The Travel Thread - Second Destination

I was going to go direct to Singapore for £510 before prices shot up past £800.

I just got quoted £1800 for Singapore bus class, so £800 for econ seems steep. Mine is via Qatar though.

just got three injections for my trip to brazil, one in each arm and one in the arse.

wasnt an IV or an IM, he had some other name for it but it was nothing (and i have a huge phobia of needles)

needle was only round 3 inches long and barely felt it, left arm is a little numb at the moment but its not that bad

this time two weeks ill be in the airport with a pint of beer heheh.. its a nice flight time too, not leaving dublin till round 5pm and then to paris for our next flight on to rio.. so maybe even get some sleep on the plane

air france are a good airline tho so if not ill just sit up all night watching movies on the personal tv screens which i checked that they had before booking, cud have flew with spanish airline iberia from madrid but they have shite service, reviews and entertainment system

subcutaneous?

i need to get away from here wish i had the means to do so.

what was all that about again? bluelight in joke memory is failing me :(

i need to get away from here wish i had the means to do so.

Snap!

I'm saving right now. I've got about £300 in loose change so far and a couple hundred in the bank. Just want to fuck off to somewhere sunny and pleasent. Not really fussed where it is.

yeah think that might have been the one evad, my left arm is pretty sore when i tough it but other arm and arse are fine lol
didnt get any sickness really yet either despite the amount of sihte the cunt put in my system

been looking at brazil travel tips all day, i dont know what the hell to do

should i bring or use my visa or my debit card? should i bring cash?

if i get travellers checks, how do i cash them etc

how am i gona carry money with me without getting pick pocketed?

it says if someone mugs u give them what u have, but if u have money stashed in a shoe or a money belt etc shud i just own up and hand it all over or just let them take what they find?

brazil sounds dodgey as fuck but its making it exciting for me, but i want to be confident on what im going to do regarding money etc before i go

i wana buy a new digi cam too but im afraid itll get robbed now

Red Arrow, you luck bastard, where abouts in Brazil are you headed?

I've spent a fair bit of time living in Brazil in my youth so I'll try and answer some of your questions.

Cash machines, cash etc: would reccomend taking a few Reais to get started but apparently it's very hard to get from places in the UK nowadays. Don't bother with dollars, it's a myth that everyone accepts them. Generally, only Visa cards are guaranteed to work in places, in my experience. Lots of cash machines will say Maestro on them but won't actually let you take money out. Get an HSBC account is a good tip, tbh, because they're all over Brazil so if cash machine doesn't work, you can take money out over the counter. Generally, it's not such a problem in the big cities but it can be particularly hard to get cash far out in the sticks and, as Brazil is so huge, you'll find yourself frequently hundreds of miles away from civilisation so you end up doing the old mental juggling act of trying to weigh up the pros and cons of having enough cash against the dangers of carrying sums of money on you. All of which brings us to:

Pick pockets, etc: Actual pickpockets ("furtos") are not as common as you think but "asaltos" (muggings) are rife in some (but by no means all) areas. It's all about "DPL" (Dinheiro pro ladrao") Carry a little bit of cash (5, 10 Reais say) in your wallet and give it up straight away when asked. Keep all your important stuff (ie. cash card, passport, etc) in a sneaky pocket somewhere. Don't keep a bag around your neck or wast as that makes it far too obvious you're foreign and have stuff to rob. The most important things to bear in mind though, IMO, are, firstly, don't get obsessive about this stuff: if you're gonna get jacked, you're gonna get jacked. If someone who's armed gives you a good going over, you're probably going to lose your stuff, no matter how well hidden it is. Secondly, street crime, while rife in a way that seems utterly alien to people in the UK, is still not as bad as you'd think. You're not literally going to get jacked just for walking down the street and most parts of Brazil are relatively safe. I'd say to be extra careful in Rio, Salvador, Recife and some areas of Sao Paulo but the rest of the country, particularly the South and Centre West areas are relatively safe, provided you keep your wits about you. Learn a bit of the language so you're not completely unaware of what's going on around you. All big cities (and even some small towns) will have "favelas" or "morros", but I'd guess you probably know the score on that already. As a comparison, I've lived in Brazil for a little over two years and never been robbed but have been mugged twice in the UK so don't sweat it too much and let it ruin your trip but do stay sharp.

Wouldn't reccomend carrying an expensive digi cam around with you to be honest, get something you're not going to be too gutted about using as the number one places to lose stuff like that are long distances buses, etc, which you're probably going to use a lot.

Also, Brazilian people are ridiculously friendly, almost to the point of absurdity. The thing is to realise when to say no to things politely and not take advantage as Brazilians will often offer you stuff they can't really give and never tell you to your face if you're pissing them off. Ditto, for the birds: if you're blonde and blue eyed at all you're gonna love the North East but laying loads of local birds may not make you too popular with the local male population so keep it on a downlow and use a condom.

Be careful with drugs too. There's loads of lovely Brazilian bushweed ("maconha") about but it is very illegal and being foreign and getting caught with it can land you in a world of shit. As a general rule, I'd say leave that stuff for when you're out in the sticks and steer clear of it in the cities. Cocaine (sold in "papelzinhos") too, is abundant and cheap and, despite being heavily cut, is a whole lot stronger than what you've had in the UK but can lead you into the company of some shady people so take care. Ecstacy is hard to come by and expensive but generally very good quality.

Anyways, enjoy yourself, if you want some tips on places to visit or language let me know. Don't forget to bring me back some Kuat!

thanks for the advice man
i fly into rio on the 11th of feb which is wednesday week and we are staying there or in the general area for around a week *although we are flexable, then we are going to go to the carnival in sao paolo and fly home from there on the 26th

not sure really what to do in the mean time but looking at lots of things, such as hang gliding over copacabana etc

really wanted to go to see the igazu falls but its a 22 hour bus ride and flights are extortionate apparently

going with the GF so i wont be able to shag any brazilian birds or make any brazilian locals pissed off at me for shagging them lol..

will probs be mainly in sao paolo and rio, do u think that i shud avoid drugs completely for the entrity of the trip?

the missus has very basic spanish but no portugese, we will both try and pick up the basics in the next two weeks and will buy a phrase book too... hopefully it doesnt mean we will have too many issues with communicating with people there

would love to find some nice clubs to check in either of said cities, i hear dnb is big down there - marky and patife etc both hailing from brazil... altho cant find much bout the scene on the internet unfortunately

u think if i get jacked that i shud just hand over everything? including the money i will have stashed??

have a maestro and a mbna visa so will bring both and shouldnt be too far from ATMs so i cud just keep going and taking small amounts out as i need it i guess?? this time i wont be experiencing too much of brazilian countryside unfortunately due to time restraints but if theres anything u cud suggest in the 2 weeks or so that we are there it would be cool, open to any suggestions as we have a free 15 days to spend wherever!!

thanks again for advice!

^^^^ Thought you were doing a back packing thing, tbh, so some of what I said probably doesn't really apply (particularly about the brasileiras, lol) If you're staying in nice hotels, taking cabs etc, you won't find it to be much more dangerous than Europe, tbh. Like I said though, keep your DPL handy and give it up straight away but don't just hand over everything else, keep your other stuff stashed somewhere sly. Most of the time, muggers are youngsters who want to get away quick so will be happy just to get 10 Reais.

I'd say learn some Portuguese still because basic Spanish might be alright to make yourself understood but you won't understand a word of what's being said. Despite being similar on paper, the two languages are completely different when spoken. While Lusophones can generally understand Spanish as it's pronunciation is phonetic and logical, it doesn't work the other way aroung as Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation is anything but. (EDIT: also, Brazilian people by and large aren't great with other languages but this will probably be different in Rio/Sao Paulo)

Carnaval is nuts in Sao Paulo, you'll love it. It's all about the Vai Vai, but you'll find that out when you get there.

Weather will be HOT in Rio and Sao Paulo (but especially Rio) at that time of year so don't get too much sun.

Don't really know Rio too well tbh but would say that Sao Paulo is better for nightlife, if dnb is your thing. Haven't been in Brazil for a while (about 5 years now) but as I recall, Jardins is a good neighbourhood for places likely to have big names on (as is Vila Olimpia, apparently) whereas Vila Madalena is more low key, funky bars. Some of the bigger clubs are frequented by rich people though so can be expensive and you may have to dress up to get in.

Foz do Iguacu is amazing but will take you about 15/16 hours at least by bus from Sao Paulo. Would reccomend a visit to Ilha Grande if you get chance though.

Watch out for the mosquitos, particularly in Rio. Would be fucking awful to get dengue fever for a week while you're out there. Rio has started getting quite bad for that sort of thing in summer over the last few years.

As for cash, if you're staying in Rio and Sao Paulo I'd say just take it out as and when is safer than carrying large sums. Keep your cash card well hidden though as Rio and Sao Paulo hoods have been known to carry out "sequestro flash" which essentially entails sticking you in the back of a car boot and forcing you to withdraw to your limit every day until it runs out and you get shot. Not terribly likely, but certain to ruin your trip.

I want to move. Somewhere hot where I shall be recognised as the deity I am and elevated to some weird status and get lots of alms-drugs.

I must google it.

lol love the last paragraph man!

would fuckin love to be doing the whole backpack tour thing of south america but this time its just not possible for a few reasons but its a good way to get a taste of the place for future reference

wont be staying anywhere too fancy but will be trying to get a hotel room thats clean and safe! thanks again for the advice, its kinda reassured me a little bit that alot of the cynical stuff on the net is slightly exaggerated

be sure to check back on this thread at the end of feb for some pics and stuff (assuming i make it home alive hehehe)

if ya can think of an extra stuff any time feel free to stick it up here!

Cocaine (sold in "papelzinhos") too, is abundant and cheap and, despite being heavily cut, is a whole lot stronger than what you've had in the UK

RA, email me your flight details as i'm coming along too!! :D

Red Arrow I didn't have you down as a panic merchant, you're worrying far too much. It's alwyas the bad stories which make it onto the internet, I woudn't listen to any of them.

Enjoy man!
