Television The Walking Dead

LOL AR. I haven't even noticed Robert Kirkman's apparent overuse of the italics. I do think that Kirkman is the best comic-writer in the game. have you two read any of the current issues? it's so damn exciting, our survivors are finally stable in a big community, and they've just been informed that there are tons of other large communities out there, and they are about to check out these big-towns and possibly set up trading routes... basically, some damn exciting stuff

yeah, I'm looking forward to the return. in the latter part of Season 2 they are going to introduce that place, and one of my favorite female characters, Michonne. this is more than enough to get me interested/invested

Yeah, I can't wait for it to come back. I had a fun Sunday night ritual of "Take a drink every time a scene makes you facepalm".

It's a terrible show, but I found a way to make it really fun to watch.

yeah, I think Season 2 really suffered without Frank Darabont's attention as producer/director. this is a classic case of AMC thinking that they can cut costs dramatically by firing him, and for some reason, still be deluded enough to thinking their product won't suffer

I'm banking for Season 2, Part 2 to really up the ante. if they don't...

I loved season one. I tripped hard on the tank scene... so fucking scary. Then season two, first episode hiding under the vehicles was good.

And then they took a crap in front of me the rest of the season, and for some damned reason I kept watching hoping I would get a peanut in the crap. I really have high hopes for the second part of this season.

Thank god the little girl is dead. Now they need to kill off the son, and the girls mother, and Lori... what a bitch she is. I think they really skimped budget this season. How hard is it to get a barn and a farmhouse with the property values in the crapper.. Im guessing not too hard. Im ranting. Sorry guys. You are innocent.

How long do you think before they get to the prison? I am going to be pissed if on the last episode they stumble upon it and then we have to wait for season three. I have been pleased with very little of the TV series so far. I feel like the whole premise of the comic is that bad things happen to good people for absolutely no reason(despite it being the zombie apocalypse). The TV series has done a half ass job at portraying that.

Example: Shane is still alive. WTF? At least as some others have stated, there is the governor and Michonne to look forward to in season 3.

honestly, it seems like this show is going to stumble-upon both Michonne and maybe the prison at the very end of this season. it's cheap, but I guess if you're going to do a show off of a comic book, you better have mastered the art of the cliff-hanger

and yeah, Shane is still alive. when they asked series creator Robert Kirkman about this, he did say that he was forced to do what he did to Shane earlier in the comics series, because he just started the Walking Dead, with publishing from Image Comics even, so he Kirkman didn't know if his fledgling series was going to survive after this first 6-issue story arc

it looks like TWD has done a good job of surviving ;)

EDIT: oh, and it appears as if it's true, Rutina Wesley will be portraying one of the best comic characters of all-time, katana-wielding-former-layer-from-Atlanta - Michonne!!

so I take it Rick doesn't like Nebraska too much? :D

this episode started off more of the same... but I absolutely LOVED the last scene at the bar. Hershel's acting chops are present. you could literally feel the tension rising as the two guys from Up North started to get more and more untrustworthy. FINALLY Rick established himself as a BAD ASS, and not just a character who makes you cringe

I feel like the show is getting back on track by show-casing "bad" survivors. after all, the Walking Dead isn't meant to refer to the zombies, here...

and here are some good TWD e-Valentines Day Cards! NSFW for size!

first, here are the V-Day cards from the comic (since we all know you should hang your head in shame if you don't read TWD monthly, I put them first)

I honestly believe that AMC did not give the creators of this show advance notice (as in before filming) that they were going to split the season in two. My Walking Dead Compendium has taken a backseat to reading the Song of Ice and Fire series, but from what I see the time they spend on Hershel's ranch is the only extended respite from constant danger that Rick and Crew receive. Shit is going to seriously kick off now, and I imagine that many of the characters we believe to be safe will die off, which is intended to make us kick ourselves in the ass for wanting more action.

I think AMC being self-destructive assholes did have a severe negative impact on this episode, however, because we as an audience are already done giving a fuck about Sophia. The first half of the episode was essentially wasted time to an audience that is already removed from the situation.

I would also attribute some of the criticism of this season to some poorly thought out characters, as well. Lori is a psychobitch who's actions never make any sense to me. I don't mind the occasional stupidity driven plot-line, but when stupidity driven plot-lines are all a particular character does over and over and over again, repeating the same mistakes in every episode, it begins to drive me crazy. This show had much better dialogue in Season 1, and retaining some of that could have made Hershel's farm a little less tedious. I believe that spending so many episodes doing the same thing over and over again in the same locations was a miscalculation, and Hershel's farm is not something they could have simply skipped over, but I really don't know if they had to spend six episodes searching for Sophia, and watching Carl mend, and having Rick and Hershel debate the philosophy of zombies (are they still people are not? Who the fuck cares after the 18th conversation?) and whether or not the group can stay with them.

On the other hand, I really like where they're going with Shane as compared to the Comics. His mental breakdown was essentially instantaneous in the comics, while in the show we see him slowly snapping, and truly becoming somebody that everybody knows is dangerous. The actions that will inevitably follow make a lot more sense this time around.

And the bar scene kicked fucking ass. I'm willing to bet that those two guys came from the prison. Rick turned into one bad motherfucker at that moment. It's always good to be able to recognize who your psychopaths are in these kinds of situations.

And why isn't Tyrese on the show? He is a good character in the books, definitely not one who should be omitted. It seems a little late to introduce him at this point, unless they really want to fuck around and make Tyrese Michonne's dad.

Anyways, here's to hoping that shit continues going wild from here on out. As we all know, the dialogue/action ratio has been way the fuck on the wrong side so far, with the exception of this episode, and I seriously hope they plan on making it up to us. This is supposed to be a show about zombies that has considerably more character depth than your average zombie film, but these guys shouldn't get all carried away and believe they are making a drama of the quality of Mad Men or Breaking Bad. Action is the driving force of this series, while greater than average character depth is the edge this show has over typical zombie movies due to its ability to actually make us give a fuck if somebody dies. Believing you have Academy Award quality writers and actors on a show about zombies is ego-maniacal. It works in the Comics, but not on TV.

Anyways, here's to hoping it continues to get better. It's time for Rick's people to hit the road, I hope.

I am seriously impressed with this show's ability to do absolutely nothing over the course of an entire hour. Aside from Rick's scene at the very end, there was absolutely no plot or character development, whatsoever, at all, none. When you have a show that doesn't develop its characters (even though it might think it's trying to), and doesn't progress any sort of story, then you are basically putting out an unwatchable waste of an hour and mixing it in with advertisements...

/rant

In brighter news, I do think things are going to pick up, and for more reasons than that they cannot possibly slow down any further.

so I take it Rick doesn't like Nebraska too much? :D

Nobody does. But at least when the Zombie Apocalypse hits, the fact that people are vastly outnumbered by cattle might be an advantage.

And yeah, the episode sucked. I'm gonna stick with the show until they leave the ranch in hopes that something might actually happen, because I'm an optimist.

i'm just about convinced at this point that i've been watching a different show than the one discussed in this thread. not sure how it warrants so much negativity. i've really enjoyed season 2 so far, and thought episode 8 was great!

I personally think a lot of it has to do with budget issues. I am convinced that AMC wasn't too sure about the future prospects of this show, so they decided to make this season on the ultra-ultra-cheap. As was mentioned somewhere above, how much can it cost to rent out a farmhouse as your only set-piece for an entire season. On top of that you simultaneously cut down the number of zombie appearances (in a zombie show), and you have a really low risk investment. My guess is that it should get a lot better as this season progresses and on into the third season.

batmanplaybaseball: you are true on AMC being too cheap. a big reason I think this season doesn't quite match its first season is because AMC cut off Executive Producer and sometimes director, Frank Darabont. I haven't posted this, but I read on this other forum the actual script from Darabont's take of the first episode in Season 2

and let me tell you, this episode that never saw the light of day was mind-blowing. he basically ran us through the actual collapse of Atlanta through the eyes of that tank zombie that Rick encounters when he gets thrown in that tank, and how this tank zombie became zombified. it was tight because they obviously were going to pump some money through and show the actual disintegration of society, thru the National Guard. also, it shows how Dale met those two sisters Amy + Andrea, the soldiers opened fire and Dale ducked the two out of the line of fire at the very last second. their relationships's origin was never shown in the comics, and I thought Darabont was going to do a fantastic episode if he wasn't fired at the last second

3, 4 - I'm so grateful that you've been reading that TWD Compendium. your right, Hershel's farm only took up a couple issues - they need to get moving

Tyreese is also one of my favorite main characters in the books, because he was a big, bad-ass former football player for the Atlanta Falcons, and he really was Rick's equal in everything, but most importantly in leading the group. Tyreese was such a great side-kick character. but at this point, I feel like they have to introduce Tyreese before they do Michonne, it just makes too much chronological sense. if Tyreese does come to the show, I hope he kills off that T-Dog character, LOL. a lot of TWD fans were pissed because it seemed like T-Dog, in the first season, might have tried to be a poor man's AMC version of Tyreese - I'm so happy that that didn't happen!

getting back to the show - I am so happy that they have included those two "bad" survivors from Up North, I think vibr8tor is right in that this show isn't as bad as most here proclaim! wait a second, vibby, didn't I lend you my copy of the Walking Dead trade-paperback to read, way back when??

McGrunge - you from Nebraska or something, man? LOL - I have nothing against the Cornhusking State, and you're right, it would make sense for survivors to go there

if we're talking about the safest places in America for survivors, then I would go with Colorado - or near any Western Mountain. talk about a natural defense!!

I love talking about the possibility of zombies and the eventual apocalypse. it seems like out of the three, one can pick two (about their surroundings):

Safety
Food
Climate

axl, i don't know about you, but i think you can pick all three. part of my incredulity about this show is that it takes place in Georgia. During the summer. I don't know how many of you have been here, but we had days where the water came out of the tap, set to cold, at 88 degrees farenheit. It gets hot as a motherfucker here. Assuming that whatever reanimates the zombies doesn't also preserve them, i would assume the safest places to be are places like Miami and New Orleans -- the heat and the humidity would decompose those fuckers so super fast, or places like Colorado, where they would freeze and be buried under tons of snow. PB and I went up to the mountains of north Georgia over the weekend to see his parents new house, and I spent a good amount of my time there discussing the End Times. Their new house is in a holler, and sparsely inhabited. There's a clydesdale farm near by, and a blueberry farm. A mild looking creek runs behind their house. I told PB's brother that between the three of us, we have the skills to remake civilization (beer brewing, sewing/knitting, blacksmithing, gardening.). I worry too much about this kind of shit.

Anyway, this last episode sounded great. I didn't actually ~watch~ it, just listened, and damn, was that sweet as fuck what Rick did. I knew that they were either going back to the farm by gunpoint or someone was going to die. Rick just is a fucking gunslinger, man. Also, Shane sounds like he's starting to fall apart. I think everyone else can smell it on him.

I am glad to see True Blood actors getting work now that they've been killed off of that show (Rutina Wesley, that one guy who played Renee).
