The scent of Angels Trumphet flowers?

I may be in the wrong forum to ask this, but what do Angel's Trumpets flowers or even Brugmansia flowers smell like?
Do they smell something similar to Jasmine or lavenderish-like scent?

Can anyone compare what it smells like to any similar flowers?

I once (in my previous threads) picked some flowers and scent was very heavy on odor so I had to throw them away because I scared that even the scent can cause poisoning. But the problem is, I cannot recall the smell anymore.

Thanks

A very beautiful aroma definitely!
Hard to compare, but I think Jasmine and lavender is a good direction...only its much more pungent, perfume like in its intensity, I love my daturas ! My largest will flower twenty plus per night, so awesome, the smell permeates my front yard and porch :-)

The compounds in brugmansia/datura that cause hallucinations are not volatile under normal circumstances. You can't be harmed by smelling the flowers - just by handling the plant or ingesting it. Or if you inhale smoke from a burning plant.

So just to confirm, I CANNOT be harmed just by smelling the flowers?
And what about touching them WITHOUT them being bruised?

I picked the flowers some time ago near my neighbors garden, but I was afraid that the scent of those flowers will cause me to hallucinate or even cause death. So I quickly threw those away. I even used scissors to cut the flowers off being also afraid that the toxins will absorb through my skin.

So just to confirm, is it OK to pick the flowers and to smell them?

Anyways, I will bring a jar with a lid and put the flowers in that so it does not overwelm my room.

The oils will absorb through your skin to some degree, this is a concern for gardeners of these plants..but I handle my plants without gloves and have never noticed anything near a toxic effect. If you harvested or riped up the foliage you could adsorb a sizeable amount through the juices, but I don't think you have you worry about coming into contact with the leaves or flowers briefly.

I have read that the smell can be intoxicating in large doses, like someone in a closed area with many flowers but I can't say for sure if its that potent.

Yep. If you're not exposing your skin to datura juice for long periods of time you'll be fine.

Even if the plant is bruised, just wash your hands with soapy water aftwerwards and you'll be fine.

Well, I picked off a few flowers with scissors (not with bare hands) and put them in a jar with the lid capped on it.
Im afraid to open the jar now. I may do it outside. with more ventilation. There only 2 flowers without any leaves.

There getting moist in the jar now. Should I just open the cap and let them dry inside the jar outside in the sun?

Im just afraid to open the cap now....:(

But if Im opening outside, there should not be any effects on me from the smell?

I heard a myth long ago: if you sleep under a Brugmansia, you'll have vivid dreams. The same if you put a few flowers under your pillow.

I've never tried it, anyway.

It's what they say in Columbia. There they use scopolamine to trick people into doing things they don't want to (think extreme ruffies), and have done so historically for a long time. I.E When a king died, his mistresses were tricked into walking into his grave and then being buried alive. Currently prostitutes use it to steal the belongings of wealthy men, or for rape of pretty women. With the plant material, only a tea or smoked flowers would give the (un)desired effects. With scopolamine itself however, it just needs to be in proximity of you. They're drugging people by asking for directions and putting a map under their nose.

But if you're anxious I see no harm in only opening it outside, this is indeed some dangerous stuff. Actually, with you being this worried, why do you even plan on having the flowers?

Ummmmm.....Well, sleeping under the plant may cause those dreams, but the question is.....Will you ever wake up from those dreams....??????

Anyways, I ended thowing those away. I was just too paranoid. Thanks for all the advise given here.

Yes you would wake up lol
These plants are amazingly powerful, but not potent enough to kill you from smelling them.

Enjoy the smell, or leave the flowers alone lol...you're tripping yourself out friend :-)
