The officially Asian Cup thread.

Guess we will see tonight.

I will be wrapped if Mick does play but its not looking good apparently. I know he was pretty gutted last night.

lol what a surprise ;). i was actually supporting iraq at 3-1 hoping they'd put that goal in at 75mins just so oz football can wake the hell up. arnold chastising them is apt, but of course he's as much to blame. at least knowing that he's as good as sacked i might be able to see nicky carle start come monday

i feel ashamed to admit im a fan of Australian Football...

i honestly am lost for words...

yes we can blame arnie all we want (and i agree, he isnt an international coach) but, he wasnt one of the losers out on the field...

digusting!

Yeah totally agree mate.

One thing though makes me wonder if Arnold is more to blame than you think.

At least some of the players have been told so many lies by Arnold that they have no longer any respect for him.

Lieing to players is a big no no.........and if its happenned to a few that I know of then maybe its been happenning to others as well.

well... i just read the report again on smh...

a few things to put forward

Viduka - i must admit, the big fuckin log played half decent, BUT... that being said, i still dont think he deserves to be there, i have never really been a fan of him when he is wearing the gold jersey...

Replacing Sterjovski... the prick didnt get the ball against oman because the team were fucked, and when the ball did go down the right side... Emerton would leave his spot to go walkabouts.... it was harsh to replace him for fuckin holman when (to me) he didnt do much wrong

i honestly think kinsorbo should be black listed from international football... he might as well try and trace his roots and play for the team his mum was born in... coz well, he should never be given the privledge of wearing the gold again!

Arnie has blooded a lot of these players from the younger squads... but its time for him to move on

i think Kosi being the assistant coach isnt much better either... not offence to the argo little fuck, but he is from the same generation as Arnie and well fuck... if the FFA havent learnt that (i hate to admit) Aussies cant really coach football (besides super Culina) then they never will

They gotta spend money to make money as such, and even though we couldnt have Guus, we did have a lot of options for other managers, what ever happened to fuckin Holliuer?

me and mazdan both have mates in the aussie side.... none of which have been given any time really to prove their worth... To my mates defence, his is young and is there for experience, and now that i think of it, so is mazdan's but... FUCK... what is there to lose, fair enough, they dont have experience, but they have fuckin heart coz they want to fuckin get a solid spot in the fuckin side... fair enough, both of us would be VERY biast towards them playing... and i know its a different game

but when you put a young fella into a starting side of league, or most likely any fuckin other sport... they will work the cunt out making sure they play their best game...

when they were BOTH picked for the world cup squad, they were there because they are great players...

For us to go through, obviously we need to rely on other results, and us being thailand, Arnie has come out and said their are going to be major changes... its the story of too little too late... they are going to miss Lucas Neill at the back i assume because of his double yellow/red which means, even though he has been playing like shit... their back 4, are nothing now...

this is how i would like to see the team for the game...

Goalie - Schwarzer
Left Back - Carney (they talked about using him there but never did)
Centre Backs - Beauchhamp and Kinsorbo (even though i said the cunt is fucked, we have no choice)
Right back - Emerton
Defensive Mid - Grella
Left Mid - Kewell
Right Mid - Culina
Centre Mid - TIM FUCKIN CAHILL (you dumb cunt arnie, yes, he is a super sub... yes he has had FUCK ALL game time recently, but the cunt when on make a difference)
Strikers - Sloth and Holman (sloth = viduka)

but... if this was the stepping stone for world cup 2010... what do we have to look forward to, and it hurt me to write that... but fuck...

Viva la Iraq!!!!

Whooo-fuckin-hooo!

<3 watching Australia lose, one more and hopefully we won't have to put up with the sort of shameless bandwagon jumping we saw last World Cup!

We might be able to kill them in their hundreds-and-thousnads, but they can still kick our arse on a soccer pitch :D

Thousands of Iraqis poured into the street, dancing, chanting and firing shots into the air in celebration today of the Asian Cup win over Australia, a country many here see as an occupation force.

Iraq stunned Australia with a 3-1 victory in the Group A match in Thailand, putting the pre-tournament favourite on the verge of a humiliating early exit from the competition.

Shortly after the referee blew the final whistle, sporadic gunfire could be heard in central Baghdad.

People who had been glued to their television sets dashed into the streets of the capital to celebrate - a welcome reason to cheer for residents who live in daily fear of attacks and suffer from unemployment as high as 70 per cent.

In Baghdad's central neighbourhood of Karradah, hundreds of young men waved Iraqi flags and chanted slogans supporting their soccer team.

The fans were on motorcycles, in cars and even on top of buses. Some took off their T-shirts and waved them. Drivers stopped their vehicles in the middle of the street and went out to dance.

"Despite all of what is happening, the most important thing for us is Iraq. Soccer unites Iraq. Long live Iraq," a man shouted from inside his car before driving away.

School teacher Salem Issam, 24, said he watched the game with his family. He said the victory was great because Iraqis need good news.

"Iraq has become known all over the world, and international television stations show images of explosions, killings, kidnappings and violence, but today we are happy, even if it is for one hour," said Salem.

"We ask God to rescue us from the crisis we are living."

Australia, a close US ally, has 1,000 troops inside Iraq and another 600 providing air and naval support in the region.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard sent 2,000 troops to support US and British forces in the Iraq invasion in 2003.

One Australian soldier has been killed since the war began, as has an Australian-British dual citizen who was flying with the British air force.

"The game today was some kind of a challenge because we were playing with a country that has military presence here and at the same time a country known to have a strong team" said lawyer Mohammed al-Kharasani, 52.

"Regrettably, the Australian team played looking down to us since they are an occupying country."

"Today's game was a mixture of sports and politics," said Fares Abdul-Latif, an Iraqi athletics teacher.

"This game proves to the world that life is going on and so does sports in Iraq, despite all the wounds of war."

I take it you mean Millsy?
The lad is the single greatest talent Australia has at the moment. I'm a Bay 23 regular and the lad is heads and shoulders above everyone else. Even as young as he is I'd have him over Kisnorbo, Thwaite and probably Beauchamp. Millsy sure as hell wouldn't have done that last night.

<3 <3 <3 Millsy <3 <3 <3 <3

Tell him to stay at Sydney at least one more season. Kthxbai

I'm glad Iraq won. The fact that Iraq is making the news in this positive way is some nice minty refreshment.

Apparently they were going to go hard against the Australians because of their support of the US. Who says the war in Iraq hasn't made the world a more dangerous place for Australians =D

I heard Iceland is the shit. The people go out drinking all night- and when they leave the bar at 3-4 in the am. the sun is still out. That sounds like my kinda place. Endless alcohol induced debauchery- sounds like the tits to me.

The Iraqi's must be pretty happy with themselves as you certainly couldn't class our team as easy beats

he is very happy in sydney...

he knows he is worth a lot more elsewhere in the world... but... as stupid as this sounds... his family and friends are here, and he cant be fuckin happier

the little fuck has the world ahead of him, as long as he can stay fit before the olympics he is going to be a household name

they are just grooming him into what he should be, and one day when he goes out for the fuckin roos with the captain band on.. we are just going to sit there in shock still pissing up and abusing him

Oh man: I only saw the goals and a few other highlights, but the Aussies were really, really bad in that game. Unbelievable defending.

Given the many criticisms of the coach in this thread, could we say that the World Cup success was down to Guus, maybe?

To a degree.

Australia under Guus vastly overperformed. The likes of Culina, Grella and Emerton became worldbeaters.
Australia under Arnold are underperforming. Not only are those guys not playing above themselves but the players who actually are world-class (Neill, Viduka) are playing well below themselves.

The fault with the players lies somewhere in the middle.
