I am thinknig of ativan&xanax, is it worth taking different types of benzos together, or am I better off taking just one and a higher dose? I want to fall asleep and get up in six hours, so maybe a couple mg xanax but any thoughts are appreciated

Don't mix them. If you have to get up in 6 hours then take a little bit of alprazolam, it's got a shorter half-life so it will be easier to wake up in the morning.

I couldn't have said it any better then tri did. If I take small doses for sleep, I usually take it like 30-45 minutes before bed. Doiing it that way always gave me the best results. But remember, OP, a milligram or two too much, could potentially turn that six hours of sleep into 12 hours of sleep. So just be careful, man...

It's my experience that mixing benzodiazepine's is not only a bad idea due to the risks of blacking out, but also because it usually just muddles the buzz. I even feel like clonazepam will cancel out alprazolam if taken at the same time, just leaving me with a heavy, boring feeling of sedation.

For the highly benzodiazepine tolerant, I maintain that you will probably not blackout. In those cases, mixing Alprazolam and Lorazepam can ease anxiety, or actually make you feel a sedated, as opposed to merely feeling normal. In your case, I feel that if you have to ask, you know that your tolerance is not that high. In that case, I recommend sticking to one substance. Alprazolam is superior for euphoria, but Lorazepam is superior for sleep. Proceed with caution![/FONT]

At lowish doses and/or benzos with similar effect profiles, it is unlikely that you would notice that instead of 2mg alprazolam you've taken 1.5mg and 1mg lorazepam. As doses increase all benzos begin to become anxiolytic, sedative, and amnesic, so if you think it through I think in certain situations combining benzos is beneficial.

For instance, mixing alprazolam and lorazepam as the starter suggested sounds like something I might do for a stimulant comedown. Alprazolam is superior in anxiolytic strength so I'd take mostly that, but a bit of lorazepam for increased hypnotic effects and a longer duration to help me sleep later, as alprazolam wears off quickly. Really, for me, augmenting and finetuning your doses like this is the only real use for mixing benzos; they are interchangeable to a certain extent, but sometimes you need a longer duration (or a smooth comedown instead of coming off a big Xanax dose at once), or to add a benzo with muscle relaxant properties to otherwise mainly anxiolytic benzos.

This kind of tinkering implies knowledge and experience, so if you need to ask I would advise against it for the moment. The differences are subtle, anyway, so it's more likely you'll end up with a blackout.
