The Travel Thread - I am lovely and respectful to all in my path PLUR <3 xxxxx

Anyone reccommend a good travel backpack/website selling them cheaper than in store?

Im going around in circles with the huge number of different styles and brands available.

My current one cost $5 in Vietnam, it's brilliant and better made than the one I bought in a UK store. Still in perfect condition and has taken some battering, been all round SE Asia and S. America. What size you planning on taking? Don't get carried away like you'll resent it when you've to lug it around everywhere.

You don't need anything super fancy, it just has to not fall apart.

Im going to Aus to (and not come back, hopefully) so I have tons of stuff to take that I wont need in S.E Asia. I have already arranged storage in Bangkok and will just pick up my suitcase before I fly to Aus.

So ive decided im taking 2 suitcases and 2 backpacks. It has to be a backpack that can fit in hand luggage, and hold enough clothing etc for 9 weeks. Im thiking I could get a 40 llite backpack in the Qantas hand luggage. I have checked out dimensions etc and I will just half fill it at the airport and sort my stuff im taking around S.E Asia in Bangkok when I arrive.

Previously I was thinking about taking one huge backpack and not bothering with the suitcase, but its not practical for all the touring around and I will be wearing completly different clothes in Sydney than those when touring around S.E Asia.

Ive read about purchasing backpacks out there and I wasnt impressed. Reviews of backpacks falling apart 2 weeks into a trip. :\

You can tell just by looking at them if they're badly made and gonna fall to peices, just tug at all the fabric and cords to get an idea. Mines is a 'Jack Wolfskin' more than likely fake but the quality is top notch. I had a rucksack that I bought for £20 in Argos that I took to Aus, had fallen apart in less than 2 months and was ripped to fuck.

You might get a 40 litre in the hand luggage, not sure what Quantas rules are, usually based on dimensions of the bag. Sometimes they don't pay much notice and if you self check in online or at one of the computers at the airport no one will check it anyway.

I wouldn't go overboard with clothes for Asia, you can buy cheap tshirts etc out there everywhere and most places have cheap as fuck laundry services. It'll not break the bank if you need to keep washing stuff or buying new gear.

I have always heard that it is best to get a decent backpack if you are going to be doing a lot of walking with it as you don't want something horribly uncomfortable when you will have it on your back most of the days.

I'm gonna be looking for a decent backpack for south america soon, gonna get it now then use it on some smaller trips to wear it in so it will be perfect for my trip. Am looking forward to getting all my stuff and planning my trip. Just need to sort out my bad budgeting skills and get going on my saving.

Aye there's decent then there's just stupidly expensive though. You just need one that's well enough made, mines is comfortable to wear and in great condition and it cost only $5. You're not gonna get a better deal than that!

Don't get a bag that's too big either Mugz, 50litre max. You don't need loads of shit regardless of how long your travelling for, just wash your clothes every now and again.

I'm looking for a bag that will not be too big to carry around all day everyday when I am travelling but will also be big enough to carry the stuff that I need. Been looking at 70litre ones like this as they seem a perfect size but could be a lot heavier to carry around. 50litre just looks too small in the pictures. Gonna get myself to an outdoors shop and have a look and try some on and see how they feel.

Want one that would be perfect for the needs I outlined in my other thread too about getting rid of all my stuff so it could all fit in a rucksack like that.

70litre is too big IMO. You'll be tempted to fill it up and end up taking stuff you could have left at home.

I'll second that if u look confident then u should be cool but if u look a bit worried they may pick up onit.
As SHM n Spade have said the more space you got the more unnecessary stuff you will end up taking , be ruthless n really think do i actually forsee myself needing this when packing.

Valencia 2moro wohoo!

Get yourself to an outdoor shop and try it on. Its the only way you can get a true appreciation of what you need. I had a look at huge backpacks (70/80 litre), but decided I didnt want to carry such a huge amount around on my back all day.

I opted for a smaller 35+8 litre bag,,, http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/freeflow-35-plus-8-p151431

It all really depends on your circumstances I suppose. I will be taking a suitcase and a backpack, but im planning on going to Australia and living there forever ( if things work out). I have bought a storage space for my suitcase in Bangkok whch will hold city like clothes and naw your trampy travelling t-shirt sandal brigade clothing. ;)

Had an appointment with my doctor today and I have to get 2 injections for travelling in S.E. Asia. She was trying to tell me I have to get an injection for Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies aswell, but I told her where to get to.

I do however, have to buy Malaria tablets at about £80. Fuck it though id rather by £80 down than my trip wrecked and me in hospital fucked with Malaria.

Aye you don't need those injections nor do I bother with malaria tablets. They're horrible things, everyone who takes them ends up worse off on them - hallucinations, sick, always tired, the list goes on. Chances of catching malaria are pretty low and most people actually don't take them.

Trust me if you're cutting about Sydney in summer you'll be wanting to wear tshirts, shorts and flipflops.

Whats the best option for finance when travelling between thailand, laos, cambodia, and vietnam.

Im thinking about purchasing a small amount of each currency before leaving the UK. But im also thinking that I dont want to be carrying money on me that I wont use until im in vietnam 5 weeks or so into my trip.

How do you pay for your visa when you arrive in the country if you dont have any of the local currency? For example arriving in Laos from Thailand. I would have to purchase the local currency before arriving in order to purchase my visa. Any suggestions?

I will be taking my credit/debit cards, and I am aware of the ATM's in all the major cities.

In Laos you are only allowed about 60 quid a time (one a day) from a cahpoint (which can be hard to find). 60 quid is loads though in Laos.

We arrived at Luang Prabang airport without cash and visas. How cool is Laos? They allowed my g/f in, behind security, unescorted, to go to the cashpoint to get the visa money.

You're gonna love Laos.

Don't take loads of difference currencies just take US Dollars, they are accepted in Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia as a second currency and often preffered over the local. You can use it to pay for visas at the border and most border crossings will have money exchanges either 'official' places or folk standing around who'll exchange for you.

For anything else just use ATMs when you have access to them and be aware that smaller places might not have any banks so have a some spare USD in the wallet just in case. I went to Kep & Kampot in Cambodia not realising there was no where to get cash, didn't even realise there was no bank till a Scottish guy I met told me. Luckily I had taken out $100 in Phnom Pehn so had a bit of cash on me, could have still been stuck their now. :D

Left Scotland 1 week ago and thought it was about time I relaxed for a night and spent a bit of time on Bluelight.

In the past week I have,,,,

Nearly been run over on the steets of Bangkok too many times to remember.

Went to a ladyboy show.

Lived it up like a G in a 5 star hotel. ;)

Went on a river/canal boat cruise through the slums of bangkok.

Met plenty of really cool thai people.

Ragin at this no drinking policy becasue of the election. Culdae buy a carry out on a Satuday night. 8o

Went on a night safari in Chaing Mai. Held a white tiger (baby).

Today- done the elephant treck, they are fuckin huge and I thought i was going to fall off all the time. Plus the elephant I was on was wide as fuck and bullying the other elephants. =D

Then went on a 9 kilometer treck through thick jungle. If im honest I got caught out a bit the treck; was harder than expected, but I did visit a real thai village up Thailands largest mountain. Also a bit of river rafting aswell.

Overall Id say i prefer Chiang Mai to Bangkok. Bangkok was cool and I stayed in both the 5 star and Koh San Road. But I wasnt impressed with the Koh San Road patter. Too many gimped up Brits living up to the sterotype (ignorant and arrogant twats on a Gap Yeeeaaaa) talking about mental nights out they had with Harry and Nathan. Plus its overpriced as fuck, kinda like a holiday in Magaluf when your 17. I was not impressed atall. The local Thai people I met were laughing at this gimped up drunken english cunto in a pub and were the most sound people I met whilst there.

The above part I did not like, but overall im having a fucking great time meeting tons of people and doing loads of fun stuff.

Overpriced in Koh San Road...naaah! It's the cheapest place in BKK to buy a beer in a bar, 50 baht was the normal price for a bottle of Chang when I was there 2 years ago, the only place you'll find them cheaper is 7/11. It's a total circus down there like but I think it's fun, you can sit out on the street in one of them wee outdoor bars on a plastic stool, drink a bucket of thai whisky and just watch the world go by and everybodys happy to chat regardless if whether they know you or not, few gap year middle class backpacker wanker around but you can just ignore them.

Sounds like you're making the most of it. The river rafting is it like white water rafting down rapids or just slowly floating down a scenic river?

You been trying the local food? Best in the world by far.

Canna wait to get back to Thailand. :D

This is the travel thread mate and going to the off licence doesn't count so jog on. ;)

i've been looking into walking across America quite a bit lately, something i've always wanted to do and soon i'll have the time and dosh to do it. Delaware to California. got a few naughty things about drugs on my record though so i'm not sure how applying for a visa would work out :|
