Thing being, Hitler couldn't have gotten away with the shit he did in any other country or in any other time period. It was kind of the perfect storm.
The German people were beat down and oppressed from losing World War I. Their economy was in absolute shambles (if you think our economy is bad today, you have no idea) and they were lead by a bunch of buffoons.
Oh yeah, the German people are also a prideful, industrious, and active populace who weren't content with being the bottom rung of the world society/stage/etc.
If Germany had been prospering, rich, bountiful, with no unemployment, and all that then Hitler would have never found any traction. It was only because the German people were at the end of their rope and looking for any salvation they could find that allowed Hitler to come to power.
And of course, the real problem was, once Hitler got to power he did a lot of great things. He got people working again. He resorted national pride. He got the Olympics hosted in Berlin, etc. So of course the people were going along with whatever he wanted. Then, once he started doing crazy shit like invading every damn place and mass murdering Jews and whatnot, it was a runaway train that couldn't be stopped. You couldn't speak out because if you did the Gestapo came and made you disappear.
Someone above said that if Obama told everyone in America to go murder bankers that nobody would do it. Well, of course we wouldn't. We're not anywhere near as bad off as the Germans were during that time period. Obama also hasn't gotten anything worthwhile done for us as yet.
I think a better example is George Bush and his administration. We got attacked on 9/11 and everyone freaked out. Then we just allowed Dubya and his pals to invade a country that didn't attack us, spend BILLIONS of dollars on no-bid contracts with companies like Haliburton, and to pass legislation like the freaking Patriot Act. Could Dubya have gotten away with that shit without 9/11? Hell no. Yet it happened and then all of a sudden nobody said a damn word to stop him. The vote to go to war in Iraq passed the Congress almost unanimously, IIRC.
I'm not trying to downplay what the German people did, but they got fooled just like Americans got fooled. Unfortunately for them, they lived in an earlier time period and were fooled by a maniacal psychopath and couldn't get him out of power. We Americans got fooled by a moronic puppet of the elitist cabals that run this country. Now they've got a new puppet in office. He's better looking, more articulate, and oh yeah, he's a darker shade, too! He's still a puppet and we're still being led around by the nose just like the German people were. Except instead of fretting over terrorism and giving up our rights like we did under Bush, we're fretting over the economy and letting corrupt bankers fuck the system and then get bailed out with our taxpayer dollars. Which coincidentally, we technically don't have to spend since our deficit is now in the nosebleed section and only getting higher.
