Time for a new doctor?

If you've read my other posts (hydrocodone tolerance) and (is this normal) you know my doctor is a little wacked. If not basically the scenario is Im on hydrocodone 10/325 9 times a day for chronic back pain. I've had problems with my doctor working with me on my dose. I feel I need a long acting narcotic he is terrified to give me one. Many of you have suggested I find another doctor and now that point has comin bc at my last appt my doc said he woul not be writing any more scripts for me until he talks to my parents? He wants them to be aware of the dangers of the medicine. I am 19 I do not even live with my parents but I am more than capable of explaining the dangers to them since my doctor is physco and is basically going to try to convice them to say that don't want me taking it. Which won't be hard bc my parents don't like the narcotics but they do not understand my pain and have never suffered long term pain like i am. So my question is if I were to go to another doctor with my X-rays ct scans and my physical therapy treatment and everything else that I tried before opioid therapy, would I have problems with getting my medicine. Would I have a chance to try a long acting opioid or not? Or even worse would a new doctor prescribe an even weaker/smaller dose? What's your experience with switching doctors?

I had a similar situation, albeit I'm 20 and this was with benzos as oppose to opiates. However, when I switched doctors and complained about the last one I was seeing for the same reasons you're talking about he might as well have given me his script pad. This isn't the case for everyone, but it's my experience. I would suggest a new doctor if he sounds too paranoid to help someone who is in agonizing pain. I just wish docs weren't treated like drug dealers these days.

Good luck,
MF4M

(Note: when I switched doctors I had a massive panic attack right in his office, so he's seen the worst of it; if you have any proof of why you're back is in pain get it faxed over to the new doc)

How long have you been in pain for? What is the diagnosis? How long have you been using opiates?

At my last consult with my pain mgt dr, we discussed increasing my long acting opiate over my short acting. This makes sense of course, but he spoke of several of his patients ODing on long acting meds as they were taking more than prescribed, not realising they take a little time to wrk, could this be what ur dr might be concerned about?

I am a little worried to switch docs bc after several months of failed treatments he was the first doctor to actually give me medicine in case treatments didn't work. An I went from 6 tramadol a day to 9 hydrocodone 10/325 a day in about 3 months. He's blown away by my tolerance building so quick but wasn't my tolerance it was the fact that the weaker doses didn't control the pain. I've been on hydrocodoe (starting at 5/325) for about 9 months now. I have mayofascial problems and 2 herniated discs (c-5 an c-6 I Beleive) and I can understand his concern an he has had 2 patients die this year from long acting meds but my appt are 2 weeks apart so there's closer monitoring and I've passed all 3 drug screens I've had.

You need a new doctor OP.You may even have to strike out a couple of times but eventually you will find one who is compassionate and understanding.Good luck.I've had the same problems with doctors and it's extremely frustrating.

me personally i will go from dr to dr until i feel i'm getting the respect and treatment i need and deserve

Okay then my next question is what did you do when searching for a new doctor? I can't receive scripts from multiple docs so I would hve to wait until my script is almost out right? And what if I strike out and they won't give me any medication? What would I do then? Or what do you do? I'm not arguing I agree I need a new doc I am just kind of looking for what to expect or how to handle this?
