Jedi may sue Tesco over hood ban
A Jedi church leader is considering legal action after he was asked to leave a supermarket for wearing his hood.

Daniel Jones, 23, from Holyhead in North Wales, who founded the International Church of Jediism, claims Tesco in Bangor victimised him for his beliefs, reports the Daily Post.

He said: "It states in our Jedi doctrination that I can wear headwear. It just covers the back of my head.

"You have a choice of wearing headwear in your home or at work but you have to wear a cover for your head when you are in public."

Daniel, who works in Bangor, said he'd gone to the store to buy something to eat during his lunch-break but was told by staff to leave unless he took his hood off.

"They said: "Take it off and I said: "No, its part of my religion. It's part of my religious right." I gave them a Jedi church business card," he said.

Daniel has now made an official complaint and is seeking legal advice.

"It was discrimination. They were making a joke against me. I was really upset. Nobody should be treated like that," he moaned.

A Tesco spokesperson said: "Jedis are very welcome to shop in our stores although we would ask them to remove their hoods.

"Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Luke Skywalker all appeared hoodless without ever going over to the Dark Side and we are only aware of the Emperor as one who never removed his hood." -- Courtesy of Ananova.Com

Teen swings sword at rival in courthouse

Wednesday October 07 2009

A TEENAGER attempted to assault a young man with a full length sword in a packed courthouse in Limerick yesterday.

Terrified onlookers ran for cover when the 16-year-old brandished the weapon and a full-scale fight erupted in the foyer of the court building.

One garda managed to tackle the assailant from behind -- preventing him from seriously injuring anyone with the sword.

Officers made three arrests after the incident, which happened at around 12 noon in the public area of the courthouse.

Court Service staff, solicitors, barristers, journalists, gardai and members of the public were present in the building.

It is understood the fight is the latest incident in a long-running dispute between two Traveller families in Limerick.

Up to 400 people had gathered in the court building where 110 District Court appeals and numerous other criminal, family and civil cases were listed for hearing.

Members of a west Limerick Travelling family were on their way out of the Circuit Court building, following a brief hearing concerning public order and criminal damage offences, when the fight broke out.

Warned

They were about to leave the building when they doubled back inside after being warned of two members of the rival family who were lying in wait for them. It is understood that the 16-year-old had hidden the 3ft sword in his trousers.

Upon entering the courthouse, the teenager, from the outskirts of Limerick city, made a savage bid to assault his intended target with the sword.

As punches were exchanged, he drew the sword back over his head and swung it wildly at a rival -- narrowly missing his head by inches.

A fight ensued between eight people, as all in attendance, including a pregnant woman, ran for cover.

A garda officer ran into circuit court hearings and called for assistance.

Up to 20 gardai ran from a courtroom to stop the violence and Garda Tony Grey of Bruff garda station wrestled the sword away from the assailant, after tackling him from behind.

Last night, gardai were examining CCTV footage of the incident.

Earlier in the day, another altercation took place outside the District Court at 10.30am when a well known member of the McCarthy-Dundon gang was involved in a fight with an opponent.

Over recent years, there have been several violent incidents in the vicinity of the court buildings.

Those pics of the new Saturn ring are beeyoooootiful, Monsta <3

Re Jedi: Do Tesco make women wearing the burqa take it off in their shops? Or Jews remove the lil skull cap thing that I forget the name of? I doubt it. If he'd been waving a lightsabre about and lopping off limbs it'd be a different matter, I suppose.

Is it just me or is it either the news that's getting crazier or the general public in general (public in general public in general) who are getting weirder?...

it's called a kippah and it doesn't cover the face like them terrorist gowns, completely different :!. the guy's possibly trying to prove an interesting point about what constitutes a religion but as jedi is not considered one he has no grounds whatsoever. more likely he's just a weird prick?

A hood doesn't necessarily cover the face either, but a burqa certainly does and I seriously doubt Tesco would ask anyone to remove that. Also, I have a feeling that Jedi has been accepted as being a legit religion. Honestly :D

I also agree that he's most likely a weird prick but since when is a garment a threat? They'll be banning hoodies from shopping precincts next 8)

Asbestos garments might be considered a threat & if I put my mind to it I reckon I could invent a threatening garment - in fact it might be reasonable to ask what constitutes a threat - just so's I have something to work from

Cross-dressing cage fighters turn tables on yobs

A pair of yobs made the mistake of attacking two apparent transvestites on a night out, only to discover that their supposed victims were cage fighters.

Dean Gardener, 19, and Jason Fender, 22, set upon the cross-dressing men shortly after being involved in another street fight in Swansea.

CCTV footage shows the pair approach one of the men – dressed in a pink wig, miniskirt and boob tube – before Gardener throws a punch at him.

But the fight is over in a matter of seconds as the other cage fighter, sporting a wig and a sparkling black dress, floors both the assailants with two lightning-quick punches.

One of the cross-dressers then casually picks up his bag before the pair strut off, leaving Gardener and Fender lying on the pavement.

The attackers are arrested by police as they stagger down the road. Officers later learned the cross-dressers were actually cage fighters on a fancy dress stag night out.

Mark Davies, defending at Swansea Magistrates’ Court, said: “You know it cannot have been a good night when you get into a fight with two cross-dressing men.

“Unfortunately they were extremely drunk. They had been out drinking jugs of cocktails and Fender had drunk at least 10 pints of cider.”

Both men admitted using abusive words and behaviour. They were electronically tagged and given a four-month community order and a curfew from 7am to 7pm.

this is the best news video i've seen for a while :D

Jedi is an official religion nowadays. Although (quote from wikipedia) "In 2005, a draft of the "racial and religious hatred bill" in the UK specifically excluded Jedi Knights from any protection, alongside Satanists, Scientologists, sexists, racists, and believers in animal or human sacrifice". So I guess he has no grounds.

That drag queen vid is win btw. %)

it was given a census category to make counting easier, I don't think they're granted any special rights or anything

@ Evad - Aye I saw that Drag Queen story earlier on. Oh me oh my, of all the people to start a fight with.

"I'll show these couple of fairies who's boss". It was all over in a couple of brutal seconds - serves the cunts right. :D

I think a full on hazmat suit coupled with a trick geiger counter could constitute a threat if used properly in a crowded space.

Wearing the hazmat suit, slowly approach a suitcase someone has previously left somewhere in a public space whilst the trick geiger counter clicks higher and higher. As you bend down to examine the suitcase the geiger counter goes crazy and when enough people are watching you turn and run away from the suitcase as fast as you can.

If you get it wrong you might end up getting shot by the police though.

Stephen Gately found dead
Boyzone singer Stephen Gately, 33, has been found dead while on holiday.

Gately was in Majorca with his long-term partner Andy Cowles when he died on Saturday, the band's website said.

A spokesman for lead singer Ronan Keating said he was "totally devastated" and was returning from the US to join the group in Majorca.

Bertie Ahern, former Taoiseach, said Gately's death was a "huge loss". The Irish band had six UK number one hits in the 1990s and reformed last year.

A statement from the band said: "Ronan, Keith, Mikey and Shane are devastated by the news and send their deepest sympathies to Stephen's family and his many friends all over the world."

No details about the cause of death have been released but Spanish police said there were "no signs of suspicious circumstances".

The News of the World's showbusiness editor Dan Wootton told BBC News that Gately had gone out for drinks, returned to his accommodation and gone to sleep, but never woke up.

Boyzone manager Louis Walsh, who is due to appear as a judge on The X Factor results show on Sunday, told the newspaper: "We're all absolutely devastated."

He said: "I'm in complete shock. I was only with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We don't know much about what's happened yet.

"I only heard after The X Factor and we will rally around each other this week. He was a great man."

Singer Sir Elton John said: "David and I are stunned by this tragedy. Stephen was the kindest, gentlest soul.

"We send our love and condolences to his partner Andy and to all his friends everywhere."

Mr Ahern described Gately as a personal friend and his death as a "huge, huge tragedy" for Irish music and culture.

HAVE YOUR SAY
It's quite a shock. He had the best voice out of the band Caroline, BedfordshireWriting on the micro-blogging website Twitter, broadcaster Stephen Fry said: "Just heard the very sad news about dear Stephen Gately.

"What a dreadful shock. He was loveable and sweet-natured and will be hugely missed."

Music journalist Paul Gambaccini said: "It's sad on a personal level and a professional level."

Boyzone sold more singles than Take That in the 1990s, he said, and had 16 Top 5 singles.

Soldier dies after being given cancerous lungs in transplant operation
A soldier died after being given a pair of cancerous lungs in a transplant operation.

Published: 9:15AM BST 11 Oct 2009

Matthew Millington, 31, died at home in Brown Lees, near Stoke-on-Trent, after receiving the organs from a donor who is believed to have smoked between 30 and 50 roll-up cigarettes a day, an inquest heard.

Following the death, an investigation at Papworth Hospital, in Cambridge, pinpointed a string of problems, including issues with communication, record-keeping and patient handover. It found that a radiographer had failed to highlight the growth of a cancerous tumour.

Dr Steven Tsui, clinical director of transplant services, was not involved in the procedure, but told North Staffordshire Coroner's Court there had been problems.

He said: "There were a number of failures. I didn't feel the team performed to the standard I would expect."

Cpl Millington joined the army on his 16th birthday and rose to become a corporal in what was later to become the Queen's Royal Lancers.

He served as a tank crewman in Cyprus, Germany and Bosnia among other countries.

After leaving the Army in 2001, he was employed in a number of jobs, including installation engineer, factory worker and builder's labourer.

He was recalled in October 2005 and it was as he was serving in Iraq with the Queen's Royal Lancers at Christmas that year he was diagnosed with a lung illness.

He was told that he had only two years to live unless action was taken and in April 2007 received a double lung transplant.

But he died ten months later as a result of damage caused by disseminated lung cancer.

A lack of communication between radiographers and consultants meant it was not until October 2007 that a tumour, which had grown from eight mm to 13mm between June and August 2007 was detected.

Its' growth was accelerated by the immunosuppressive drugs Cpl Millington was taking to prevent his body rejecting the transplanted organ.

He died on February 8, 2008 at his family home in Stoke, Staffs, leaving behind wife Siobhan.

She told the inquest her husband had to go back into surgery three times in nine days as post-operative problems with infection and stitching emerged.

She said: "He came through the first one extremely well and when he woke up he said he wanted a full English breakfast.

"But it was after the third one he was in a state and in pain.

"He said from the moment he woke up other patients had told him he would be able to take a deep breath and be able to breathe.

"He said his lungs felt like two deflated balloons."

North Staffordshire coroner Ian Smith discounted a verdict of misadventure or neglect.

He said Cpl Millington had died from "complications of transplant surgery and immunosuppressive drug treatment".

He said: "This is the result the family wanted and at least these days there is more transparency about the way things are conducted.

"We are now away from the old days where things would be hushed up."

just saw this somewhere else

http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/search/display.var.2532194.0.kelvingrove_to_close_for_launch_party.php

the news story is pretty boring but read the comments left by Wayne King.

At 3:18pm, I intend to 'launch' a bobbing turd into the Clyde at Bells Bridge. The council have kindly agreed to close traffic on George Square from 7:30am, and will be setting up a large screen to broadcast live from my duung hatch. The stool will be a 'Type 99', with a bournville flake thrust into the tan toly.
