The Stolen Generation

The whole idea of “true land owners” is ludicrous – if the native population of Australia had been white there would be no such outcry, after all if they had been white perhaps the history would read more like that of conquered European nations... I'd like to see the Welsh or Scottish rise up again and turf out all those that aren't true bread Celtic whilst rejecting the crown and the people who have settled there.

:\

Well....quick history lesson. "Wales" is the Roman word for the country I live in. Welsh people use the word "Cymru". This is because "Wales" means foreigner. The indigenous people of GB who fled Roman invasion were pushed back into the corners of "Wales", thus becoming foreigners in their own land. Just like the Aborigines. Perhaps the difference is the 2000 year gap in-between.
Its not just a case of winning land back. Cultures and languages get crushed. It may be 2000 years but Wales is right now returning to its cultural heritage with strong emphasis on the re-birth of its language.
We all like to think we live in a civilised world but often take no time to think what civilisation means. Sometimes it is civil to say sorry and work towards reparation of perceived wrongs.
As Ghandi (Gandhi?) said when asked what he thought of western civilisation,
"I think it would be a good idea"
Syntech, Insane Platypus....I think he meant you.

^^^ aye, I know the history well - I grew up in England with welsh, irish and scottish cousins, I have a strongly celtic lineage - it doesn't detract at all from the point I was making.

I was pretty worried before i opened this thread... didn't want to be confronted with a bunch of ignorant views that would make me disappointed in BL. But no! So many ppl have obviously thought about this and managed to see thru the shit the Australian government spins (hell, after tampa, etc, i have no idea how anyone believes Howard).
I see an apology as just the first, symbolic step. It's about acknowledging what happened and acknowledging it was wrong. It would be a sign of respect to the first people of Australia. It wouldn't begin to address the myriad of problems indigenous people face today, but it would be a sign of respect. I mean, the figures speak for themselves... hardships faced are hardly exaggerated. There is a really good small book/pamphlet that I got for a friend of mine a few years ago, called something like "dispelling the myths". it went thru all the bullshit myths about aboriginal ppl and what they receive, gave the facts. was good in cutting thru the misperceptions, particularly those pushed by hanson. if anyone can get their hands on it, it's definately worth a read.
peace

well after reading all your posts, all i have to say is SYNTECH - im with you all the fcking way - great post. If you want to hang around feeling sorry for ATSI people then do so. For the more reality orientated of us all, what happended in the past, cant be changed, so get over it and live your life

get over it? like i said before if it was YOU that had suffered all the hardship you wouldnt be the one that was saying "get over it" PFFFFTTTTTT

people need education on this topic OBVIOUSLY

a_muse ...i love you too =D

thanks for all the support.
and as for the suffering, i could say i've suffered too, but i'm over it. i dont hate romanian ppl and i dont see why i should be treated differently.

my whole utopian view on the world is give everyone the opportunity - to get an education, a job, to travel etc - and let us CHOOSE. its got nothing to do with race. if we could get over the silly bickering and let the past stay where it belongs, it'd be a whole lot easier.

so does that mean when a wrong has been done you can just let it go and say "well it happened ages ago, it doesn't matter now"

*rolls eyes to all but Syntech*

if you are all so passionate about this, rather than sitting in your university degrees and working to fund your social life/or bludging of your parents and student allowance, how about you go out and actually do something about it, start a movement or a cult or whatever you want, but dont sit here playing the perfect citizen by giving us all a serve because we dont really care. Put you money where your mouth is and do something about it.

^^^ people can form views without necessarily having to go and enforce what they advocate. that's just naive. if i campaigned actively for every cause that i believed in, or actually went out and did something about them all, i'd probably need about ten more lifetimes to actually get it all done. you have to pick your battles.

my apologies Backo, im sure there are many in here who would slightly agree with me, Syntech being the thread starter he got the claim - but welcome aboard and please hand in your care factor rating of zero at the door!!!

*lol*

ASSumptions galore. Don't try and overanalyse people you don't know.
