I'm out of drugs to do for Xmas.

Actually, one christmas I had a fentanyl patch I liberated from my aunt--now that was a pleasant three-day buzz perfect for dealing with family. Otherwise I just stand around mostly, hoping relatives don't talk to me.

What do folks do for summer-christmas? Do RSA folks also chop down trees and stick them in their living room and cover them with shredded aluminum?

Indeed we do! One Xmas (I came from a very poor home) we didn't have money for an Xmas tree so my dad stopped on the side of the freeway and just cut one down. He bought it home and it was the best tree ever!

No Meth for you this Xmas or are you quitting?
I have some 2-CB

You could probably make a good mead, but I get the point you want to deter yourself from it. Still keep it in glass as it will be eating the plastic and you don't want that in your body.

Yeah, so many expensive liquors are nothing but a fancy label, plenty of good brands that are comparable, or just plain better than some of the high dollar stuff.

Take Johnny Walker Blue Label for example. I've seen single pours cost up to $30, and it's blended, not even single malt. Some years ago I was attending a birthday dinner for a friend at a Mexican restaurant, and noticed they had a bottle of the ol Blue Label. Having never tried it due to the price, and honestly surprised to see it among all the tequila, I inquired as to what they wanted for it. Our server had to go ask, they'd yet to open the bottle. Upon returning she told me quite apologetically that it was very expensive. I told her that I was aware, but wanted to know the price. "Six dollars A SHOT, sir... expensive." BOOOIIING!

Upon coming to my senses, I began ordering glasses of it neat, which were near doubles, thank you Mr. Bartender. I proceeded to tell a couple friends, and after a couple more visits, the bottle was gone. They never got anymore, I don't even wanna know what they lost on that one. All that said, as tasty as it was, I've had single malt Scotch that was just as good at a fraction on the price. It remains the best blended one I've tried, and is light years beyond the low end Johnny Walker.

Bulleit Rye is a great example of a killer rye bourbon for the price. Much better than regular Bulleit (same price), and beats many of the marked up bourbon I hear talked up.

One thing I've found with liquor is that prices can vary quite a bit. I've found a nearby liquor store that sells a lot of vodkas and whiskey's for really cheap compared to a lot of other places.

Never tried the blue label, but I wouldn't want to pay more than 30ish a bottle for something blended. Speaking of Bourbons, I think Gentleman Jack is hands down the best value bourbon Ive found. It's overpriced someoplace, but I can get a 750 for about 30 bucks or less. Not a cheap bourbon, but I personally like it better than any of the 50+ dollar bottles I've tried. I'm not normally a bourbon drinker, so maybe I just can't appreciate the more expensive stuff the way I should, but gentleman jack is fantastic IMO. Way better than the regular Jack Daniels

Eh, I don't believe there's a way someone should or shouldn't appreciate liquor, or beer, etc. If you enjoy something, then that's all that matters and I'd imagine you probably agree (though please correct me if I'm wrong). Totally agree about not paying much for a blended Scotch, I truly don't understand why some people will pay the outrageous pricetag on JW Blue, Black, or whatever. But hey, maybe I will luck out again one day and find another joint that has no idea what's going on like that Mexican restaurant and can drink it on the cheap. No hesitation.

As far as Gentleman Jack, I'm not much of a fan, although I do like it a lot more than any other sort of Jack Daniel's I've had, and true that price does vary a bit, but usually it's a bargain for the price, regardless of my opinion of it.

I know you said you aren't Mr. Bourbon, but give Angel's Envy a spin sometime if you see it. Another standout imo, especially for how relatively inexpensive it can be. Although it's not 90 proof like the Bulleit, it doesn't take long to get the ol head warm.

All that said, I'm heading to the bar (mostly to socialize, I'm not a heavy drinker anymore). Likely go for a sour beer of some sort, maybe a Westbrook Gose.

I've been on page five of Pale King for about two years now.

I tried it when I got hired at the IRS, then remembered just setting the book there fictionally was so awful and boring he hung himself without finishing it.

I figured I'd wait till I went full time somewhere else.

But Satan's the protagonist! You should try it in the original Olde English. Maybe with some Olde English.

(no, I've never read it)

Amazingly I've not read Milton.

Have you ever read the FULLLLL (five books worth ) of The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas?

Excellent!

I'm really intrigued by what you might have on your list, tubbs. (All of you guys, really).

I do read a lot, but usually articles and essays, non-fiction. Takes me for goddamned ever to get through an actual novel.

Seven hours left to prepare your sacrifices in my honor.

Today is the longest night, the sun the lowest in the sky; and the anniversary of my birth. (The moon is also gone, but that's just coincidence.)

So go forth into the darkness, my children. Do some hippie write-your-complaints-on-paper and burn-it stuff, or go full pagan and stick a Nicholas Cage poster in a giant PierOne Wicker Laundry basket and set it ablaze. Let the bees out!

Do it in my name.

AMen.

Happy Belated Birthday Scrofula! I hope you had a great day/night. Hope you get some drugs for Christmas! Lol

I enjoy non-fiction as well, Scrof. Last NF book I started was Camus: Notebooks 1935-1951. Great stuff, and very approachable, whether or not you've read his fiction (also great).

A non-fiction favorite that springs to mind would be Capote's In Cold Blood. Interesting to me that not one, but two films about Capote came out in the same year. The one featuring Hoffman got all the attention, especially with his death not too long afterwards, but Infamous, with Sandra Bullock as Harper Lee. And Daniel Craig as one of the killers is very good as well.

I've only read excerpts of Capote, but always got a weird facetious feeling from them. I think his credit is more for starting a whole genre of True-Crime Journalism/Entertainment.

As for Camus*, he shot a guy, didn't love his mommy much, so the jury decided
he was guilty. The end. I'm sure there's some philosophical wonderment in there but I sure missed it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to shit on your selections. I've got two books on the Enlightenment I'm slowly going through. Just pop history of the time, one focus on exploration, the other on the religious/cultural shifts.

ETA: *The stranger, not Camus. In the only story I know.
