This is a public service announcement. To all those who study in Barnes N Nobles: What the fuck are you doing?

Does your college/university not have a library? Moreover, are you fucking retarded?

I'm walking around B & N the other day, after a good bro-out session/lunch at apple bees (gotta take a study break sometime, right?) and we're walking around B & N and some other shops doing some Christmas shopping and I walk by this girl looking at flash cards for some nursing or anatomy class and I did a double take. Excuse me, miss, do you know where the librarian's desk is? I noticed you were studying and I thought for a second we were in a library, but then I realized we were in fucking BARNES N NOBLE, you cocksucker. So why are you studying in a book store?!

So what's the deal with these pseudo-intellectuals? Do you like studying in a busy public place? Do you feel the need to let everyone around you know how studious and intellectual you are? Are you too good for the quiet floor of your school's library? Do you enjoying being raped by starbucks for the price of a cup of coffee? 'Cuz in the basement of the library where I'm at it's 50 cents for the first cup and free refills after that. Shit, sometimes during finals week they give that shit away for free.

I hope none of you all associate with these douche bags. And for those who still have finals/papers to do, Good luck.

I don't understand studying outside of your home. There are several libraries on my campus, and they are all glorified study halls.

Go home, change into something relaxing, make yourself a pot of tea, throw on some chill music and crack open the books.

If you say so. Personally, I find it more effective to study when I'm relaxed and able to focus. My cat will come lay down beside me, and she's like a big, fuzzy stress ball.

The only downside is that I tend to glaze over and fall asleep sometimes.. heh. But as long as I leave myself enough time before an exam to allow for sudden, narcoleptic naps, then this method is surprisingly effective. Creature comforts I suppose.

I think the idea behind the "studying in different environments" is the following:

All of our actions, including studying, have a context. We may be in a library, at home, in a B&N wondering why the hell that guy with the Applebee's buffalo-sauce smeared across his shirt is casting baleful glares at us.

We perceive these things as we remember, and when we recall the memory of what we were studying, we may also recall a portion of where we were when we learned what we were studying.

By studying in different environments, you develop a richer range of contexts associated with the study material, and may make the memories - you still have to do the hard work of forming them - easier to access and more resilient.

That said, while it's probably nice in some ways to study at a BN, unless it's very quiet or you have truly excellent concentration, all the distractions will interfere with the studying.

Well really you should study in the classroom you will be taking test in :) that way you are trying to recall the info in the same exact context as you studied

But anyway, I like studying at home more than anything. I like to be at my absolute highest level of comfort to take in information.

I study better in places outside my home. I tend to get distracted by porn, FlickR, BL, etc... so studying somewhere where I can't whip my dick out is necessary.

I also happened to spend almost the entirety of last summer at Barnes and Noble. I was mostly reading, doing a little studying; and, even at a busy location (at Johns Hopkins University), the noise was never a problem. I found that, with little else to motivate me, just getting dressed and going out in public helped get me going. Might sound pathetic, but when you've got a lot of free-time, the little things matter.

^I can see that. "going out" always makes one feel better about themselves.
You always want to have some sort of objective when you are "going out," whether it's sex, banking, working, buying pot, or studying.
You always feel more productive when you put on a different shirt than the one you slept in and actually do something.

Hogen, a Chinese Zen teacher, lived alone in a small temple
in the country. One day four traveling monks appeared and asked
if they might make a fire in his yard to warm themselves.

While they were building the fire, Hogen heard them arguing
about subjectivity and objectivity. He joined them and said:
"There is a big stone. Do you consider it to be inside or
outside your mind?"

One of the monks replied: "From the Buddhist viewpoint
everything is an objectification of mind, so I would say that
the stone is inside my mind."

"Your head must feel very heavy," observed Hogen,
"if you are carrying around a stone like that in your mind."

I can see why someone would want to, but it annoys the shit out of me when im a paying customer trying to find a spot to sit so I can preview a litttle of the book im going to buy and there is not one damn place to sit.

although when your studying a shitload you start to feel like your room is a prison cell, so being out in public can make the expereince a lot more enjoyable.

hmmm solution, B & N needs more chairs
