before anyone jumps on my and calls me a chauvinistic pig, just give me a chance. i read today that the new australian bowling coach is a female. sorry what? that is just not cricket. how could a female possibly have MORE to offer in terms of bowling advice than say Lillee, Lawson etc. can you imagine her saying 'McGrath, keep that front elbow up!' he will just laugh, and so he should, because this is a laughable situation

ok sorry to harp on the martyn thing but did anyone hear what bob merriman said today about john buchanan having his contract extended. he said that 'no player or coach should be judged on the basis of one result' (ie the ashes lost) in defending his decision to retain buchanan. he said all players and coaches should be judged on not only the most recent result but what has come before it. so what about martyns one poor result and the fact he was test player of the year last year, just before this 'poor result'? sounds like a horrible case of double standards to me

I really dont think that the new Aus bowling coach should be an issue. Essentially the person is a human movement specialist who will be advising bowlers on the most efficient use of the arm in bowling movement and the woman in question has done a great amount of research into the movement of the body with respect to the act of bowling a cricket ball. So, yes you are being chauvinistic.

But back to the game, I am really not impressed by the so-called 'world XI'. Sure the players on this side are the best from the sides in which they play for (e.g. England, S. Africa, India and Pakistan etc) but they are NOT the best team in the world.

The players never play with each other in matches other than these, many of the players have never played in a side with each other and this is not a cohesive cricket playing unit. It is nothing but a complete cop out.

Actually, I will take it a little further. The broadcast of this game seems to be attempting to make up for the ashes loss where we where clearly out played. Australian cricket is heading for a slump just like our Rugby squad; its time to re-evaluate

i disagree. bowling is not just about where your arm goes etc etc. its about being smart about how you bowl and who you bowl to. i just dont think someone who has not played international cricket (well she has played 12 tests for aus womens team) can actually teach glen mcgrath something!

I don't think this lady has been installed as THE bowling coach as such. I would imagine her role will be to analyze movement and the biomechanics of the bowlers and have input in a scientific role. There is still talk of having a specialist bowling coach which would be an ex-player. My first pick would be Dennis Lillee but that is highly unlikely since his role at the centre of excellence was greatly reduced and he now holds no role in player development. I think someone like Flemming may be a good choice, he has experience in coaching through his work at the centre of excellence and has worked on a number of developmental programs. He obviously has also played at the top level.
Also coaching is not always about being able to teach someone something as such. There isn't really anything that Glenn McGrath is going to "learn" at this point in his career. For him it is about keeping fit and having something there to identify deficiencies that may be developing in his action. A guy like McGrath does have the need for someone to watch video of him bowling and recognise problems developing and thats where this biomechanics chick would come in and I'm sure she is more than capable of explaining to him what is going on from a biomechanical point of view. Then a guy like Glenn would be able to correct it.
A specific bowling coach however is needed at times to work with bowlers when heading on an overseas tour. For instance a specific bowling coach who could work with the bowlers on reverse swing would have been handy in the lead up to the ashes. As would a specific batting coach to work with batsmen on playing in conditions where reverse swing is prominent.
They seem to have arrested the fielding woes by getting Mike Young back to work with the team. Mike is an American guy heavily involved in baseball in the USA over the years and has done a lot of work with aussie cricket team over the years. He is a perfect example of why Buchanan is actually a good coach. He thinks outside the square. He is a good manager of players and does his homework. There isn't much at all in terms of skills that he is going to teach players but by the time they get to the Aus Team they probably don't need to learn too much. Its more about refinement.

i cant understand why the aussies couldnt get so called reverse swing going. it just involves bowling with an upright seam and letting physics do the rest, much easier than normal swing (which involves angling the seam, a bit more tricky) the only reason i can think that we couldnt get it going is perhaps we didnt scuff up one side enough.

the best batting line up in the world didn't even make our first innings total....

Fuck we rock when we're on!!!

reverse swing isn't that straight forward and neither is swing. If it was every fast bowler in the world would be bowling express pace and swinging it a mile. It also has to do with action, weather conditions, conditions of the ball. Nobody knows exactly why the balls starts to reverse swing but they know it just does. there have been a few studies into it but they have come up with nothing.

Cricket just finished, Aussies flogged the World and McGill got 9 for the match! Well done you angry little unpopular man.

Unfortunately we were shit when it mattered. These are hollow victories against a bunch of tourists here for a holiday more than anything else.

Can you tell I'm still bitter about losing the ashes?

I was in Sydney for the cricket on the weekend. Ripper of a session on Saturday.. excellent quality of play except the crowd! Bunch of dicks antagonising Flintoff and the rest of the players.. theres nothing wrong with a bit of hassling from the crowd if its in good fun but these guys were ditching bottles etc at Freddy and his mates, not good form!

The security and NSW Police seemed like they were doing SFA to prevent these losers from hurting the players until later on when they got way out of control.

^ except the ones that were pepper sprayed. 100 ejected from the grounds over the weekend.

unfortunately, I think Brian Lara has done his dash and is too old for the fast sport these days. Its about time he retired.

I think the only reason the World side were no good was because they've never really played or trained enough with each other to realise their full potential as a squad. they were kind of chucked together quickly and told to go and do what they do with team members they've played with for years.

They were probably acting like total cockwads, from what I saw on Saturday anybody who got ejected probably deserved it.

they had a photo and write up in the paper today, people sprayed and ejected from both the racing at randwick and the rugby league and cricket.

funnily enough, the photos were of what appeared to be Kiwi looking people in each instance.

you are right it is not particularly straight forward but i believe it is more straight forward than regular swing. i does have a lot to do with weather and speed of delivery but these only influence the amount of swing, the science behind it is consistent. have you ever taped on side of a tennis ball with electrical tape and seen how much it swings towards the shiny side? this demonstrates that reverse swing is possible with just one shiny side and one rough side and no prominent seam whereas regular swing requires an angled seam and the laminar flow it produces
