Today in History

(For yesterday) April 5th 1994, Kurt Cobain takes his own life. Wow, 20 years already.

On April 6th, 1896, the first modern Olympic games were opened in Athens, Greece. Of the 11 countries participating, Greece cut through them all winning a total of 46 medals. The US came in 2nd winning 20 medals in total.

Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) also died on April 5th, but in 2002 of a drug overdose.

Today in history (1948 ): The World Health Organization was founded.

Do you think they'll ever get involved in harm reduction?

^There might be a possibility but not anytime soon... I think that some people are starting to have an open mind about drug use, but majority are still closed minded about drug use and harm reduction.

Also today in history:

1923 -1st brain tumor operation under local anesthetic

1934 - In India, Mahatma Gandhi suspended his campaign of civil disobedience

1943 - Adolf Hitler & Benito Mussolini met for an Axis conference in Salzburg

What are your guy's opinion on Hitler's rise to power?

^I think the failure of the communist revolution in Germany after WWI pretty much caused a reactionary wave of nationalism and fear. Had the communists succeeded, especially in Germany, I think we would have a very different history and perception of 20th century communism. The Nazis never would have taken power, the Soviet Union wouldn't have been the monolith communist power and socialist states would have had a very advanced, industrial western nation to help them. I think it would have saved many millions of lives both from the Nazis and from the Soviets and would have avoided WWII all together.

On April 8th, 1513, Ponce De Leon claimed Florida for Spain.

The very last assembly of the League of Nations was held in 1946.

And in 1973, Pablo Picasso died at age 91.

Hitler rose to power feeding off of people's fears and need to blame someone else for their problems. If I remember correctly, there was massive unemployment and people wanted a solution. It's too bad the price that was paid.

^Yep..probably going out to get some bread here.

I have asked around regarding Hitler's real agenda behind killing millions of Jewish people, you seem to know the political reasons so could you also state here what was that reason?

Also today in history:

1959 - Japan's Crown Prince Akihito marries commoner Michiko Shoda

1790 - Robert Gray is 1st American to circumnavigate the Earth

1710 - The first law regulating copyright is issued in Great Britain.

I think he was elected for economic and other social reasons, like was the case in other fascist areas of Europe (Spain, Italy, Hungary etc). Surely he wasn't elected to wipe out an entire race of people, even though citizens might have eventually come to terms with this later on. Hitler got his people to rally behind the idea that jews were non-German non-Aryan controllers of society who needed to be eliminated, which also played on the fear of communism as many saw it as a jewish conspiracy at the time.

On April 10th 1865, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

The Titanic left Southampton, England to embark on its journey to America in 1912.

In 1919, Mexican revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata is ambushed and killed by Mexican military forces.

And on April 10th, 1970, Paul McCartney officially announces the breakup of the Beatles

I have also read and have also been told that Hitler hated the Jewish people because they were also controlling businesses, is there truth behind this reason?

^I don't know if there's truth to that, but all kinds of excuses were used to justify The Holocaust.

I do apologize to everyone for missing a few days on this thread. I've been busy the past few days.

Today in history (1598): The Edict of Nantes allowed the Huguenots in France freedom of religion.

How important is freedom of religion to you?

^It is very important, I can't imagine being executed because I am a Muslim or a Christian or a Buddhist. I think that everyone should have the liberty to choose what religion suits their beliefs and be able to practice it without having the fear of persecution or humiliation.

Also today in history:

837 - Best view of Halley's Comet in 2000 years

1957 - 11th NBA Championship: Bost Celtics beat St Louis Hawks, 4 games to 3

1934 - 4.7 million US families report receiving welfare payments

What are your opinions on US welfare in present time?

It's easier said than done, but finding a way to reduce the number of people who abuse it would be great. Nothing against those who really need it, but there's many who are able to work and choose not to. I also see people who actually need it and get denied.

I think that the states should open back up a public works project.. we have plenty of work that needs to get done and allot of people who want to work. I think welfare is needed but there are some real lazy ass people who just expect everything to be handed to them..

It makes me kinda sick when I see a 290 pound pregnant woman, her 400 pound husband, with four kids paying for three carts stacked to the ceiling with absolute garbage processed food. Paying with a quest card, while talking to her husband about how they need to stop and get her xanax and oxy, and then they can stop by the liquor store. The government is also paying for those medictions.

I do not know their exact situation.. but I will go out on a limb and guess that the both of them are on disabilty for some bulshit. Probably something to do with their absolutely disgusting weight. which likely is the result of them being lazy as a life sentence is long.. combining with how they shovel in processed garbage, with what must be with a front end loader. While sitting around getting high of free drugs provided by the government while drinking and watching satellite TV that they pay for by selling the free drugs they are provided. Thier children were all disgustingly over weight as well and it took no great leap of deduction to figure that there is very likely they will be just like their parents. Pathetic government freeloaders. The whole family smelled. They kinda looked like cave trolls.

The welfare system is just and needed, but their is a whole group of the lowest rung of society who never contribute, lazy, uneducated, freeloaders who have made living of the government and Popping out as many lazy, uneducated, future living off the government, mini thems as they can, their professions. Reverse evolution at its finest.

I have no idea how to kick them off.

The number of adults, ages 18 to 65, on the federal disability rolls due to mental illness jumped from 1.25 million in 1987 to four million in 2007. Roughly one in every 45 working-age adults is now on government disability due to mental illness.

Some of these may be legit, but whole bunch are likely bullshit. Seems like everyone these days has Bipolar to such a level they can't work.

^U.S. government should be stricter with handing down welfare. A lot of people are getting away with getting money from the government with some lazy excuse. There are some like that here in Canada too, but I don't think there's a lot as far as I know. I can imagine how the hard working citizens feel for working their asses off and then their money are just going to be used by these abusive people.

Today in history:

1841 - Edgar Allen Poe's "Murders in the Rue Morgue" published

1945 - US forces conquered Motobu peninsula on Okinawa

1799 - Napoleon called for establishing Jerusalem for Jews

What can you say about Napoleon's leadership? Do you like him as a leader? Why or why not?

An ideal solution would be to drastically raise the minimum wage, rendering welfare a less attractive option for those who are using the system as an alternative to low-paying jobs. The minimum wage here in the US has been raised twice in the last 15 years, not nearly enough to account for inflation and rising living costs. Even median household purchasing power peaked in 1968 and has actually been declining for decades. Deincentivize welfare benefits by incentivizing employment imo. These new workers with extra income will provide new tax revenue and will open all kinds of doors to economic stability.

On April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank off the coast of North America.

Jackie Robinson made his historical major league baseball debut in 1947.

Cambodian dictator and genocidal mastermind Pol Pot died in 1998.

And one year ago today, the Boston Marathon was the target of the now infamous Boston Bombing.

Lol Maya, we call (amongst ourselves) one of the supervisors at work "Napoleon" because he's a jerk. I guess that answers your question of my opinion of Napoleon! :)

I'm not calling you a republican however this type of rhetoric tends to spill out of conservative mouths. Watch any Faux News lately? What you may not know is that many states, such as the one I live in, only allow an unemployed person to draw foodstamps for 3 months. Of course, I live in a fascist red state so I don't know how other states' welfare systems work. We don't have welfare; it's either foodstamps or nothing.

I think it really is sad how many Americans are so self-absorbed. They'll bow to pray to a merciful god on Sunday and then on Monday morning, damn all the poor folks to hell. Yes there are a few bad apples who abuse the welfare system. There are just as many rich bad apples on Wall Street and in big corporations that prey off hard working people like you and me.

Today in history.....April 15 was tax day.

^definitely not conservative here yes I used to go to church on sundays but it's been like years. I don't condemn the people but their actions.

Might be trying to get forgiveness for all the awful things they do and are a part of. Religion is a scam and people use it to scam themselves as well. "Im a good church going person", like attending church automatically makes you anything of the sort. I can do anything I want as long as i accept jesus as my savior and all your sins will be forgiven, how convenient. If we tried to add up all the awfulness that has been done in the name of a god the list would be infinite and still growing.
