Two arrested after police discover suspected crystal meth lab in Manchester's Northern Quarter

It's not often a meth lab gets uncovered, especially round here. According to the article the drug is "popular among clubbers" which I must say was news to me; a minority of clubbers, maybe. Apart from that it's the usual hysteria - "devastated entire communities in the US" and some rent-a-neighbour worrying about what would happen to their kid in the event of an explosion.

Only wish I'd had the chance to sample the product.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/nov/25/mcdonalds-quits-rochdale-town-centre?newsfeed=true

The ubiquity of McDonald's golden arches in Britain's high streets is such that it's hard to imagine a large town without the logo emblazoned on a prime retail spot.

But in Rochdale, the restaurant's windows are boarded and its familiar red and yellow sign, a visible landmark in the Lancashire town for 28 years, has been removed.
Desperate times. Not just because I can't get a Big Mac with ease either, as I've moved outside of Rochdale, now. It's just sad to see my home town go from a thriving cotton and factory place, to a run down pile of shit. I had my 5th birthday in that Maccies, 22 years ago. They can't have been losing money, they had the best place on the high street, and it was always rammed at dinner time. Money hungry fucks, that aren't happy with what they're getting.

To be fair everyone else pulled out of Rochdale at least two decades ago, Treac. ;)

You're right about the mill towns surrounding Manchester though. Most of them are shadows of what they were even ten years ago. Sad.

I've been to Rochdale! it was for work tho, but lawdy it was grim. not quite as grim as my own town, but almost.

Couldn't find the RIP Steve Jobs thread, even tho I searched, so this is going here

anyway, I lol'd =D

Julian Assange: Apple iTunes lets Surveillance Companies to Control Users’ Computer
Julian Assange, Wikileaks founder said in an interview to Bureau of Investigative Journalism that a “flaw” in Apple iTunes lets Surveillance Companies to monitor and control over users’ Personal Computer.

iTunes has a flaw in it and that flaw is automatically used by some of these [surveillance] companies to take over whatever computer system is running iTunes. And there are these sorts of backdoors into every popular phone, into every popular computer and every popular computer program.

Assange made this affirmation in a private interview with the Bureau of Investigative Journalism before giving a talk in London on Thursday. In addition, he told about newly released documents (Spyfiles) to several students at London’s City University that revealed the large-scale surveillance of civilians by their government. According to The Spyfiles report in Wikileaks, “There are some International surveillance companies who sell their technology on to every country of the world. This industry is, in practice, unregulated. Intelligence agencies, military forces and police authorities are able to silently, and on mass, and secretly intercept calls and take over computers without the help or knowledge of the telecommunication providers. Users’ physical location can be tracked if they are carrying a mobile phone, even if it is only on stand by.”

Assange further revealed:

They are selling Trojans so if you go to some website or if someone sends you an email and bang, it infects your phone with a Trojan and it records what you’re saying in the room even when the phone doesn’t appear to be active.

Also, leaving aside above allegations, there are at present several confirmed cases of groups or companies, like Carrier IQ, which violated the confidentiality of those who use communication devices. Assange also claimed that the supposed widespread surveillance of civilians is “the equivalent of having a tank in your lounge” because what we do at home – use our phones, update Facebook, speaking to friends – is “being monitored by very sophisticated national security equipment.”

WikiLeaks is an international self-described not-for-profit organisation that publishes submissions of private, secret, and classified media from anonymous news sources, news leaks, and whistleblowers. At present, as a result of exposing U.S. embassies from around the world, five major US financial institutions, VISA, MasterCard, PayPal, Western Union and the Bank of America, have tried to economically strangle WikiLeaks. The attack has blocked over 95% of Wikileaks donations, costing tens of millions of dollars in lost revenue. You can support Wikileaks by donating through their official site.

Smugglers use remote-controlled aircraft to fly in cannabis http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-remote-controlled-aircraft-fly-cannabis.html

Hahaha
That's so Brass Eye =D
That was the first thing I thought when I saw this.
I mean Iran have just started an Uranium enrichment plan and obviously the US aren't happy about that.

I feel a bit conspirasy theorist thinking this, though I wouldn't put it past Amerkin agencies :\

I certainly wouldn't either. People sticking bombs to cars then driving off on motorbikes is big in Baghdad at the moment. Granted I don't have much of a grasp of Iranian politics but I can't see Iranians trying to thwart their own country's nuclear ambitions.

Thinking about demand it's probably more likely to be a crystal meph lab.

You'd think so, given the tendency of idiots to confuse the two. The article says they found methamphetamine percursors though.

There are a number of Thai and Vietnamese people living in the surrounding area, so maybe they were the target market. Who knows?

Xbox Factory Suicide Threat: Foxconn Workers At China's Wuhan Factory Threaten To Jump Off Building.
http://news.sky.com/home/world-news/article/16146955

Microsoft is investigating working conditions at a Chinese factory producing the Xbox games system after more than 300 employees reportedly threatened to throw themselves off a building.

Chinese news websites said aggrieved staff at the Foxconn factory in Wuhan had asked for a raise before the incident.
The employees were apparently told they could keep their jobs with no pay increase or resign and receive a pay-off.
But after most opted to leave and take the compensation, the offer was reportedly withdrawn and the workers did not receive their payments.
Websites, including Record China, said the decision sparked outrage at the factory, with production halted as the workers took to the building's roof.

The city's mayor eventually intervened to talk the group down, following the incident on January 2.
Foxconn, which also manufactures Nintendo, Apple and Sony products, hit the headlines in 2010 when more than a dozen employees committed suicide, leading the firm to install suicide-prevention nets at some of its plants.
Microsoft issued a statement to Sky News, saying: "Microsoft takes working conditions in the factories that manufacture its products very seriously, and we are currently investigating this issue.
"We have a stringent vendor code of conduct that spells out our expectations, and we monitor working conditions closely on an ongoing basis and address issues as they emerge.
"Microsoft is committed to the fair treatment and safety of workers employed by our vendors, and to ensuring conformance with Microsoft policy."

And this is just utter maddness!

The US schools with their own police
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jan/09/texas-police-schools

The charge on the police docket was "disrupting class". But that's not how 12-year-old Sarah Bustamantes saw her arrest for spraying two bursts of perfume on her neck in class because other children were bullying her with taunts of "you smell".

"I'm weird. Other kids don't like me," said Sarah, who has been diagnosed with attention-deficit and bipolar disorders and who is conscious of being overweight. "They were saying a lot of rude things to me. Just picking on me. So I sprayed myself with perfume. Then they said: 'Put that away, that's the most terrible smell I've ever smelled.' Then the teacher called the police."

The policeman didn't have far to come. He patrols the corridors of Sarah's school, Fulmore Middle in Austin, Texas. Like hundreds of schools in the state, and across large parts of the rest of the US, Fulmore Middle has its own police force with officers in uniform who carry guns to keep order in the canteens, playgrounds and lessons. Sarah was taken from class, charged with a criminal misdemeanour and ordered to appear in court.

Each day, hundreds of schoolchildren appear before courts in Texas charged with offences such as swearing, misbehaving on the school bus or getting in to a punch-up in the playground. Children have been arrested for possessing cigarettes, wearing "inappropriate" clothes and being late for school.

Bit long, not sure if I should post the whole thing?

I think the first one is little more important, as for shouting "hacker" on console games; it just shows that you're utterly crap at it :D

Nope, im a pro/ veteran at Cod4...

I used to sit at first place on free for all on servers for hours lol, then some hacker would lay under the map and kill me :( Pathetic

And this is just utter maddness!

ffs.

first they're diagnosing kids with bipolar and putting them on headfucking meds (read a story of parents being charged with murder of their 4 year old recently cos the kid died from her meds).

then they are sending them to court for taking proactive steps to defend themselves against bullying. really don't need to end that sentence, sending a 12 year old to court is bad enough.

again, ffs.

I know I could barely believe it when I got to the bit about them actually getting sent to fucking court!

Nope, im a pro/ veteran at Cod4...

I used to sit at first place on free for all on servers for hours lol, then some hacker would lay under the map and kill me :( Pathetic

That's a glitch, not a hack. Not like he's aimbotting. Learn how to do it and just play em at their own game. =P

From this morning's Guardian Monday 21 May:
Revealed: types and quantities of drugs seized by police at UK music festivals

Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act provide a unique insight into changing patterns of drug use at British music festivals

On the Isle of Wight it's been largely about cocaine and ecstasy, at Glastonbury the hauls of ketamine have been creeping up, while the drug of choice for heavy metal fans would seem to be Jack Daniels and other booze.

As a tens of thousands of young (and not so young) music fans await another festival season, new figures based on police activities at 10 major festivals over the past four years provide an insight into the range and scale of drugs seized.

They show that seizures of popular drugs such as cannabis and ecastasy have been in decline, possibly due factors such as changing behaviour, demographics and policing priorities.

Cocaine seizures have been in sharp decline since the onset of the economic hard times, and there is some evidence to back up suggestions that recreational drug users have been turning to relatively cheaper drugs like ketamine, the horse tranquilliser dubbed the 'new ecstasy'.

Individual events also meanwhile display particular characteristics when it comes to the type of drugs seized.

The lion's share of cocaine seizures last year took place at the Isle of Wight festival and the island's other big musical event, Bestival, where 50,000 people enjoyed an eclectic mix of rock, folk and dance.

The two festivals also stood out from the others in terms of ecstasy seizures, accounting for nearly half of the value of all drugs seized at Bestival last year.

By contrast, drug seizures were almost non-existant at the Womad (World of Music, Arts and Dance), often regarded as the festival of choice for a stereotypically Guardian-reading, older music fan. Last year, the only drugs confiscated in swoops by Wiltshire Police was cannabis with a street value of £151.

Expectations that rock fans meanwhile might be prone to emulating some of their harder living idols are also somewhat confounded. Seizures were comparatively low at the two festivals catering for them - the Download festival in Leicestershire and Sonisphere at Knebworth House, Hertfordshire.

At Sonisphere, where 190,000 fans last year moshed along to bands including Motorhead and Slipknot, just over £400 of drugs was seized across the weekend. It was mostly cannabis, with cocaine making up the balance. Ecstasy and amphetamines were absent.

At the country's best known gathering of music lovers, where Glastonbury organisor Michael Eavis last year said that the drug culture "had changed beyond belief" and that it was "a cheek to even suggest there's a problem", more than £200,000 worth of drugs has been seized by police over the past four years.

Last year's haul of more than £44,000 was a rise of 12% on the previous year although, like other festivals where larger quanties of drugs have been confiscated, seizures are considerably down on 2009's relative high.

Across all ten festivals - Glastonbury, V, the Isle of Wight, Bestival, Download, Sonisphere, Leeds, Reading, Womad and Wireless- there has been a sharp decline since that year in the value both of cocaine and cannabis seized, according to the figures obtained through a series of Freedom of Information requests by Request Initiative, a nonprofit that makes requests for charities and NGOs.

The graphics below show total street values of drugs seized in 2011, with figures broken down by substance and festival.

not got time to write much atm, but just briefly on this:

Either they're just good at hiding it (doubtful), or they just need to take more drugs? ;p

How the fuck is it legal for a newspaper to publish such garbage as Ketamine being the new 'ecstacy', not only is it dangerous its completely unfounded and untrue. This article should be discussing the dangers of BZP/Piperazine being sold at places like Glastonbury labelled as ecstacy and making more people aware that the pill might not always contain MDMA. Not drugs like ketamine which are going to be much safer, in fact this article is just misleading people to think that the typical 200mg line of MDMA they'd be sniffing will be fine for ketamine.

Cunts didn't take my acid/drone/ket at Wireless ahaha. Although it was a fairly alcohol fuelled day, despite it being Aphex/Chemical Brothers.
