Too much acetaminophen + codeine combo makes my ears sensitive?

I had to take 6 yesterday for this nasty headache.

When I woke up this morning it felt like the muscles in my inner ear were vibrating, or were about to vibrate involuntarily consistently.

I've read acetaminophen can inhibit an anti-oxidant responsible for keeping the ears healthy (n-acetylcysteine).

Some journals allude to long term use of acetaminophen as possible causing sudden hearing loss (in formulations such as solpedeine also).

Any experiences/insights on this?

It's more usual aspirin whose toxicity can produce ringing in the ears and so on.

I believe methionine is preferred for the treatment of paracetamol poisoning but N-acetylcytenine is also used.

But unless you are consuming a lot, it shouldn't be an issue.

Doesn't Solpedeine also contain codeine phosphate? So you might want to wonder if that may be a cause.

There are some papers suggesting it can be linked to hearing loss.

The sensitivity has eased a little since yesterday (thank goodness), but now I don't think I ever want to use solpedeine again, even though I get insane headaches.

Maybe vimovo or something could work instead, but aspirin or acetaminophen by itself are almost useless compared to solpedeine for exhaustion headaches, which I get.

Studies on acetaminophen suggest even within clinical guidelines, over a sustained time period they may be ototoxic.

Have you ever experienced this with other opioids?

Some opioids, particularly the stronger kratom derivatives, give me auditory sensitivity and twitching in my inner ear muscles similar to what you describe.

Now that I think about it... the days it was the worst I may have also been taking acetaminophen, but can't really remember, yet it definitely happens without acetaminophen too.

twitching in my inner ear muscles

Yes, this exactly.

I haven't used other opioids so can't compare but I've experimented by having days with versus without solpedeine, and it's definitely precipitated by it.

But only over the last month or so.

I've been using solpedeine at clinical doses for years and this is new. Some of the papers state that auditory issue do come about with chronic use.

That paper considers chronic explsure to some [P] and [POM] analgesics and anti-inflamatory medicines. They appear to be considering only people who were consuming the given medicine at lest 2/3 days per week over months and even years.

It's a meta-analysis - THAT'S GOOD!
The data analaysis seems to rely on self-reporting of hearing-loss - THAT'S BAD
It is a very large study - THAT'S GOOD!
The associaion between paracetamol and hearing loss fails to exclude other factors - THAT'S BAD

It appears to be research carried out by medical doctors...

THAT'S BAD

The last is just an observation and I am sure is a bias within me. But I can point to the ten worst academic papers I've read, and doctors who presume they are naturally good at research often aren't. Cerainly it was published in a rather niche and therefore likely a low impact journal.

I always think of my ears before I stick anything in my mouth or lungs or even eyes (in eye drops - some super high-strength ones contain neomycin and other SERIOUSLY ototoxic antibiotic agents that can MASSIVELY fuck up your hearing).

That includes any drug, food, or beverage. I have found that the things that increase the problems with ears are: Too much salt, excessive caffeine, excessive sugar, any alcohol, cheese - especially aged or soft cheeses, red wine, dark chocolate, cannabis, barbiturates, carbamazepine (which helps with nerve pain - at the cost of potential hearing loss over time), valproate, opiates especially ones with NE/SERT effects like oxycodone, tapentadol, tramadol, paracetamol, ibuprofen.

The reason for the risk with NSAIDS is due to their affects on antioxidants but also due to microembolism. People who take lots of panadol or similar drugs run the risk of microgranulation due to the inhibition of the effects of magnesium and glycine within the lining of the tiny little arteries that cause "shedding". This can lead to these tiny things that can seriously mess up your ears, cause tinnitus, and all sorts of other nasty shit. You DO NOT WANT any of it.

If you are going to consume any of this shit, please see your GP or a decent doctor, and secure a couple of bottles of prednisone, preferrably the high dose one. Also, do this if you're planning on any vaccinations, especially COVID or Influenza/Shingles ones. Always have steroids on hand because it's like the mobile RBT - you won't know where, you won't know when. You'll get pulled over by a sudden change/noise, whatever, and that'll be it - you treat it now or you are potentially fucked forever. I have Menieres and am planning to communicate with Dignitas if it continues to get worse and I assume it will, right or wrong, but I will cross that bridge when I get to it. It's my body and I'm the sole triage over what happens to it - and that includes self-destruction or whatever it be.

Dana White the UFC president had terrible Meniere's and got massive relief from either stem cell injections, or one of those blood spinning treatments.

I once severely damaged my hearing when I was smoking subutex. It totally fucked my hearing but I just kept smoking. It’s like what I could audibly hear had dropped a whole octave and my own voice sounded pitch modulated. I think I might have fried, temporarily the little hairs that vibrate the higher frequency sounds or maybe slightly anesthetized my ear drums because the bupe smoke might have gotten into my ears.

Whatever. Don’t smoke bupe or subs or anything unless you want instant deaf.

Smoker beware! Seriously just don’t smoke bupe at all in any way shape or form. The damage to my hearing was almost immediate from the first session. It’s fucked.
