Throwing out pennies?

bsolescent silver coinage in the US is frequently quite valuable, the silver "JFK half dollar" is worth at least ten times that; at times people circulate it unawares. The silver nickel is worth at least $1, probably more,and if you have a decent enough pile of nickels you're almost guaranteed to find at least a few.

That's cool - thanks. I have seen the new ones, now that you've shown an example.

Australian currency is fairly hideous in many ways.
The $5 (and all coins) have a picture of the queen on them. And they're some kinda plastic.
When they first introduced "plastic money" (early 90s) people got wise to the fact that you can easily vandalise the queen's face; scratch out her eyes, blah blah - be creative.

But we phased out $1 and $2 bills even before 1c and 2c coins.

Funny you should mention that - the first "half dollars" ("fifty cent pieces" to us) made here when our currency went metric, were round, and made of pure silver. Cost over 50 cents to make, even back then.
I have a couple of them - one my Grandmother gave me, another i got as change from a busdriver as a kid.
Funny cos they're worth several dollars now :)
 
are the 1 and 2p. coins an aussie wombat or other native critter and a British dragon? either way pretty badass

I think the Israelis were the firstto adopt plastic currency, you can't tear,burn or practically do anything to it iirc

They're both native australian wildlife - the 1 cent has a Feathertail Glider on it ("the world's smallest gliding mammal") - a sort of possom marsupial thing that has webbed skin under its legs that enable it to "fly" (glyde) out of trees. Pretty cool, and fucking cute.

The 2 cent piece as a Frilled-Neck Lizard - another native and iconic creature - these are famous for puffing out the big lion's-mane kind of frills on their necks when threatened, to make em look big and scary. It's a shame they're not depicted on our currency any more - they're a total desert outback mad max kinda reptile. I dig em!

Lots of the people's faces printed on money are supposed to be "reptillian" anyway, right?
Queen Elizabeth II is on every one of our coins. Something something, new world order, inside job etc.
Fecking colonials.

I can't remember where i got the picture from to reference that. They look scary as fuck...but are probably more scared of you, and all that.
 
more often than not i take the time to leave pennies in the "leave a penny, take a penny" container which is usually situated on the clerk's desk adjacent to el register. if not, ill throw them in a cup when i get home.
 
australia has the baddest ass animals, among other things. visiting is high on my list of things I want to do. australians are also fun to get high with; I remember doing MDMA with an aussie at a psychedelic conference who kept wanting to talk to me about bluelight, and then steer the conversation as to whether I'd ever been involved with some other kinds of activites and he started making me a little uncomfortable.
 
Australian paper currency is also waterproof... always thought that was neat

I like to throw pennies indignantly on the street corners. I feel it's my way of aiding & abetting the US financial crisis ;)
 
Why would you 'throw out' money that you have worked for ? Put them in a jar or a bag - wait a few months and then give them away, go into a thrift store and give them to the cashier - or to a homeless guy/shelter etc.

I have a box of change that I collect for a year or so - I then bag that up into a few $ a bag and give it away.
