I was one of the walkers... parked my car right by the last exit and hiked it in. I will never see that again, 30,000 hippies marching past cows and mulch piles. (I will also never see a mid-interstate party like that again, nitrous, weed, and cases of beer everywhere.) It was a statement of love, it really charged the weekend in a way that simply driving in would not. I'm too lazy to write up a report, but I generally agree with your assessment of the music. The first night was fun while I was there, but not something I really need to hear again. I think the emotional peak of the weekend for me was during the split>ghost (right after trey said, "I need to blow off some steam.") They never really got that same raw intensity and emotion up in the third set. Course I was also the most rocked during the second set.
It's so hard to explain to everyone who never saw phish live what they missed exactly. I can hear some of it on the recordings, but you really did have to be there. Sigh. Well, there will be other bands that have the magic. Maybe someday there will even be another band to reach the level of the dead and phish, although there will never be another phish. They've impacted my life in such a positive way. Maybe it's time for me to pick up that guitar...
