this thread baffles me.
and it makes me glad - and here's a sentence i haven't ever said before - that i don't live in australia anymore.
i just can't fathom the puerility of an argument that fails to take into account the socioeconomic contrasts that have led to a distinct line of development that has - whether you like to admit it or not - disadvantaged the aboriginal population.
to deny this problem exists, or even worse - to claim it is of their own making - demonstrates not only a remarkable lack of foresight & historical awareness, but a fundamental ignorance which i just find incredible. it really baffles me, and it shakes my faith in the future of an australia which remains largely isolated from the world.
I aint going to apologise for making Australia a land that is so great.
this is the kind of prevailing attitude that is so disturbing. i really struggle to come to terms with how you can actually say that, let alone believe it. you, personally, are responsible for making australia the fantastic, world-leading nation that it is today: and furthermore, you don't have any reservations about the methods used (rape, institutionalised exterminationism, family breakup & distribution) or the people who suffered.
you know what's mildly amusing about this situation? statements such as the above are what makes australia so loathed. i hate to say it, but there are an awful lot of people i know living in australia who can't stand the endemic racism that infests the country. absolutist, ignorant & self-congratulatory bullshit merely makes your 'great' country our collective embarassment.
'one smart fellow' indeed. i'm not sure whether smart in this case is supposedly indicative of ANY kind of higher intellectual function, but i severely doubt it. the only thing more disturbing than blanket generalisations & pointless reiteration of tired supremacist arguments is the misinformed cheerleading from the sidelines. it really does you & your country a great disservice.
yes thats sad, but its not like the younger generations are displaced.
sure. that's about as myopic as is humanly possible - these people, even though their previous generations have been systematically killed, abused & segregated, are still afforded exactly the same chances in life as any white australian? and you really believe this?
they are still disadvantaged. and here's why: because of the people who posted in this thread. i mean, i'd hate to cast doubt on any ambitions held by those who feel incapable of compassion; good luck with your lives, because you WILL need it... the fact remains that aboriginal people have to put up with the self-inflated acrimonious ill-informed wank that colours people's prejudices EVERY DAY.
it's easy to sit behind a computer screen in a big city & talk about problems which you'll never have to encounter. it's easy to take the egotistical, insensetive & facile view that 'i didn't do anything wrong, so why should i give a fuck?'. it's easy to allow prejudices to become convictions, it's easy to laugh along at the racist jokes, and it's easy to sweep it all under the carpet & pretend it doesn't exist.
it takes real courage - the kind of courage that made australia the country where people escaped to to get a fair go - to stand up against this bullshit. i must say i am both shocked & saddened by the opinions i have seen so proudly, so thoroughly endorsed in this thread. it's no wonder the government won't even say sorry - here, in what one would assume to be a bastion of social liberalism (after all, we are a drug discussion board) - to see such intolerance & prejudice so happily displayed on bluelight makes me worry for australia's future.
how hard is it to say sorry on a national level? what will it cost you? will you have to surrender your backyard to hordes of natives? good god no. it merely requires a semblance of national compassion, a sense of duty that outweighs any so-called patriotic agenda. do you know that south africans look down on australians because of their inability to acknowledge the problems of their past? this from a country that imposed apartheid; that should give you a good glimpse at what happens when people aren't prepared to examine issues from anything other than one-dimensional, exclusivist terms of reference.
this will be my last post in this forum. mods, i'd appreciate it if you could leave this intact please.
to those who expressed such intolerance: god forbid anything bad should happen to you. in the hopelessly optimistic spirit of leading by example, i'd like to say that if you ever experience any problems or drug-related issues, feel free to drop into The Dark Side. the posters in that forum will be there to help you, no matter who you are or where you're from.
i just wish the same could be said of australians today.
