Sorry in advance cause this is a bit gross.

Anyone deal with these bastards? I've never had tonsilitis before, but occasionally my throat will feel really itchy (like an allergy type feeling) and I'll relieve it by "hissing" (hard to describe but hopefully you know what I mean). Sometimes I'll hack up these small off-white masses of what I assume to be calcified bacteria that smell terrible. For the record I have generally good oral hygiene and everything, just a history of allergies. It's slightly off-putting and also satisfying in a weird way. I'm not sure how to prevent these besides getting my tonsils removed.

I don't think there is really any way to eliminate them altogether. I think actual problems of them causing bad breath that anyone will notice only is going to occur in a case where you let them build up to massive proportions. Personally, I just once a week or so just take the plastic case of a pen and stick a q-tip in it so you have some reach and just shine a flashlight in my mouth in front of the mirror and I can pull out any that are visible and it's pretty simple. I've read that some people use those water jet flossers on a low setting and just stick it in there and spray it and it will wash them out.

I think just the individual shape of a persons tonsils will dictate how much of an issue it is. Me personally, I find my right tonsil always gets them building up but the left one very little.

I haven't ever noticed any kind of feeling from them. And I never even knew what they were until a couple years ago I saw some video on youtube and then looked in the mirror and was kind of grossed out. So they were surely there the first 25 years or my life and I got by ok.

So yeah it's gross but anyone who has tonsils has them so I don't think it's that much of a thing to worry about.

In eastern medicine we call these damp-phlegm nodules. If there is a sore throat then they are damp-phlegm-heat nodules.

We use astringent herbs that enter the stomach and lungs to address these, and herbs that clear phlegm. According to this theory, if you eat a lot of phlegm forming foods like dairy, greasy food, sweet or overly salty food, you will retain more dampness and phlegm in the stomach and lungs. It could also be a result of chronic illness in the lungs. If you have a lot of lung phlegm then this is a sign.

A friend of mine used to get these all the time and it turned out that her stomach acid was out of control due to a faulty esophageal sphincter, and at night when she slept it was mildly scorching her throat, leading to these pieces of rotten tissue coming out. That was before I knew the eastern medicine explanation though.

No idea where you live, but the Chinese herbal formula for clearing phlegm is called Er Chen Tang. I've personally taken it before and it works well. If you live near a Chinatown I recommend going into an herb store and checking it out.

I've also read that lack of iodine in the diet can contribute to this problem, and the best way to address this is to eat sea plants like kelp and seaweed. Its particular iodine compounds soften nodules and clear away toxicity in the soft tissues. Nodules and calcifications are definitely a sign that your body is not clearing things out properly.

I've had tonsillitis like 15 times over the last two years (and only since finishing college has it gone away, which makes me believe I was getting it from someone there) and every time I notice those white things is just before I get a really sore throat and flu symptoms that come with tonsillitis. My doctor said that the dots are the manifestation of the bacterial infection of the disease, so I would get it checked out it I were you. A week or so of anti-biotics clears it up, but if it's recurring then you should probably look at some alternative methods, coz you don't want that nasty bacteria building up in your mouth and potentially passing it to others.

i get them. Use a mini trampoline and they are gone within 2 days. Your tonsils are part of your lymphatic system and the trampoline will open up all the valves and help clear you out. If you are eating dairy like milk, yogurt, or ice cream late at night you can get them really fast. I promise you a mini trampoline(rebounder) will clean your tonsils out within couple days. Search google for tonsil stones and mini trampoline. They are 30 bucks at wall mart or a sporting goods store.

Do not have your tonsils removed they are an important part of your bodies defense against foreign things and bacteria. Milk and other dairy stuff at bed time is probably a main factor. It calcifies inside the grooves of your tonsils and starts to smell.

I used to get them bad. Got some big ones out. Smelled like bad poop. Milk is a culprit.
