CEDAR RAPIDS -- Managers at several Cedar Rapids grocery stores recently noticed a certain product has become almost impossible to keep in stock. It's not because people are buying it.

This simple item is often used in muffins, cakes and even salad dressing. Now, some people have found another use for it and they're ripping it off the shelves.

You'd expect thieves to target a grocery store's pharmacy or even liquor department.

But, at several local Hyvee stores, criminals are shaking down the spice aisle...searching for poppy seeds.

"We would receive a shipment of the item in one evening, get it stocked and by noon the next day, all of it would be off the shelf," Hyvee manager Brian Wills said.

Managers couldn't understand why anyone would steal from the store's spice rack. A container of poppy seeds costs less than a buck.

"We thought maybe we missed something on a cooking show or something like that, and we just weren't keeping up," Wills said.

Store officials went on the internet and learned large amounts of the spice can be used to create poppy seed tea.

The drink acts like morphine and can make people feel high or even hallucinate. Other more serious side effects are also possible.

"Some of the effects they may feel will be dizziness, nausea, sedation, itching and cardiac arrest. So, these are not real desirable symptoms," addiction specialist Shawn Stepp said.

At many Hyvee stores, theft got so bad, the spice now sits behind the service desk.

"It's not typical for a retail operation to pay an awful lot of attention to their spices," Wills said.

It's a small, cheap ingredient tucked among shelves of more appetizing items to steal.

But, managers say they couldn't keep the spice in stock, so they had to do something.

Addiction experts say it takes several pounds of poppy seeds just to make one cup of the tea. Remember, the drink can be dangerous and even fatal.

Nutmeg can also act as a dangerous narcotic when taken in large quantities. However, stores tell us they haven't had a problem with people stealing that spice.

A real big thanks to the assholes who caused what is as far as I can tell the first mention of PST in the US media, just to save a few fucking dollars. Stealing a container costing a dollar?!

This is how shit gets ruined for the rest of us, now you have to ask at the service desk and what do you want to bet you'll be cut off after a few times?

well looks like all the junior junkies with seed tea habits might have to move on to real drugs. either that or buy pods.

im not surpirsed by this, i knew it would get media attention sooner or later. ah well.

will a few pounds of that stuff really get you high?!? people are f-ing retarded.... spend 10 dollars on a bag of dope.. SHIT

Depends on how much opium residue is on the seeds, if you get lucky and find real potent ones washing a quarter pound or even less can get you nice and high if you have no tolerance.

I tell you I've had better highs from two bucks worth of seed then from a OC80 taken whole and orally, problem is how transient the supply is.

That is sad sounds like some 13-year-old kids stealing garbage they need some guidance.
If they are going to steal at least get some thing good some liquor and cigars or something worthwhile.
Or get a paper route and buy some real drugs.

Seeds are expensive at all the supermarkets around here...

yeah, same here. i've never seen them for less than like 3.50. i really, really would like to know what brand these Hyvee stores carry, because I find it very hard to believe that those poppy seeds are less than a dollar. or even less than 2.50. sure, i've seen them cheap online and for bulk, but not in any spice aisle, no way.

i doubt the gov. will make it illegal. but this is the first ive heard about the poppy seeds in the media.

A hyvee near me, and relatively close to cedar rapids offers poppy seeds for 99c a pound. A pound gets me very high.

Can't imagine stealing them.

This is just sad but im not surprised really. Stupid kidiots will steal anything to get high. Hell they had to put gravol behind the counter in alot of stores where i live because kids would steal boxes of it. Even though you could get 50 generic dimenhydrinate pills for about 2 lousy dollars. There was also a few cases of teenagers being found wandering the streets completely fucked on gravol so that made the news too.

Poppy seeds are pretty cheap here you can get 500 grams for about $1 last time i checked. Thankfully nobody around here really knows what they are so nobody gets high from them.

There is a web site up with some parents warning about how poppy seed tea can kill you after their 17 year old son died on the stuff. It's the first one that pops up when you google poppy seed tea.

I love how the mention thats it's like playing a potentially deadly game of russian roulette. All drug stories mention that just about. Also isn't every game of russian roulette potentially deadly?

im tempted to contact them and be like "thanks for the drug tips im heading the local market first thing tomorrow!!!"

^^The same thing happenend in a town I came from after a local news station did a big expose on morning glory seeds (and one on dxm as well, the stores coulndt keep them in stock:) All these stories do is teach more kids what they can get high on from wal-mart:!

I cant wait to see how the DEA Nazis are going to deal with this one..... what are they going to do make poppy seeds illegal? =D

def not, that'd be takin it way too far. fuckin poppy seeds, to be that cheap they can't be of any real quality at all, just fuckin throw down the 2 dollars of whatever. Sucks how dumbass people bring the heat over something stupid that could be easily acquired legit, and like others said, just go get a bag of dope if your that desperate to catch a high. Just brings DEA attention, they start their "crusade" against whatever chem, and before you know, it's emergency scheduled...bullshit, people need to use and acquire drugs as under the radar as absolutely possible, not go about their business like a fool, not to mention ruining a descent thing for responsible drug users.

That's a great idea but would never ever happen. A small group can, sometimes, keep a secret. If there's something legal that's worthwhile (salvia, hmmm I'll hold back the others outta respect since they're still legal - but most people wouldn't do that :) ), it's gonna get popular and expose itself to legislation.
