USA... *sigh*... sux.
I must say, pregabalin (Lyrica in the US) has got to be the most useful drug of all time, at least as relates to stimulant users. Anyone who hasn't added it to their toolbox is literally missing out on a miracle drug of sorts, IMO.

Let's start with the pharmacology, which is extremely unique, to say the least. From RXList (I snipped a few sentences):

Rxlist.com said:
While pregabalin is a structural derivative of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), it does not bind directly to GABAA, GABAB, or benzodiazepine receptors, does not augment GABAA responses in cultured neurons, does not alter rat brain GABA concentration or have acute effects on GABA uptake or degradation.

Pregabalin does not block sodium channels, is not active at opiate receptors, and does not alter cyclooxygenase enzyme activity. It is inactive at serotonin and dopamine receptors and does not inhibit dopamine, serotonin, or noradrenaline reuptake. Pregabalin does not bind to plasma proteins.

Pregabalin undergoes negligible metabolism in humans. Following a dose of radiolabeled pregabalin, approximately 90% of the administered dose was recovered in the urine as unchanged pregabalin. The N-methylated derivative of pregabalin, the major metabolite of pregabalin found in urine, accounted for 0.9% of the dose.
Now this is weird. It almost seems to be pharmacologically inert. This results in one of its main benefits, which is that it can be taken with most other substances without fear of drug interactions and resulting nasty side effects. You can get too much CNS depression if you mix it with lots of other downers, but hopefully nobody would want to do that anyway.

As far as the real benefit goes however, it hasn't really been documented yet AFAIK. And it's this: At least for me, pregabalin (even a low-moderate dose) will bring me down off a stimulant high within 15-20 minutes. I mean all the way to baseline, and even below if too much of the stuff is taken! It's literally like tossing water onto a fire.

This has *sort of* been documented (i.e. everyone knows it 'damps' neuronal overactivity) but I'm not sure how many people realize that it isn't damping in the normal sense of "pushing against" anxiety or overstimulation. Given the right dose, there's no overactivity there at all anymore. It's *gone*.

It's really too bad stimulant users in general don't have free/easy access to this stuff. I got some left over from a prior prescription, about 120 50-mg tabs (should last me awhile, and when I run out I'll just ask my doc if I can go back on it again ;)). It is so useful, it's difficult to find the right words. Say you've been rolling awhile and want to get some sleep? Take 100mg and lie down... chances are that will do the trick, and you don't have to wait for the stimulant to wear off.

The main prob with the stuff is too much of it makes a person seriously damn clumsy... I mean literally "walking straight into walls" clumsy. It's hardly ever necessary to take so much it causes much of an issue tho. The stuff is just a godsend, it's essentially nonaddictive (although I understand tolerance builds rapidly if used regularly, which we don't want to do), low on side effects, and nearly free of drug interactions. I have never found anything that works even REMOTELY as well... benzos work against the stimulation, but this stuff literally DELETES it.

^ I wouldn't place any large bets on the 'essentially non-addictive' aspect. It is sort of similar to benzos and I like it too. I think it would be great for benzo and/or opiate w/d. You're probably too young to remember...but the same thing was said about Valium in the 60's and 70's. They were a non addictive alternative to barbs. Look where that ended up.

Anything that alters the CNS would have some sort of 'discontinuation syndrome". It does dampen the CNS by binding to something called the delta 2 receptors which apparently slows things down.

I find 450-600mg with some weed gives a nice unique buzz.

:)

Is this similar to Neurontin (Gabapentin?)

I am prescribed 1mg clonazepam a day, and 1mg alprazolam. Also, have a script of propranolol for stage fright (speeches.)

Do you think the doctor will prescribe this to me? Gabapentin seems to really help as a mood stabilizer, AND gives me some type of motivation.

Im a big fan of pregab. I like how mellow the effect is. Just like a chill buzz with no comedown. The only side effect I ever noticed was a little confusion the morning after I took a large amount. However, it wasn't very severe, and it went away quickly.

Its supposed to just be a more potent version of neurontin. However, lyrica has a very narrow prescribing index, in that it is only given for neuropathic pain and pain from shingles. They may eventually start giving it as a modd stabilizer like neurontin is.

Thanks ^ Neurontin it is, in the meantime. Anyone know how much it costs w/o insurance (ie 600mg/day for a month.) Is there a generic?

I think they have a generic available. Although I could be wrong. Just call up your pharmacy and ask if they have a generic.

99% sure there is no generic.

and its damn expensive, ie no way in hell you could (would want to) buy it w/o insurance. sorry I don't have #s on hand.

60 75mg capsules are $25.00 at my walgreens at least, i don't think is posting prices considering it's a legal venue.

There is generic Neurotonin. Lyrica is under patent still as far as I know.

60 x 150mg caps are $169.03 in Canada. Just checked my thingy from the pharmacy. Luckily I don't pay for them as my insurance covers it. It's not cheap.

Lyrica is basically second generation Neurotonin. They put it out after the Neurotonin patent ran out. Old big pharma trick. It is supposedly absorbed much better and is more effective at lower doses.

I was actually prescribed Lyrica for migraine headaches, and my doctor also said it might help with my anxiety. Bizarre.

Are you in the US? If so, are you sure he didn't give you gabapentin? It is prescribed for neuropathic pain and has side-label uses for anxiety and mood-stabilization.

LaughinFit, how do you find it to go with Escitalopram? I'm in Canada and I am scripted Lyrica 150mg Tablets, supposed to take three/day sometimes, I only take one a day, sometimes none a day, because I have also been trying to kick an oxycodone habit for many months now.

I don't know if the Escitalopram is making me so drowsy, or if its just the combination of oxycodone + escitalopram.. but once i get off oxycodone, i hope that escitalopram picks up in a positive way, otherwise i might be forced to goto Effexor XR and I heard it is impossible to get off that drug. Although there is a generic for Effexor XR in Canada now.

Hey i'm on Lexapro as well and it makes me EXTREMELY DROWSY. Took oxycodone yesterday and today and that gave me energy! The lexapro really makes me lethargic tho, have not had any energy since i started taking it (3-4 weeks ago). I have an Rx for 150mg and 50mg Lyrica's but I have yet to mix them with Lexapro. Has anyone done this before?

I take 300-600mg of gabapentin (Neurontin) / day.

When i get bored i think about trying some Lyrica but last time i took 150mg I just felt stupid and drowsy.

I must be the only person that doesn't get drowsy from Lexapro, and actually get energy and stimulation.

I felt the Lexapro 10mg (starting dose) the second day I was on it. I was almost manic, with thoughts about life's beauty and also it's problems...staying up with thoughts racing.

People close to me or even friendly strangers, animals and nature seemed so peaceful and beautiful to me. Senses were enhanced, and even though I smoke herb and hash...even the smell of tobacco was disgusting.

I felt like I needed to do everything, until about week 3-4 when I finally got adjusted to escitalopram. I am now on 20mg (I break the pill and take half in the morning, half at 3:30pm.)

If I take an extra 5-10mg from time to time, I get the honeymoon effect of this quickly acting SSRI (7 days is their claim to fame, even though it takes some months. 2 days it all it took for me.)

Then again, everyone reacts differently to any chemical compound. Have you all been on doses of ssri's for a significant amount of time? I just got back from Cali, and am off to smoke some of the best bubble hash I have ever come in contact with (tastes like warm cinnamon bagels and is very sweet/thick/potent from Mendocino County.) I've been gardening and cleaning/unpacking all day.

Peace,

%)
