I saw this film yesterday and didn't expect much thanks to IMDb's deceptive ratings but it was an awesome film. Supposedly based upon true events occuring on Sioux reservations during the 1970s, it had Val Kilmer as a half-native FBI agent "finding his roots" while trying to catch a murderer. Aside from the injection of mysticism it wasn't as cliché as it sounds. The plot was as concrete as they come but despite being very straight-forward it took a wild course and kept me engaged on a voyage of discovery to find out what would happen next. If there were anachronisms, they were well concealed amidst beautiful landscape shots of desolate South Dakota. Each and every character put in front of the camera was compelling; events unfolded very true-to-life and humour played a perfect foil to the tragedy and sense of hopeless despair that prevailed throughout. If you have anywhere near as much disdain as I do for plots in movies these days being full of holes and forcing the story at a terrible pace, you will revel in the watching of this gem for real.

I consider the movie a guilty pleasure. It also has one of my favorite quotes:

Walter Crow Horse: Oh, maybe it was just one of them, what do you call them? "Fitful dreams."
Ray Levoi: Yeah, fitful dreams.
(pause)
Walter Crow Horse: Fitful dreams, horse shit! You had yourself a vision!
