Well his captaincy has always been questionable. I think they have a lot of problems integrating an isolated group of people and he has probably one of the hardest jobs in the cricketing world.

It only takes one innings though and Lara will be back in form. He showed signs of it the other day, albeit few, and was unlucky to be given out in the first innings. That really was a match changing moment. But it's only one test down - they have to work a lot harder though.

It was nice to see Bracken having a really good spell - that was some damn fine swing bowling. Not so convinced about Lee, he's still a bit erratic. Mind you, ... he doesn't need to be on the spot every delivery at that speed.

It's good to see Ponting in fine form though. He's also great to watch ... and in my mind, doesn't get the attention he deserves.

viv richards hit a ball out of the WACA once and mark waugh hit a ball on top of the Lillee Marsh stand, i think they may have been just as big but who knows.

its outrageous selecting someone like watson then not bowling him, what are we thinking? and now symonds is in the mix? the mind boggles. its luvky we are up against some pretty average competition or our batting line up will be very fragile. i have supported katich for a long time (being from WA) but his run may be coming to an end. i think it may be a confidence problem. having said that, his test average is a reasonable 36, while the 'superkid' clarkes is only 38 (insert sarcastic tone here). why arent questions being asked about his form?

thr you are right about ponting, he is going to have a huge summer. he isnt my favourite player or captain but you cannot doubt his ability.

Questions are being asked about Clarke ...

I think they're both quite gifted and hold a lot for the future. I think at their age that it is right to be a bit more patient.

personally i would fuck of watson. I don't rate him as much at all. He is definately batting allrounder, his bowling is not up to test standard. If I was a selector I would probably not persist with trying to find an allrounder because the possible candidates are just not up to it. When Langer returns I would probably retain Hussey and bat him at 4 or 5 and push Clarke down the order or possibly recall Martyn. I think his axing was rediculous. If Katich or clarke's form doesn't pick up soon i would drop one of em for martyn. I cant see them dumping clarke as he is tagged as a massive future prospect.
The other option is to omit the allrounder for a genuine bowler which is definately possible because we do bat a long way down thanx to gilly and our tailenders in warn and lee and even bracken to an extent can hold a bat, however Australia has never really been inclined in recent times to play the extra bowler and i guess that is because we have had the luxury of mcgrath and warne, 2 of the best bowlers to ever play the game

I still don't understand why the angry little man doesn't deserve to be selected.
9 wickets in his last test match with Australia, and he doesn't get picked.

Why the hell not? Like you said beech, we've got a decent/long enough batting order.

EDIT: Oh, I'm talking about McGill btw. :\

agreed with regards to mcgill. i thought the biggest insult flung his way was the most recent trip to the subcontinent when they brought either cameron white or james hopes (i cant rememeber) as the second spinner. it was outrageous. i know its all about the experience but come on, on turning dusty wickets that are going to be prepared for spin why not bring the second best leggie in the world?

with regards to watson, i am also not a fan beech. a lot of people point out that flintoff didnt really mature into the player he is today until after 40 or so tests, but the fact remains he was still one of their better players when he wasnt playing so well which is certainly not the case for watson. did you see him in the first innings trying to go at it with fidel edwards? he was such a moron, didnt focus on the game at all, thought it was a big joke and promptly got out. martyn certainly deserves his spot back, the middle order looks so fragile without him. he has scored 100, 80 and 76 in the last three ING matches and has looked good in both of the pura cup matches so far but has been unlucky and been dismissed in the early 20s.

ohhhhh yes he's a Victorian

Australia Drops Katich for Cricket Test; Hodge, Symonds Return
Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Australia dropped Simon Katich for next week's second cricket Test against the West Indies in Hobart, recalling batsman Brad Hodge and all-rounder Andrew Symonds to the squad.

Katich, who scored just three runs in his past four Test innings, is the second middle-order batsman after Damien Martyn to be axed from the top-ranked team since Australia lost the Ashes to England in September. Hodge will take his place.

``Simon's form has not been what he expects of himself and we felt it was time to give someone else an opportunity,'' Chairman of Selectors Trevor Hohns said in a statement. ``Brad Hodge has been a very high-scoring player for Victoria for many years and we believe he can do that at Test level.''

Hodge, 30, was picked in Australia's Test squad for the Ashes and October's Super Series against the rest-of-the-world. He has yet to play a Test, serving as 12th man four times. He has scored 12,502 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 46.30, with a top score of 302 not out.

In the other change to the team that beat West Indies by 379 runs in the first Test, Symonds replaces fellow all-rounder Shane Watson, who had shoulder surgery two days ago that will rule him out for the rest of the summer. Opener Justin Langer, who missed the first test, is still unavailable because of a rib injury.

Symonds, 30, has played only two Tests, against Sri Lanka in March 2004, scoring 53 runs at an average of 13.25, and taking one wicket. He has played 127 one-day internationals for Australia.

He smashed 163 runs off 183 balls for Queensland in an interstate Pura Cup match last week.

``Symonds has been in red hot-form with the bat and his medium pace and off-spin adds a lot of options to the bowling attack,'' Hohns added.

The second Test starts Nov. 17.

AUSTRALIA: Ricky Ponting (captain), Adam Gilchrist (vice- captain), Nathan Bracken, Michael Clarke, Matthew Hayden, Brad Hodge, Michael Hussey, Brett Lee, Stuart MacGill, Glenn McGrath, Andrew Symonds, Shane Warne.

Symonds has been making runs and bowling well for QLD but he is still not up to Test cricket. He is a rapid scoring batsman but we have enough of those in the team, what is needed is a solid player willing to build an innings. His bowling is effective in 1st class cricket and in 1 Dayers but I don't think it is up to Test standard. He may do well but if he does its not because he is up to scratch but more that the Windies are not.
I can understand Katich being dropped and Hodges inclusion is warranted, since he has been playing well for a long time, however I still think Martyn should be in the side. This Test will be very interesting because I would imagine that whoever performs the best out of Hodge and Hussey will retain their spot when Langer returns. That is unless Symonds plays like a dog and they opt to keep both Hodge and Hussey at the expense of Symonds but I think this is unlikely as the selectors seem set on trying to turn a 2nd rate alrounder into a test player.

geez, symonds playing test cricket? that is not cool. i really hope that if clarke has a few more bad tests he also gets dropped.

our middle order is gong to be very very fragile

Bring Martyn back. He should never have been dropped in the first place.

I hate Trevor Hohns.

yeah bye bye Katich. Shame cos he isn't a bad player at all but yeah is in ordinary for even though its only been something like 10 Tests since he made a Ton. Many wouldn't consider that too dire but yes this is Australian cricket. Yeah its a joke that a bloke like Symonds gets a game of Test cricket. I really hope they opt for McGill and hold on to Bracken and don't bother with the selection of an allrounder but highly doubtful this will happen. Symonds knocked up a big rapid ton against SA, that does not make him good enough to play Test cricket. He said he wouldn't adjust his style for the test either so basically he will go out there and slog. Thats not what the team needs, we have Gilly to do that and he is good enough to do it at Test level whereas Symonds is not much more than a slogger at Test level. Fingers crossed that Hussey and Hodge play well and Symonds fails, that wouldn't leave the selectors with much choice other than to drop Symonds if he yet again proves he isn't up to scratch. If Hodge and Hussey do well I would imagine it would make it very hard for Martyn to return but if one of em fails a few times i guess ya never know, langer could return and of them gets dropped along with symonds and martyn come back into the team. Many possible permutations i guess.

Man I hope hogde bats as well next week as he is now 18 4's and 3 6's 133 n/o.

Symonds will be unstoppable against the Windies flat attack. Katich (and clarke) should have dined out on them but didn't. If runs are so hard why aren't Warne and lee now considered allrounders.

Have just been watching the ING Cup match between the Redbacks and Western Australia and it's had me thinking just how much i miss Dizzy [42 off 49 balls, second highest score in a poor batting display of 190 for Sth Australia] in the test squad. If he was stiil in top form with the ball and in the side i don't think the likes of Watson or Symonds would get a look in but alas. I wonder what sort of figures he would have to produce this season to be considered for a recall or if he has forever fallen from grace with the selectors.

I reckon if dizzy regains form they will have him back in the Test side. He isn't overly old and has a load of experience and they will need someone to take over from mcgrath as main strike bowlerwhen he eventually retires. He has too much experience and been too good to just discard without further thought. Regardless of how good our other bowlers are, we are going to be in a spot of bother when mcgrath and warne retire. I doubt anyone will fill the gap left completely. We basically have the best spinner and best fast bowler in the world and nobody is going to immediately fill that gap.
I hope Dizzy returns so that maybe the selectors stop persisting with very average allrounders.

Bump

the second test started today, so I figured there'd be a some discussion particularly surrounding the the performance of the "new" faces in our test squad

Fuck! I forgot too!

I'm loving sport at the moment - International Rules, Soccer, Cricket, Drinking......

If anyone likes to read the action (like I do), Baggy Green is pretty descriptive and upto-date.

Anyway, what a pitiful effort from the Windies.

All out for 149.......

Don't discount the Windies. Mark my words. Mark them!

yeah, so..... why weren't we discounting them again?? Now australia can plug away, make a huge 600 run total and probably not have to bat again and still win.....
