounds quite like this. Something for everyone here.

Jimmy (Smith) and Wes (Montgomery) - The Dynamic Duo

An oddball on a top ten list. Organ player Smith and guitar player Montgomery were great as individual players and this came together really nicely. Just easy to listen to.

Secret Story - Pat Metheny

I might have a different choice for PM if I'd heard more of his jazz stuff, but as a long album this works really well. Lots of moods and different types of playing.

11 Tracks of Whack- Walter Becker

His first solo album outside of Steely Dan (1994). Utterly personal songs that don't always make for a good 'album.' But as a collection of songs they show what he's capable of and a lot of it is pretty far out. Some of THE best music I've ever heard while high because it reveals itself in a different way. All music sounds better high, but this is something different again for me.

Fiddler on the Roof/Oliver/West Side Story - Soundtracks

A mess of clever songs from these three shows.

Talking Book - Stevie Wonder

I went years without actually owning this. When I got it and played it through I understood what the fuss was about. Afficionados might prefer something else, but the album cuts here are really good.

1) Makaveli - The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory
2)Eminem - Relapse

Eminem - The Eminem Show
Nas - Illmatic
Nirvana - Nevermind
DMX - It's Dark & Hell Is Hot
DMX - Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood
Dr. Dre - 2001
Tech N9ne - Everready: The Religion
Warren G - Regulate: The G Funk Era

Damn, it must have been really fucking good then. In Rainbows is my favorite Radiohead release. I have a feeling its reputation will grow to rival OK Computer and The Bends.

Yeah in rainbows is like a slightly more "sober"radiohead album than ok computer/amnesiac/kid a. I love it for what it is but some people didn't like the short length and lack of exploration(well for a radiohead album).

i can listen to endlessly..

Demon Days - Gorillaz
Revolver - Beatles
Waiter You Vultures - Portugal. The Man
Kezia - Protest the Hero
XO - Elliott Smith
Into the Valley of Death - Death by Stereo
13 Songs - Fugazi
Undoing Ruin - Darkest Hour
Fuck World Trade - Leftover Crack
Self Titled - I am the Avalanche

The list is rapidly evolving, but for now, in order:

1. Pink Floyd-DSOTM
2. Tool- Aenima
3. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- Howl
4. The Mars Volta- Frances the Mute
5. Bjork- Vespertine
6. Radiohead- Kid A
7. Jeremy Enigk- Return of the Frog Queen
8. Nirvana- Unplugged
9. Lauryn Hill- The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
10. Beruit- The Flying Club Cup

Honorable Mention:

11. Kyuss- Welcome to Sky Valley
12. Sunny Day Real Estate- How it Feels to be Something On
13. Mastodon- Remission
14. NIN- The Downward Spiral
15. Arcade Fire- Neon Bible

Those in the honorable mention category were strong contenders, but there were plenty of others that I didn't want to clutter the list with, such as multiple albums from the same band (Sunny Day excluded).

8. Nirvana- Unplugged
9. Lauryn Hill- The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Definite classics, for sure.

A couple I forgot to mention:

- Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle (replace one of the DMX albums and that's definitely in my top 10)
- Dr. Dre - The Chronic (I prefer 'Doggystyle' over it, but that's easily an honorable mention, if not in the actual top 10)
- Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang: The 36 Chambers (easily an honorable mention...I'm sure most hip-hop heads got that in their top 10)
